Re: What my Pregnant Self is Eating - November

  • I have been eating terribly lately.  I am so nauseas and eating is the only thing that helps so I have been reaching for hearty (not so good for me) foods.  I need to really reevaluate my eating.  I bought a box of smores poptarts for the first time since I was a teen and ate half the box in three days.  So sweet, I am craving sweet haha.

  • With DS1&2, I had intense soup cravings. Mainly potato soup from panera (but they don't have it anymore 🥺) or chicken and gnocchi from olive garden. I haven't had a whole ton of cravings this time yet because everything just sounds terrible most of the time. But if I *do* have a craving it's always something fried, greasy, awful for me haha. Like i just had to have mozzarella sticks one night and fried pickles another last week. And my husband is so terrified of how little I've been eating he's like yes, whatever you want you can have it! Just eat something! So I'm being enabled too. Definitely need to tighten up my diet once I have a regular appetite again!
    ksdelong20
  • @thescarletmom I really really want to eat fried food but my body is like nope, and I throw it up again, which makes me sad but also thanks for keeping me semi accountable body, way to call me out 😆
    thescarletmom
  • @kalesix3 make no mistake about it, I threw up those mozzarella sticks 😂 my husband did lightly call me out on the taking prilosec and chasing it with fried foods haha. I've moved on to a weird need for charcuterie the last few days. Which I know is technically illegal but my midwife and I agreed last pregnancy that the US has some weird restrictions on pregnant women's diets that no one else does, so as long as I'm not eating foods of questionable origins or like swordfish I can just use my best judgement. I'm sure those hilshire farms fancy lunchables I ate while watching unsolved mysteries were plenty pasteurized anyways haha
    kalesix3annemarie96ksdelong20
  • Smoothies and Easy Mac for the win. My mom said, you’re just going to have to eat like a toddler and I’m taking that advice all too literally.

  • I really dont have any cravings yet. Chick fil a Mac n cheese has been really yummy to me lately, but I wouldn't say I crave it. I'm only 8 weeks along, so we'll see how the cravings change in the next few weeks! With my first born, it was sour candy, Mac n cheese, and dorritos with sour cream.

  • Re: soup I've noticed that in pregnancy I crave a bunch of childhood foods/Amish food (since I was Amish growing up) and I think it's a comfort thing, so if soup is your comfort food you might crave more of it but mine are things like peanut butter spread on homemade bread, funeral potatoes, pot roast with carrots and potatoes, and tuna fish sandwiches because I ate a lot of those things as a kid and I associate them with comfort. Tonight I got the most intense craving for green beans, lightly steamed and sauteed in butter and garlic and I ate three helpings zero shame 😆 so much for my earlier comment that I was craving nothing!
    thescarletmomksdelong20
  • @kalesix3 oh my god pot roast has sounded so good for weeks but I know the smell of it in the crockpot would be strong enough to kill me instantly. I definitely think its me settling in to my comfort foods.

My husband heard one time, many years ago, that pregnant women are at an increased risk for developing pica (urge to eat things that aren't food) and he just won't let it go that it's a pregnant person thing and not a "anybody can get this" thing that pregnant people are slightly more likely to get. It drives me insane. He hasn't said anything yet this pregnancy but we got in to straight up arguments about it last time when he mentioned he was worried I'd start eating non-foods next when I mentioned craving a food he doesn't like. I don't know why but thinking about cravings reminded me of this so now I'm pre-mad about it, so DH better watch out haha.

