Ok. I could NOT sleep last night and for some reason all I could think about was girl names. I have a couple questions I’d like to pick your brains about.
1) How would you (is there a way to) “properly” spell Sailor?
2) I love Jill and Jo. What are any names for those I’m missing? I’ve got Jillian for Jill. And Jolene, Joanne & Jolynn for Jo.
We thought of the name Sullivan for a boy with Sully as the nickname and my best friend was like absolutely not 🤣🤣 boy names are so dang hard. I just hope its a girl. I think we have that name narrowed down. We're gonna do Lianne, as a tribute to big brother too, since he name ended in Lian. It was supposed to be Anne but I wanted something more. So Adeline Lianne Kasey/Kacie/Kasie (I need help with spelling for Casey that are girlier. I don't like the traditional spelling for once on a name) or Kennedie Lianne Kasie/Kacie/Kacey.
@jennaverhaeghe I’d say Sailor is the “proper” way to spell it, like the profession, but I think most people would assume it was spelled Saylor as a name. Jillian is my favorite full name for Jill; it could also work as a nn for Juliana (and its variants). Josephine and Johanna are my favorites for Jo!
@jennaverhaeghe I think Sailor is how I would write it. I can't think of more for Jill, but Jo has a lot. Joelle, Jolie, Josie, Joanna, Josephine. My niece is Josephine and declared her nickname to be Jo jo spider. But we were calling her Josie and had to change to Jo. So even if you try to plan it, they might change it on you haha
@andrawrmeda2 Sully is cute! I like the name Sullivan a lot actually. I've stopped sharing names with my best friend because every single name she ruins for me. Like why do people do that? You are going to them to tell them you found a name for your baby and then they tell you they hate it.
@mokamonster I’m dying to hear if you liked any of the names that your husband wrote down on the list that you found! Were they boy/girl names or gender neutral? Would any of them also work in English?
I’m not sure about Eli working for a girl. I do love it for a boy, though!! I saw that Ellie has been ruined for you, what about Allie, Evie, Edie, Emmy, Effy, Essie, or Etta? Just throwing things out there!
@jennaverhaeghe As much as I usually insist that names be spelled correctly, and Sailor is definitely the correct spelling of the word… Sailor has never once been in the top 1000 names on the US popularity charts, whereas Saylor has been shooting up the charts since 2013 (currently sitting at #258). I predict this will be a top 100 name soon, so if you choose to use this trendy name, I would definitely spell it Saylor, otherwise it stands to be “misspelled” often.
As for Jill, I believe it was originally a short form for Gillian, but when the nickname Jill became popular, many people started spelling the full name Jillian. I also love Janelle, Jaqueline, Jayla, Julia, Juliana, and Juliet! And for Jo, I love Josephine, Jocelyn, Joelle, Johanna, Jolie, Jordan, Josette, Journey, and Jovana/Giovanna!
@andrawrmeda2 Could I throw out some more ideas for girl names containing Lian?
Lillian, Juliana, Liana, Gillian/Jillian, Eliana, Aureliana, Bonus: one of my very favorite names of all time is Linnea (lin-NAY-uh), which is also known as “the twin flower.” This could be thought of as a nice tribute to her brother, like she is sort of a reflection of him. It doesn’t have the exact same order of letters as lian, but does have the same feel. Just a thought, that I wanted to throw out there!
I feel like Adeline and Lianne are pretty close to each other, so they sound repetitive as a first and middle combo. Have you considered Adelaide? That’s my first daughter’s name! Adelaide Lianne sounds a lot less similar to each other. Or if you’re set on Adeline, Adeline Juliana or Adeline Gillian would be my favorite two options.
As for Casey, I think my next favorite spelling would be Kacey? This would also be good, since Kacey Musgraves spells her name this way, so people would be more familiar with it. (Disclaimer I’m not a Kacey Musgraves fan, so I’m not suggesting it because of that) If you don’t love that one, a spelling I did not see on your list was Kaci. I have a dear friend whose name is spelled that way, and it’s so easy to remember, short and sweet!
I still love Adeline Kennedy, but you could add Lianne as a second middle name. So Adeline Kennedy Lianne. That way it wouldn’t be too repetitive with Adeline and Lianne right next to each other. Or Adeline Kacey Lianne flows even better!
