Umbilical vein varix, anyone?

I found out at our 32 week ultrasound today that we have an umbilical vein varix, and are on close monitoring for clots in the vein. I now have 2x/week NST appointments and follow up ultrasounds until they decide to do my emergency c section. Thankfully baby is already measuring 5 lbs. I’m very scared for my baby though. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hey! I made an account just to reply to you, haha. I also oddly enough got this diagnosis two days ago also, but I'm 36.5 weeks. I'm already scheduled for a C-Section at 38 weeks d/t having an open myomectomy last year. I'm in "isolated case" as I have tested negative for everything else genetic and there was no turbulent flow or other symptoms. I could say more about it and the research I've done, but it's a bit much. Let me know if you want to talk and I'm happy to keep you posted on my outcome.

  • You are so kind! Thank you for replying. I am happy to hear you’re almost at the finish line and no other anomalies. I don’t have any other anomalies (good genetic testing results, no turbulence… yet). I start my NST testing tomorrow. They scheduled my next ultrasound in 4 weeks which seems too far away. Things can change rather quickly. I’ll ask my doc if they can do other ultrasounds between now and then. Thank you for keeping me posted on your experience! I’ll be thinking of you and your baby.
  • Four weeks away seems kind of crazy from everything I've seen. I guess that's reassuring if your docs aren't worried, but dang. I will try and remember to update you here. Good luck, thinking of you!
  • I complained, and they scheduled weekly ultrasounds! Phew!
  • Good! Mine comes out next Thursday and I'll try and remember to reply and let you know how everything went! xx
  • Thinking of you!!!
  • Hi! Had babe, super healthy with no problems. Hoping same for you and I'm sure it will be great  <3
  • Late to the discussion but I had this with my first pregnancy! My OB told me this is a “2023 mom problem” meaning they’ve only just recently been able to see it on ultrasounds so lots of people have probably had it but no one knew it at the time. I found that to be comforting!! My baby was born with no complications, and almost 9lbs. Just enjoy the extra reassurance from additional NSTs and ultrasounds and your baby will be here before you know! 😊
