Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2.5 month old only sleeping 1 hour

Ugh sorry if this post is rambling. I’m not getting any sleep the past couple of nights. My DS used to sleep a few 3-4 hour stretches per night waking to feed. 2 nights ago he started waking every hour or so fussing and wanting to comfort nurse to go back to sleep. He’s also been eating more during the day which makes me think it could be a growth spurt.

Last night he was so overtired I just let him sleep with me. (I only do this when he isn’t feeling well. We had RSV two weeks ago). But tonight I tried to get him to sleep in his bassinet again. He only gets about an hour then starts fussing. I feel like if I just let him fuss he might fall back asleep but my husband needs to sleep and if I let him fuss everyone just gets woken up. I’ve also started swaddling with one arm out as he has now found that hands can go in the mouth. I’m hoping soon he will learn that he can self sooth by sucking his hand.

What can I do? Is it too soon to sleep train? Will this pass soon and he will go back to sleeping longer stretches? I need some sleep…

Re: 2.5 month old only sleeping 1 hour

  • It is too soon to sleep train according to most experts; 4-6 months is when they have the ability to self soothe and their sleep patterns mature. My baby would only sleep while held until we were able to sleep train at 4 months (the first few weeks we could put him in the crib or bassinet and he'd sleep for up to an hour, but that disappeared quick). My husband and I took shifts overnight so one could sleep while the other was awake and watching/holding the baby. During the day, we recruited family and friends to hold the baby so I could get some sleep. It's really, really rough, but it isn't forever. 4 months is when you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, you do what you can to get through it. They're biologically wired to need us to sleep for the first 3 months (part of why it's called the fourth trimester). You're not doing anything wrong, it's hard but it's natural and how we're made.

  • Mine is only 5 and a half weeks but she wouldn’t sleep for 2 days. And most all her waking moments were screaming. I chalked it up to a growth alert bc she went back to my sweet happy baby again. I googled growth spurts to see when they typically happen and there is one around 6 weeks. Also, one around 3 months so it’s very possible he just hit his a little early. I sure hope that’s all it is and you get some sleep soon!