@thescarletmom I mean Pica is a severe and dangerous deficiency, particularly of iron, it's not just going to happen randomly to you one day! If he brings it up make sure to tell him that my mom had it chronically, pregnant and non pregnant and it got worse with age and her ignoring it, not pregnancy!
I actually thought it was so normal I waited for it to strike me when I got pregnant the first time and it never did, I was so confused because I also assumed it just happened randomly to pregnant people 😆 I've never heard of anyone with good nutrition and adequate vitamin levels who got pica.
  • @kalesix3 oh my god, that's crazy! I cant imagine how weird it would feel to just be waiting for something like that to happen! I first heard of it on an episode of some mystery diagnosis type medical show when i was a teenager. This woman was having terrible gastrointestinal symptoms that no treatment helped. Turned out it was because she ate 1-2 rolls of toilet paper a day! And her colon was filed with it! It was just so intense. So this story is what I think of when my husband says anything about pica and I just get irrationally ragey because I would never eat toilet paper haha.

Also guess who added pot roast ingredients to the grocery list for my husband to pick up at the store today 😂 I'll throw it in the crockpot first thing in the morning before I leave for work and then it will be done cooking before I get home! I can handle the smell of cooked meat usually, it's just the actively cooking that gets me. I'm so excited!!
    kalesix3annemarie96
  • @thescarletmom yay for pot roast!!!!! It seriously hits so different in pregnancy, I hope it doesn't make you sick!
Re pica: well I also read The Grapes of Wrath as a teenager and there's that one part where Roseofsharon (or whatever her name is) just started eating coal? And the mom said she used to eat pieces of slack lime? Yeah I convinced myself it was super normal. Lol it wasn't toilet paper for my mom, it was charcoal, laundry detergent, and pickling lime, stuff like that. She got great prenatal care but just could never be bothered to follow advice and take supplements or vitamins. Thankfully I googled it and found pica and went down a rabbithole and educated myself! And you'd be aware of compulsive behavior when you started doing it! I'm the same way though, whenever anyone starts stressing me out about doing some cliche pregnant thing I get ragey lol.

  • The nausea has been hitting HARD this week. I’m mostly eating foods that probably aren’t the best for me but it’s all I can stomach. Last night my fiancé tried to force me to eat cheesy broccoli and chicken. I was gagging like crazy. No vomiting though. My nausea has not led to any actual vomiting yet. Anyone else have that?
    knottieb59f17eb976a3412
  • @blavin I dry heave a lot with no actual vomiting. It's hit or miss for me! Yesterday during grocery shopping, I kept an extra plastic bag with me in case I happened to throw up in the grocery store because my nausea was sooo bad! I managed to make it through!
  • @blavin noooo you can't force a pregnant person to eat 💀 (or anybody of course, but pregnant it's especially bad) I love chicken, and that's like 95% of the meat I ever eat, but I just can't stomach the texture while pregnant and nauseated. Ugh.
    annemarie96
  • @hitcj4687 the grocery store is the worst right now! Just the sight of the meat section has me feeling like gagging, and all the overpowering smells. Told my fiancé after last weekend he’s probably going to have to do the shopping without me for now.

My cravings have also been mostly childhood comfort foods and lots of bread and cheese. The only thing that sounds appetizing some evenings are bean and cheese tacos (my favorite comfort food!). Luckily I live in San Antonio, so they are plentiful and cheap here.
    thescarletmom
  • @puffling2023 idk what it is about raw meat but its unbearable right now!!!

