Greetings from Italy!
I'm writing to here because a friend of ours is now going through IVF in the States and I am stunned by how much it is costing. In fact, it seems that 15, 20 or even 25 thousand dollars is not uncommon in the US. I'm sure that's a nightmare if you don't have really good insurance. My wife and I went through our successful IVF treatment in Klagenfurt, Austria. A wonderful private clinic, where the whole procedure (drugs, one pick up and implantation with a 5-day blastocyte) cost us a total of around 6000 euro. We had no insurance to cover the cost and paid out of pocket, but it was a lot more affordable for us than trying to do it in the States. My wife has dual US/Italian citizenship, and I don't know if Americans without an EU passport would be charged more, but maybe it's worth investigating if a trip to Austria (or some other European destination) might be more affordable for many couples struggling to find the money for IVF treatment. I am happy to provide further information (name of clinic, our experience etc) if anyone is interested. We are intending to go back there this summer to try for a second child. The clinic answers emails in English.