For a boy, I know you said you liked the idea of the first name ending in -an as a tribute to Killian. What if you did the same thing you’re doing for a girl, and choose a MIDDLE name ending in Lian? You could do Julian, Elian, Aurelian, Emilian, or Maximilian. Maybe you don’t love any of these enough for a first name, but you like one of them enough for a middle name? Then you wouldn’t need the first name to end in -an anymore, so you’d have more options available, to find a name you truly love!
I know you said you love Kieran before (I love it too), but your husband doesn’t like it. Would he entertain it as the middle name?
@starlight8323 that was a lot to take in 😂 I appreciate the feedback though. I had a family friend growing up named Linnea actually and she isn't the best person now 😂 so that's out. Adelaide was my first choice but it got feedback from several people that it sounds like marmalade and it doesn't fit our last name at all. Adeline is also an anagram of my daughter's name, Delanie. So I thought that was really neat too. Addie and Lanie sound really cute together too. I'd probably flip it because my daughter's initials are DKLD and I like the matching of it. So AKLD would hers 😂 The spelling of Casey isn't a huge deal, I just don't like the traditional for once. I'm usually very big on the spelling of names being "normal", after growing up with Andromeda being said every which way but right 😂 I really like Kacie though. It's cute and girly.
We're still brainstorming boys names. I really like Brigan, which is a character from one of my favorite books and my son has a friend named Briggs and my husband loves that name. Briggs to me isn't a real name. It sounds like a nickname. So I told him we can compromise on the name and he can have both, a nickname and real name 😂 boy names are so difficult though. I also like Everest, I guess symbolism for me is climbing the mountain and still moving on. He really didn't like that though.
I wanted to stick with a K, an A or E name since we have two D's, a K, an A and an E. I think it would be cute to continue in twos. He also doesn't like that 😂 I like patterns and the fact that the boys names end in -an is neat, the girls names sound similar and are spelled similar are neat to me. My patterns don't always work though 😂 my son's bday is 07/08/15 which adds up, my daughter was due 1/16/17 but she didn't come that day 😑😂 we were supposed to be married 10/10/20 but we had to wait a year so it's 10/9/21 which is our actual anniversary anyway. So I guess I have to get used to my patterns not working 😂
@starlight8323 I like all of the names for Chinese names for sure. They are written just based on sound and then you pick different characters for either a boy or girl. So pronunciation is the same. These are the names if you're curious: Morui (mo-ray), Moxi (mo-she), Wanyue (wahn-you-eh), Xinrui (sheen-ray), Yiheng (ee-hung), Xiaohan (Shou-han = ou as in loud). I tried to use English words to write out the sounds, not sure if it makes sense haha but definitely can't see any working in English with the same pronunciation
I had a dream last night that I gave birth and the baby popped out and I was like "Skylan" and it was the perfect name. I couldn't remember the name until noon and it was bothering me all morning. When I remembered, I thought it wasn't a real name, but I guess it's a very unpopular name? I feel like dream me got confused with Skylar haha
Alright well I'm back to the drawing board. We had a girl name down pat and now we need a boy name 😂 we have Declan, Delanie and Killian. Our last name is Dickey(I know the privacy thing is a huge thing for the bump, but it's necessary to understand our name dilemma 😂), which is hard as hell to pair with 😂 I like more out there names, not crazy like mine, but not one that's gonna be #7 in the class. I really like patterns and our boys both end in -an. Personally I like the names Donovan and Brigan, but DH isn't sold. I'd like another K name to fit the pattern of two Ds and two Ks but we have an E and A too we can add to. I'm not opposed to any letter though at this point. Boy names are so dang hard.
I like Luca but there was a serial killer in Canada named Luca and my H won’t get over it.
Carter is nice but feels very white to me and I’m not white. 😅
I don’t personally know anyone with any of these names or have any baby’s in my mom group with the names but also because we’re such an expat oriented group.

Parker is a cute name close to Carter, or Harper. Luca is cute, maybe Lucas or Lucan? I love Logan but we have bad history with that name.
@wanderlustsoul hahaha is Carter white-feeling? There was a Carter at my school growing up who was black 😅 but I could see it being used predominantly in the white community.
I would have to agree with hubby on Luca then. It would always remind me of that serial killer 😕
What about looking into more neutral names or names with fem and masc forms (like Ross-Rosa)? If you have some girl names picked put, you could search online for their masc counter-parts for boy names.