  • Literally same to almost all of these. I wanna eat healthy but the thought of it makes me throw up. Soo I’ve been getting zaxbys and having smoothies. Maybe once the second trimester hits I can’t get back to my healthy eating..just trying to survive currently ..
    knottieb59f17eb976a3412
  • Fruit, bread, and pasta. So basically straight carbs lol. I try to fit in some protein, I usually end up anemic by second trimester, so I’m trying to avoid that this time around… but it’s been rough😅 Im 7weeks and literally told my husband this morning there is no way I’m doing this again. Haha
    thescarletmom
  • I found out that if I make any meat dish diabolically spicy I can choke it down without gagging and puking on the taste and texture. The only way it works is because somehow I don't get reflux or heartburn ever. So yeah I was able to enjoy the world's spiciest taco salad tonight thanks to hot sauce 🙃
    thescarletmompuffling2023ksdelong20
  • @kalesix3 I loooove spicy!! I made gyro bowls tonight with ground lamb and something about the lamb was absolutely phenomenal for me. Maybe that it's rich in Iron? Not sure, but it really did everything I needed it to do for me.
    kalesix3ksdelong20
  • I hardly have any food aversions! Mostly my aversions are to smells that aren’t food. I have, on the other hand, had lots of cravings. Current fixation is a loaded baked potato??? Honestly can’t remember the last time I had one before pregnancy. I have had it 3 times already!! Haha! I could use some food aversions so I stop eating so many carbs!!!
    ksdelong20
  • So far I have had two cravings.. the first one was chocolate which I had with my daughter also… which is always odd to me because I am not a chocolate fan. The other is a burrito covered in queso and salsa. And now I am making myself hungry for a burrito at 8am 😩
    ksdelong20
  • Yessss to spicy! Thai has been life for me lately.  The spicier the better.

  • Y'all I am the biggest spice wimp... I feel anxious just reading about your spicy taco salads haha. My current cravings are quite literally all over the place. Lots of carbs/starches, bread, crackers. But also roasted, sort of crispy broccoli with butter and sea salt 👌🏼 then two days ago we drove past a Red Lobster and I've wanted crab legs desperately ever since haha
    ksdelong20
  • The last few days I’ve been developing a list of foods that I can tolerate. Turkey bacon is the best for some reason, and ginger ale, limeade, salt and vinegar chips, pickles, apparently all the sour spicy salty flavors are the most settling right now. I’m kinda sad about it because it’s exactly what I craved with the other two, and both times they were boys, haha. Maybe it’s a coincidence but it did line up with the midwives tale. At least we have all the clothes for a boy. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was already looking at dresses though 😭

  • @annemarie96 I am very shocked at how settling BBQ chips have been for me the last few days. I thought for sure i was going to get sick because they feel so greasy but i think the starch helps! And I heard from everyone under the sun that being super sick during pregnancy meant I was having a girl, so I don't buy in to any of that stuff personally haha. But I also wouldn't assume boy just because this pregnancy is similar to your others! I think some people (like myself) just have really consistent pregnancy symptoms and cravings, your body's like BTDT. And other people might not! My sister has two girls and she was convinced her second was a boy because that pregnancy was so different from her first.
    annemarie96
  • @annemarie96 if it reassures you I crave the same kinds of things and I've had a boy and a girl so maybe you're the same?! Now I'm craving BBQ chips after reading this thread and I don't eat chips for any reason.. I may have to break down and get some lol.
I've had peanut butter cravings three pregnancies now, the first time I became violently sick if I ate it but I'd crave it, and then the second time I ate it the entire time, couldn't get enough of it and I had some yesterday and I got so sick from it and I find that absolutely wild. Maybe my body is asking for more healthy fats but I feel like I already eat plenty 😵 I realized this morning that I've eaten sourdough french toast every single day this week for breakfast. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm counting it healthier because I don't eat it with syrup, plus it's protein rich, and I can only get three or four bites in without getting sick so not thaaaat many carbs but still lol.

  • Decided I needed Mexican food urgently.  Specifically guac and queso and flautas. The Mexican place I wanted to order from doesn't have good queso, so I just sent my husband to pick up queso from qdoba and Mexican from the other place I want food from. Meanwhile I'm laying in bed watching Netflix, being a lazy piece of trash😂😂
    francesgskalesix3annemarie96ksdelong20
  • @kalesix3 almost every morning I eat a protein English muffin with sunflower butter and honey. It's like my absolute favorite breakfast right now
  • @kalesix3 BBQ chips are 🤌 but I love pb so much, I think just about anything is improved by pb. But when I'm in my first tri, one of my biggest vomit triggers is having to chew something a lot/my mouth feeling full. And the sticky/full feeling of pb, while delicious, I just can't do. Wah wah
    kalesix3annemarie96
  • @hitcj4687 oh Mexican does sound amazing too and enjoy the potato life while you can is my vote haha! You deserve some pampering!
Oddly enough there's a billion Qdobas by my house and I've never eaten at any of them 👀
I forgot about English muffins and now I'm probably going to add some to my grocery list for tomorrow. Sigh. 😆

