1st Trimester

If a single embryo splits into twins, can they develop at different rates?

Hello,

We did IVF last year and did a single embryo transfer for a PGT tested 4AA graded embryo. We had an ultrasound done at 5 weeks, 1 day and confirmed a single gestational sac at that time, but it was too early to see a yolk sac or baby. A second ultrasound was done at 6 weeks, 1 day which confirmed one yolk sac and baby with a heartbeat, but there was an additional sac shown as well that was drastically smaller than the confirmed gestational sac (2 sacs within one placenta, not independent of one another). The ultrasound did not indicate that there was any mass within that sac and was noted as empty. I'm familiar with vanishing twins, however, I'm also wondering if an embryo splits into 2 babies, can one develop slower than the other? Thus, causing a few day delay in growth/development in a smaller gestational sac? Would the split technically mean that one baby, gestationally speaking was several days younger than the other? We'll find out more info a little shy of 2 weeks from now as the doctor said we would be able to confirm at that time if it is indeed 2 babies, a vanishing twin or some anomoly, but I was curious to get some input from others who've possibly experienced this or something similar.