Another thing we did was pick famous people in history that have made great contributions to the world and then find similar names to them or the opposite fem/masc forms. I would say that my husband generally didn't like any of these names though haha
We’ve been having a really hard time picking out a name for baby boy. I’ve FINALLY convinced my husband to help narrow it down to four first and middle name options. I’d love some help choosing. I have no idea how to name a boy lol. I’d love a name we can have a nickname with.
Big sister is Amelia Marie and we call her Mia.
Colton Jacob (nn Cole) Cayden Alexander (nn Cade) Logan Carter (nn ??) Rowan Cole (nn ??)
So we're 99% sold on Kallahan Ian Graham D. Ian would be the last part of Killy's name and a homage to him and Graham is for a really good friend of ours 💙💚
We maybe decided on an English name for baby. After seeing the baby's picture yesterday, the name "Marlow" just popped in my head. I was on my mega list of names but we didn't consider it much. Now we even started calling the baby Marlow already. We are unsure about middle names, though. My husband likes Marlow Mo (because fun to say and fetal nickname is Mo) but we also thought of Marlow Sky. Open to any suggestions for middle names!
Husband and I decided on the first name easily but struggled with middle name. Finally made a decision!
Her name is going to be Ramona Noel. 🥰
I have always loved the name Ramona (it means wise protector), it’s unique but traditional and it has Spanish origins (my husband is Mexican and Puerto Rican so I like that it honors his heritage). Thankfully my husband LOVES Scott Pilgrim so when I brought it up he was like immediately “yes!” (One of the main characters is named Ramona) Haha. The middle name was hard, originally we wanted to honor our mothers but their names just didn’t go together sadly. Felt like a twilight “renesme” situation lolol. But I have always loved Christmas, and our baby was conceived on our New York Christmas trip, so I thought of Noel and it felt right! And there you have it! 💙 I’m really happy about it.
@wanderlustsoul They are all nice names. My two favorites would be Dominic and Logan. Although I like James a lot too. Do you want to pick a name before the birth or are you planning to wait until you see baby for the final pick?
Names are hard, it’s such a big, permanent decision. But I would suggest going in with a list of names you both like and don’t stress about having a definite name. My husband and I had to go to our list with DD#2 because the two names we had picked out we felt just didn’t suit her.
@froggerblue we’d like to at least narrow it down a bit more and have some middle names chosen. I’m ok with going with a few names and deciding. But we also have a max of 3 days to pick the name. 😅
with my first, we knew his name immediately and had it chosen the moment we knew it was a boy. With my second, we chose his first name around this point and then decided on middle names once he was born.
I just don’t feel 100% sold on any which I guess is why it’s making it tough. I love the names of my others so much.
Bringing this back because we still don’t have names picked out. 🙃🙃🙃
Our leads so far seem to be Dominic, Carter, Cole, Logan, and James.
But I’m finding it so hard to choose.
We haven’t chosen a girl name either but I’m sure we can figure that out if needed.
I like Dominic and Cole myself! James is a good middle name too if needed! Either of those would sound good together. Dominic Cole isn't too bad either lol
@wanderlustsoul picking a name oit is so stressful. Actually before we picked a name, I had a list of names but none felt right. Then suddenly we picked a name not even on the list 😅
I ended up telling people the name when I went back to the US because I was annoyed with the comments people were making (like racist comments making fun of Chinese names). But now it doesn't feel right anymore. I don't know if it's just because I told people and it isn't as special or what. No one had a negative reaction to it, if anything they all loved it a lot. So not sure
We had a lot of name drama with my daughter so since then we tend to keep the name on the downlow. I know a lot of people are worried we're going to give this baby his brothers name, which is not something I could do. I know toddler loss mommas that did do that but this baby is all his own person and deserves his name. So many people have asked what his name is and I just feel so uncomfortable telling anyone. I'm pretty set on the name, it took a while to warm up to, but I don't want to tell anyone the full name cause his middle name is part of his brothers name. And I won't have anyone telling me not to do that to him 😒. He's just getting a piece of it, which I feel comfortable with. Names are such a testy thing.
Re: Baby Names Thread
And for Jo, I love Josephine, Jocelyn, Joelle, Johanna, Jolie, Jordan, Josette, Journey, and Jovana/Giovanna!

Luca, Carter, Logan, Noah, Jacob.
I don’t really want a popular name but the names are so hard. Ugh naming sucks.