@thescarletmom I know exactly what you mean about the sticky chewy texture! Maybe I'm saved because I lick it off a spoon ? Idk it's a terrible,  habit 🤪 dang now all I'm thinking of is having some peanut butter and chips which is a horrible plan haha.
    hitcj4687annemarie96thescarletmom
  • @kalesix3 when I was a small child I would fill a little bowl with pb and eat it with a spoon in the middle of the night on the edge of my parents' bed, so I'm not here to criticize any spoonfuls of peanut butter haha. Not to be an enabler, but I think BBQ chips and peanut butter is a GREAT plan and you should do it. Clearly it's what the baby wants
    kalesix3annemarie96
  • @thescarletmom how do I always forget about that amazing justification 😂😂 guess the baby is getting what it wants!
    thescarletmom
  • Baby wants what baby gets, nothing that you eat while you're pregnant is really you 😂😂 qdoba is my jam! I love a good burrito bowl. But the queso is great! I barely made a dent in all the food I sent him out for... it was still worth it though lol
    kalesix3
  • @kalesix3 Eat the dang chips! 😂 I used to be so so crunchy (my husband for sure is still) and I swear I’m managing the morning sickness way better this time because I am willing to eat WHATEVER sounds edible instead of trying to force down what I think I should be eating. And you know what? I’m not puking everything up this time. Amazing. 🤣 Today I ate Cheetos and ramen and beef jerky and just had a peanut butter honey sandwich. My portions are still tiny, but I kept it all down!
So worth it. It’s a season.
    kalesix3thescarletmomReadyForaBksdelong20
  • @annemarie96 I used to be too lol, some old crunchy habits for extremely hard and eating chips and ramen is one of them but they sound amazing right now 😍 I've added some to my grocery order for tomorrow morning 😂
Gosh though I wish beef jerky wasn't $13 for a tiny bag, I want some so bad. Beef jerky and chocolate milk got me through the worst of my morning sickness with my first 😂 such a amazing combo haha. I'm so glad you're keeping things down! Early pregnancy really does it's best to make us all more flexible humans!

@hitcj4687 hopefully everything still sounds amazing tomorrow and you have leftovers!!
It's %100 worth it for the experience alone haha!
Kinda sus how this baby is craving salad, green beans and then straight to potato chips 😆
    annemarie96
  • @kalesix3 lulled you in to a false sense of security, bam now you need every junk food under the sun haha. The first thing I ate and kept down after I started getting really sick was roasted broccoli and I was like hell yeah! Now I just want every greasy, fatty comfort food/snack and the broccoli is the only healthy thing I can stomach still haha

@annemarie96 I definitely felt a significant change in how often I was vomiting when I was willing to just eat ANYTHING if it sounded good in the moment. Turns out not having a chronically empty stomach helped! I was trying to force myself to only eat bland/cracker/toast things or veggies and it all backfired.
    kalesix3annemarie96
  • @thescarletmom lol 😂 balance in all things, at least broccoli is still palatable! I'm so happy to hear nausea is getting better all around, hopefully you're all out of the woods soon, being flexible with diet definitely seems like the winning strategy!
    thescarletmomannemarie96
  • Okay food pictures would gross me out so I won't post one but pot roast tonight turned out SO good and I was able to eat a good bit after being horribly sick all day from the smell. Plus I outdid myself on the mashed potatoes and it was so soothing to eat. I've been getting terribly sick from any kind of potatoes lately but so far so good keeping them down.
