Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Need advice please. 16m old not pointing?

I’m a SAHM and My daughter is 16 months old. She has never gone to daycare, has been around toddlers twice and that was recently, and we really haven’t gone a lot of places. So she’s not around peers who can kind of teach her things and I wasn’t big on pointing until recently “like I didn’t point to everything to model it.” .. because I didn’t know how huge it was. Long story short, I wanted to know if anyone has had a toddler who pointed late and turned out fine?? My pediatrician said that sometimes toddlers just skip pointing altogether, but on the other hand, I’m worried that she’s not pointing. She does point to things in books and will use her index finger but doesn’t point to things for me to look at.. out in the distance or to show me anything. I heard that they have up to 18 months to start pointing but I wanted to know if anyone else’s toddler wasn’t pointing at one point, and then all of a sudden just started pointing??

  • Many parents have experienced similar worries, and it's reassuring that your pediatrician mentioned that some toddlers skip pointing altogether. The fact that your daughter points to things in books and uses her index finger is a positive sign that she understands the concept of pointing, even if she's not yet using it to communicate or share interests with you. Keep engaging with her, pointing out things of interest, and creating opportunities for social interactions. Children often surprise us with sudden leaps in their development. If you continue to have concerns, you can always discuss them further with your pediatrician or consider seeking a developmental evaluation for additional reassurance.
