Has anyone used a doppler while not pregnant?

edited October 2022 in 1st Trimester
Has any one used a fetal Doppler while not pregnant? What sounds did you hear? I’ve been getting my period, but last night I swear I felt something moving, now it definitely could’ve been gas but I thought I’d try my fetal Doppler to see if it picked anything up since I don’t have pregnancy tests on hand. All I got was my heart beat, and a whooshing (wind blowing) sound which I know from my other pregnancies was the placenta. Is it possible that I have that whooshing sound WITHOUT being pregnant.

    Is this a stupid question?
  • This is a Trying to get pregnant board. The majority of the women on this board have never been pregnant, or have never been pregnant enough to even hear a heartbeat. This question is probably better suited for the 1st tri board, or another board where others have already been pregnant and have been able to use a Doppler to hear a heart beat. Best wishes.

Sorry @bearmomma1 but I think you’re being too nice on this one…and I’m not one to be snarky but OP I would consider this a “stupid question”. If you think you may be pregnant take a pregnancy test. If you don’t have any then go to the store and buy one. What you felt was almost certainly gas. I have felt phantom baby movements even 2 years postpartum. This is probably one of the many reasons doctors don’t encourage the use of a home Doppler.

    Is this a stupid question?
    Her words, not mine
  • Then why not just say that in the first place, instead of being passive aggressive about it. I was confused as to where to put it and I figured there’d be a mix of people who have been pregnant and trying for another and one’s who haven’t been pregnant before. I was wrong obviously, my bad.
  • I’ll come right out and say this is absolutely stupid. You are probably feeling gas. And a Doppler can pick up your blood flow in your abdomen - that’s the whooshing, a fetal heartbeat is well over 100bpm. I say this as someone with a live child, who used an at home Doppler when pregnant.
  • *dirty lurker*

Of course, your doppler is picking up sounds. There are all sorts of noises going on all the time in your various organs. Maybe it was your intestines. Maybe your stomach.

Even if you were pregnant, trained professional providers such as OBs or midwives don’t hear baby sounds on a doppler until 10-12 weeks. If you are pregnant and at getting-your-next-period time frame, that means you’d be roughly 4 weeks along. Your uterus would still be very much down behind your pelvis, and you can’t hear a thing. (Also, you can’t feel a baby move at 4 weeks. It was definitely gas or something else).
  • Really? A whooshing sound can be your own blood flow or organs doing what they need to do- not just a placenta.

These are one of the questions that I really wonder about society 🙄
  • wow, the replies to this question is absolutely sickening. let me just say, i know this post is kinda old now but, no question is a stupid question. you had an experience you were unsure about and you came here asking just to be shamed by other women. we all have questions others might see as “stupid”sometimes, but it was a legitimate thing you were curious about and it was a valid question. i’m sorry you had such stuck up responses to this! women should look out for another, not put each other down. seriously disgusting! i had my first baby at 18 and trust me, i had TONS of “stupid” questions. currently trying for my second ((i’m 20 now)), it is true you can hear whooshing without being pregnant.

i’m actually so beyond disappointed in what i just read.
  • she obviously didn’t know that , next time you don’t know something, remind yourself of how you treated someone when they experienced that :) . have a VERY lovely day.
