Cherry tart juice

I was looking for other ways to help sleep other than taking Benadryl every night. I saw a video about drinking cherry tart juice for sleep but I can’t find anything about it ; whether it’s safe during pregnancy. Help! Is it safe?!

Re: Cherry tart juice

  • Ask your Doctor. Have you tried massage therapy or progressive muscle relaxation plus limiting your screen time? I'm a big believer in stop worrying about it. Worrying and obsessing on it will just make it worse.

It's just juice. You may not find anything about safety if you're specifically looking for tart cherry juice (or apple juice or grape juice or orange juice), but you can just follow the guidelines for juice in general, with means just make sure it's pasteurized.
  • If you want to try, try.  Do you need to ask about orange juice? Apple juice? If no (reasons why you would: diabetes) why would cherry juice be different?
  • Because cherry tart has melatonin in it
  • Thanks for the support

I personally stay away from melatonin for myself and my kids. You are messing with your natural hormone production. Also, it would have been helpful to put that in the original post so that people understood why you were asking about juice.

Lots of things have naturally occurring melatonin in them, just like tart cherries, such as eggs, nuts, and fish. Even bananas and oats have significant amounts of melatonin. Do you really avoid all those things for you and your kids? I think you both are actually similarly putting way to much stock in the idea of melatonin in food. It's naturally occurring in food in levels that yes, may help with sleep, but also aren't concentrated like melatonin pills that can be harmful. If it's not a for your doctor has said to avoid, you should be fine.

    Stuck in the box……

I’m referring to melatonin supplements. I have never paid attention to foods that have naturally occurring melatonin. Once she mentioned melatonin I assumed it was something artificially added.

Exactly and plus also, tart cherry juice is a concentrated form. We have no idea if it's safe for pregnancy. It seems that I am unable to reply to you outside of a quote box. Weird.

  • Clinical pharmacist and expecting mama here 👋🏼. Tart cherry juice won’t hurt the baby, but may not give you the sleep you need…especially with its sugar content. The best and safest option is doxylamine (Unisom). Start with half a tablet at night and work up to one tablet. It works similarly to Benadryl, but is safest in pregnancy. It’s recommended by doctors everywhere for nausea, so two birds with one stone!! Hope that helps.
