I love you!! Every morning I pick him up from his crib say I love you and asked if he slept well. This morning I said I love you and he responded with I love you! Made me tear up even knowing he doesn't know what it means yet still made my heart melt.

To me saying mama, dada and I love you are all in the same category. I get that it seems funny that an 8 mo old can speak a "phrase"... but I'm sure most babies view it as one word, iloveyou. Like when I'm drunk. Totally one word.
Now when Toni's kid says, "who you callin meatball," we can scoff :]
Delusional, I repeat.
"I will show you the kind of big sister I will be..."
Ha! Funny!! According to the numerous classes I took in college on early education and google all babies are different. In addition, by the age of 12 months your child should brushing 15 words on a semiregular basis with knowledge of what the words mean. While DS may not know what I love you means, he does us the words mom, daddy, hi, huh?, and good in proper context forgot to add good in the above comment which you clearly skimmed over. Not only have myself and DH heard DS use the words, but family, friends, and STRANGERS have heard him say it too. Early speaking runs in my family, also mentioned in the above comment, as a matter of fact my niece who is 3 weeks younger than DS says doggy in proper context. I would do a bit more research before calling someone delusional, but that's just me.
I have studied early childhood education, and worked in a daycare. I repeat: child prodigy.
LOL
LOL, Mands
DS was saying "all done" by 9 months old in context, b/c I would say it a million times a day. After a diaper change, when he woke up from his nap, when he was done eating, etc. It was his third "word", after mama & dada. He said it for the first time totally unprompted when he was done eating. Everyone around the table heard it & was like, "umm, did he just say all done? And then sure enough, he said it again even clearer. Then he started saying it on a regular basis after that.
So I agree that if DS is saying "I love you" now it's because you've said it a million times to him, lol. So, yes, he's *just* mimicking, but in all fairness, that *is* how babies learn to talk!
DD isn't saying anything yet, really. She doesn't even really babble. She just does more sing-songy noises, screeches & squeals at this point. So, yes, all babies are different
same here. But, that's my fault for hanging around the SN board too often. I am overall pretty good at scaring myself.
