@lbonista re: Benedryl, I would check with your OB. I have a medical condition where I have to be on 24/7 antihistamines (among other things) and was told any amount of that (Benedryl) was a hard no during pregnancy.

  • @lbonista my OB said Benadryl is fine. Maybe it just depends on who your OB is.
  • @theblondebump shortness of breath is definitely normal! Very annoying, but normal.
  • @theblondebump yes,  me too! I was a hard core Peloton-er, and still spin but not as hard core, and I get breathless with the smallest things now. Its so frustrating lol
  • @theblondebump +1, definitely had it with all 3 pregnancies. It's most noticeable for me when I walk up stairs or up a hill. We don't really walk very fast since our 3yo is usually walking lol so that seems to be the worst (I am in no condition to be working out - I think I'd throw up). But until I started feeling like crap with morning sickness/the air quality getting bad here, I was running 3-4 miles 4-5x/week with the jogging stroller so at least in okay shape. I found this on parents.com b/c I know later on it's the blood volume that causes it but wasn't sure what it was in first tri: Shortness of breath in early pregnancy is caused by increased levels of progesterone. In the first trimester, it can be difficult to breathe as your body adjusts to new hormonal levels. This symptom might go away after a few weeks, then make a resurgence during the second or third trimester.

@BuckeyeNut05 So I asked an OB when I had to call the office for a question but it wasn't my specific one.  I am still in my first tri, so it makes me nervous.  But I really need it for my rashy legs, otherwise I am up all night.  Online it says its category B, so def safer than most things during pregnancy.  I have another appt in 2 weeks where I guess I can bring it up.
  • @kvh22 ok this is reassuring! I was just at an appointment two days ago and asked about it and the ob was like hmm that's not really normal, you should see your general practitioner about that. but she was very bitchy (I changed practices right after that appointment) haha. So I'm just going to ignore what she said.
  • @theblondebump I wonder if that OB had been pregnant before? When you say shortness of breath it sounds worse than what I think those of us who have experienced know what you mean - that you get out of breath more easily with much less physical exertion.

  • @theblondebump I’m definitely experiencing some shortness of breath too - especially if I’m carrying DD2 around and trying to talk, haha! It’s like I just need a second to catch my breath and then I’m fine. I agree with @kvh22, maybe that OB has never been pregnant!
  • @theblondebump yeah I had shortness of breath in previous pregnancies too. Unless you’re not able to regain it in a reasonable amount of time I wouldn’t stress too much, or it’s causing other health issues. With my first kid I remember trying to do Christmas shopping at the mall and I was on the complete opposite side from where I parked and I just sat on a bench and cried and called my mom because I was tired and didn’t want to carry the bags across the mall! I was only like 3 months pregnant too!
  • That makes sense. @kvh22 @bblair24 She was quite young so I feel like its definitely possible maybe she had never been pregnant. I explained that I sometimes would get out of breath after just going up a flight of stairs, even though that was never the case pre-pregnancy. She literally said to me during that conversation "You sound a little bit congested and that could be contributing to shortness of breath, but I don't know, maybe you're not congested and that's just your voice." She literally had zero "bedside manner."

Hahah @theletlers I can see myself doing the same thing.
  • BuckeyeNut05 okay that is VERY good to know because I’ve never thought about what I’d need it to look like after. Can I pick your brain a bit? Who did it for you (OB or plastic surgeon?)? Did it help, besides not being thrilled with how it looks now? So I got mine after baby #1 and it’s just the most annoying thing ever!!! My OB has always said to wait until I was totally done having kids to fix it so we’ve waited - plus I heard that it’s a pretty major abdominal surgery, right? Like can’t lift anything for a while after? It’s definitely, definitely something I want to do after this (final) baby!!! Would love any other thoughts you have!
  • cagncoo12 yay!!!!!! 💕💕💕 congrats!!!

@theblondebump yes on shortness of breath AND congestion. Currently battling allergies but I’ve always had nasal congestion while pregnant!
  • @kvh22 you are a WEALTH of knowledge, lady! This is #4 for me and I’m over here reading your posts going ooooooooooh so THATS why!! 🤣🤣
  • @goldpolkadot lol I like to look this stuff up. I forget half of it but I want to know "whyyyy?" for everything.

  • @goldpolkadot a general surgeon did mine. He was recommended to me by my general practitioner. I wanted my abs sewn back together, too, because I have major separation but was told that this is cosmetic, and a plastic surgeon would have to do it and it wouldn’t be covered by insurance. I asked if I had the plastic surgeon repair the hernia and then sew my abs back together while they’re in there if they’d cover it and was told that plastic surgeons don’t do hernia repairs. So....I guess it helped but to be honest I don’t notice much of a difference.  I bet I’d notice a difference if I had my abs repaired, too. My strength is just gone in my abs after pregnancies and c-sections.  And I would have waited to do that surgery had I known I would change my mind about a 4th. It did hurt, but compared to my c-sections the pain wasn’t that bad. But no, you can’t really lift anything for a little bit and you’ll walk like an old, old person in a nursing home for a week or two.
  • @BuckeyeNut05 very interesting!! Thanks for sharing all that! Yea, the no lifting bit is a huge part of why I waited too - I do bedtime solo most nights & need to be able to get the baby into the crib!!
