gripe fest, 5/9

Re: gripe fest, 5/9

  • @maple1422
It's been so bizarre weather-wise! We hunkered down in the basement for at least 30 minutes last night during the worst of the storm and tornado warnings. Luckily no damage to home or property, but I noticed there were a LOT of road closures on the way to work due to flooded roadways and a neighbor down the street from us lost a really big tree. Thankful for the sun and much less humid air today!

  • This week we have had: An employee threaten to physically assault another employee, 1 girl mad because we wouldn't extend her short term disability (which she had exhausted and is no way controlled by your manager) so she called my boss an asshole and threatened to slap him, A car wreck in the parking lot, An employee fall and is now in ICU having seizures, fired 2 for attendance issues, and 2 more for shitty attitudes.
If only I could down a bottle of wine tonight....
  • @mnmomma84 we'll total out two vehicles, repair 1, fix our house roof, and possibly our shop roof from all the hail damage. I hope we have a wet year instead of being so dry like last year!
  • welp looks like covid is on the menu for me...
  • @mamamoomoo12 sorry to hear! Hope you get over it quickly and smoothly!
  • @mamamoomoo12
sorry to hear!  mine is not covid, but we can still be miserable together.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • @whitta1015 what a crazy week! I hope things calm down sooner rather than later.

@mamamoomoo12 have meeting your bump group member, how exciting! And I suppose you're right, I may change my mind about socializing with the folks in the centering group once I've met them. :D

@kboydbowman we had better do an in-person meet up eventually! It would be really fun. Sorry to hear about the sinus issue, though. :/

@mnmomma84 water damage is the WORST! I'm so sorry to hear about the drainage issue, what a pain in the ass.

Some complicated chromosomal stuff going on - our fingers are crossed, but this may not go according to plan!

@mamamoomoo12 ugh sorry you caught the rona! It’s going around. Every time I go to the office I have to send someone home because they get a text because someone they know closely just tested positive. I’m two for two in recent weeks haha. I look like an alien being the ONLY one in my office wearing a mask and eating lunch by myself but a girls got to do what a girls got to do!

ALSO 🥰 yay! I also love this community!!
  • @mamamoomoo12 noooo, sorry you got the ‘Rona 😞 hope it’s mild and goes away fast!
  • So far the worst is trying to keep my temp down. It keeps trying to creep towards 101 at which point I’ll have to go in if I can’t get it down.
  • @whitta1015 whoa! Sounds like you've had quite the week! Hope all goes well with the one who fell. Seizures are scary as there's no way to know how harmful they'll be until later.

    I hate flies with a passion @jhysmath!

The bump is so great. One of the mums from my DD’s BMB is my best friend and when we lived closer would hang out all the time. I’ve moved 1000 miles away so we don’t see each other as often, but we still talk every single day. I also work in the same industry as another and we also used to catch up all the time. Don’t chat as often, but whenever I’m back in the capital city we all catch up together. It’s great.

Oh wow @whitta1015 that sounds hectic. Take some time to do something relaxing just for you.  Can’t imagine how stressful that all would have been!

Oh noooo @mamamoomoo12! Hope you have a mild case & recovering in no time.

My gripe is that if I put on more than 5lbs from now until 36 weeks I won't be able to birth where I live and will be flown to the capital city 1000 miles away to wait it out. We can't afford to do that financially because it means my husband will need to take time off work while we're down there and will have to pay for accommodation too. I had also planned to work until I popped because I don't get much maternity leave and don't want to be returning to work with a 2 month old baby. I am so, so annoyed that we are supposed to be the main birthing centre of our area but have absolutely no resources here. The reason you can't birth if you over BMI is over 40 is because they don't have the facilities to treat you if you need an anaesthetic and have complications from it. The whole BMI thing is so ridiculous too - how does BMI even work when you're pregnant?! Once I have my baby I'll be 10-15lbs lighter (baby, amniotic fluid and placenta weight) almost instantly & my BMI will drop significantly. Ridiculous.

  • @wiseh well I would have been screwed in that circumstance because with my first kid I gained 80lbs and I lost 30lbs in 3 days. Lost the rest of weight 7 months later. I wish they would chill out on the weight obsessions in healthcare. I didn’t have a single complication and was perfectly healthy. My mom gained the same amount with us. Everyone is different, ya know? I wouldn’t want to return to work with a 2 month old either. Sucks this is over 5lbs- I fluctuate that on a daily basis!
  • I hear you on the weight thing.  I had a different doctor for the last cervical check who chastised me because I have (by their measurements) gained 14 pounds so far.  If I were "normal" weight to start with they'd consider this perfect but because I was heavier to start with, "that's too much."

@foreveronyourside yep! With my DD I put on 15kg in the last 10 weeks and my BMI was well over 40 but nobody bat an eyelid. That was in a regional hospital in a different state. I was speaking to a friend this evening & she said only 1 hospital in our entire state will accept mums with a BMI over 40!
  • @mamamoomoo12 oh no! Wishing you a quick and smooth recovery.

@wiseh what a bizarre situation, I'm so sorry you're dealing with that!

A weird upshot to my dealing with specialists latetly is that they don't even take my weight. I suppose someone might have something to say when I see my OB for a cervical check on the 23rd, but so far I've escaped the weight obsession issue that so many of you have had to deal with.

  • @wiseh @lilienne all this discussion about weight had me thinking… I haven’t stepped on the scale in a while… so I did after my shower tonight and I’ve gained exactly 30lbs. I guess I know what the topic of discussion is going to be at my midwife appointment on Monday 🥲 Hubby says he’s cutting me off sweets. He’s right, but why does that make me mad? Haha I just wanna eat and be happy.
  • @wiseh that's do bizarre. The local hospital (were onnan island) will only let you give birth here if everything is "uncomplicated". As long as you've had a normal pregnancy and your baby is head down they'll let you stay. For gestational diabetes they won't let you stay but that's only because they don't have a NICU if baby would need after birth. Also, that's such BS to make you pay for the expenses of having to travel so far to have the baby. I guess I can be thankful for Norway who will foot the bill if we have to travel to a bigger hospital. If it's personal choice then we foot the bill.

Ok let me start by saying I'm super grateful for the people in our lives and I know they just want to support and love us and our baby...
But... How do you reign in the family members that just want to buy EVERYTHING?! DH and I have a small house and we don't want it being taken over by stuff. Obviously I know a baby comes with a lot of stuff, it's all the extras that people want to buy that drive us crazy! Anybody else dealing or have dealt with this?
  • wisehwiseh member
@babywiik the government has a "patient access travel scheme" but it only covers $50 per night in a hotel and $20 per night in an AirBNB. They have a NICU here, their concern is for their ability to care for the mother. I think if push comes to shove, I am just going to go back to my parents' house & birth there because at least I won't have to pay for accommodation! Not ideal, but is what is it..

@kmelynn can you just tell them you already have everything you need? Or create a registry with exactly what you want & tell people to only purchase off there, and if there is nothing left to buy and they desperately want to contribute then they can give you money or gift vouchers to use as baby gets older. Because babies are expensive! People typically only gift you very newborn clothes & nothing for when they're older, so a gift voucher allows you to buy clothes as you need them in the season that you need them in.
  • @kmelynn I told everyone our space is so small for our first and gave the registry with specific items that were space saving. I made it clear we don't live in a space that allowed for larger items. Now clothes, we were given far too much clothing, and we still get too much for new babies. No idea how to stop that, but I've stopped feeling guilty automatically donating the ugly clothes I don't like with the tags still on.
  • @jhysmath @kmelynn I did the same thing - my MIL would bring me car loads of stained clothes and books literally ripped in half along with baby bouncers from the 90s. I just never took it out of my van and dropped it off at Goodwill. I was worried she would find out but she’s way too flighty too keep track of that stuff and always has new crap to bring. She’s happy and I don’t have the junk!
  • @foreveronyourside my MIL recently found out about thrift stores and buys us ugly clothes, not tons, but still ugly. My husband didn't realize that's what she was doing until I showed him a jacket she bought that had another kids name inside it. I will say, I would take most of the thrift finds she brings over the ugliest granimals Walmart stuff, or the few times she decided she'd order from patpat and I'm pretty sure we had 9 month old leopard print stripper clothes.
  • I added a bunch of fsa eligible stuff to my Amazon registry thinking I'd buy it and get close to the diaper discount program... Turns out that ended in 2020 I'm super bummed. I used it for both of my kids and loved getting an extra 20 percent off diapers.
  • Dear June, why are you so set on me having dinner at 6:30pm?
I am assuming that’s it but I really, REALLY don’t love the “At 6:30, be eating or aggressively nauseated” which has been exceedingly consistent.
  • @mamamoomoo12 Oh no!! Hope your symptoms are mild and you recover quickly!

  • @foreveronyourside I hope today's midwife appointment goes okay!

  • @lilienne It was fine! I lied and gave myself a 5lb credit which I realize I’m going to be in trouble for when they actually see me next! Blood pressure and baby are doing fantastic! I’m such an idiot! I just chickened out!

@foreveronyourside In all fairness, an average female can fluctuate up to 5lb from day to day depending on food intake, hydration, salt intake, and quality/lack of bowel movement - even if you weigh yourself at the same time of day and it feels like you have done all the same things as the last time.

Personally, I haven't been weighing myself very often, like maybe once every week/every other week, but it's always in the morning, naked, before eating or drinking, post-bowel movement, and when I've hydrated reasonably well the day before... thankfully, my midwife said it matters little for as long as baby is developing like she should and I am healthy and happy.
She briefly mentioned my 15-25lb gain bracket, but then emphasized that BMI and weight is really just an easy metric to use but it's also greatly overrated and she's not a fan.
