@anxiouswife I proudly purchased and used a fetal doppler for a short while during my last pregnancy. Then I mentioned using it to my mother-in-law, and she responded with a quick, “Have you looked into the risks of those? I don’t think you should use those.” I felt so judged and shamed that I didn’t use it again for the rest of the pregnancy.
When I did my own research, I found that dopplers and ultrasounds should be done sparingly due to exposure to waves which heat body tissue slightly. Overexposure to the heat can cause potential harm to the baby. Another concern was the average person won’t be as accurate with a doppler as a trained professional in interpreting the heart rate itself, causing a false sense of panic or a false sense of security. Therefore, most articles I read advised that dopplers be left to medical experts. One article noted that the mother thought she heard the baby’s heart, but it was most likely really her own, and there ended up being an issue with the baby that the mom didn’t detect. The baby’s heart is obviously going to be much faster than an adult’s, but maybe not everyone knows that.
With that being said, there were several appointments where trainees accompanied my regular doctor or midwife (I saw both during my last pregnancy), and many of them either took forever to find the heart rate, or didn’t manage to find it at all. I’m not sure how a student taking their sweet time to locate a heartbeat that I can usually do myself in half the time at home is considered safer, but that’s just my humble opinion. I never listened for an extended period of time, I limited my use to once a week, and if there WERE moments that I couldn’t find the heartbeat in a timely fashion, I just put the doppler aside and tried again later.
Still, after my MIL made that comment, I felt so guilty that I haven’t touched it since. Lol.
@gomillis my daughter is 3.5 and she still wears pill ups for naps and bedtime. I’ve noticed that for her naps she has been more dry than wet recently. But she still wakes up with a wet pull up in the morning. I tired to do the night training, but I hated having to wake up in the middle of the night, and I didn’t like waking her because she always did not fall right back to sleep. So I’m not pushing the issue until she tells me that she’s ready.

@lachnessmomster I'm sorry your MIL made you feel that way ☹ There are definitely nicer ways to express concerns to someone. The way I see it, it's your body and you can do whatever you want with it. Thank you for sharing though! I did order a doppler and thought it might be fun when I visit my parents and such.
@lachnessmomster I'm watching MadMen now for the first time... and Joan is totally a babe... I always think she should topple over lol.
@anxiouswife I've read that it isn't always that easy to locate the heartbeat right away... I tend to be a nervous person so I think I would drive myself unnecessarily crazy and stressed with this. So I won't be getting one. I've seen that you can rent them now too.

Baby is the size of a(n): blueberry/headphone earbud
Upcoming appointments: 1/21 to meet with the dr and review my bloodwork results
How are you feeling? Blah... so tired and waves of nausea that seem to be getting worse. I'm eating lots of carbs to combat the nausea and feeling so bloated and gross. I don't weigh myself regularly so don't know what I've gained at this point. Oh well...
Raves/Rants: Looking forward to the three day weekend... but I have lots of running around to do so won't be relaxing much, boo.
Questions:
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? The Office, Friends, SATC. I've rewatched Breaking Bad and GoT (prior to the last season). There's lots of movies I can watch over and over and can't name them all: Elf, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, The Proposal, but one of my absolute faves is Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Baby is the size of a(n): Brussels sprout
Upcoming appointments: 1/16 for my NIPT and then an appointment (where hopefully I can hear the heartbeat) on 1/28
How are you feeling? Mostly good! Have been really tired today, and nausea has been a little stronger the past few days after tapering off for a bit, but overall pretty good. I also had some first trimester anxiety come back over the weekend, so trying to manage that and just be thankful that today I'm pregnant and everything seems on track.
Raves/Rants: Rant: I can't seem to shake my $8 green smoothie habit. Every day I say today will be different, but then it's the only thing I actually can stomach first thing in the morning. Rave: Had a great meeting with a doula practice yesterday. Met three of their doulas and now the tough part is deciding who I'd like to work with. The great thing about signing now is it's the same cost as signing later, and they actively encourage you to text/call with questions and updates once they have your paperwork. I also have an acupuncture session this evening. I LOVE acupuncture, and my acupuncturist has been on vacation for a month, so it will be my first session since finding out I'm pregnant. Excited to see how it might be different.
Questions: Anyone else doing pre-natal yoga in a studio yet? I'm thinking of going this weekend, but a little worried I'm not "pregnant" enough.
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? Gilmore Girls! Schitts Creek! Veep! Currently rewatching The Office for the first time and am finding it a very fun and soothing show while I'm hunkered down for winter.
@rivercitynik I'm so tempted to begin prenatal yoga as well, but haven't gotten the motivation yet. That same thought did cross my mind... but all the women with bellies weren't showing at some point, so they should understand, right? lol... I mean once you are pregnant you shouldn't be doing "regular" yoga anyways... I say go for it! I'm debating on going tomorrow or Thursday, depending how I'm feeling. Or maybe I'll do the treadmill since that's in my house hahaha. And your green smoothie sounds deliciously healthy! Where do you get it from?

Baby is the size of a(n): Tic Tac
Upcoming appointments: Had one today! Next in a month.
How are you feeling? Nausea on and off, better than with my last pregnancy but still sucks. Overall my symptoms have been better this time, so I shouldn't complain.
Raves/Rants: Baby looked good today! Heart beat was 150 and measuring on track.
Questions: I'm supposed to pick between three NIPT companies: Progenity, Invitae, and Natera. Anyone have any recommendations?
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? The only shows I've rewatched are Arrested Development and The Office. I dont like rewatching movies, unless it's like old musicals or Christmas movies.
Upcoming appointments: 1/27 for ultrasound, bloodwork, and appointment with the midwife
How are you feeling? Exhausted. Starving. Anxious.
Raves/Rants: Raves: Last week I was able to shadow an IBCLC at the local hospital, both in postpartum and in the NICU. It was fascinating. Next week I'm shadowing in an outpatient breastfeeding clinic. I'm slowly expanding my career path to include more work with infants, which is exciting and not at all what I originally thought I'd be doing. Rant: I have been waking up almost every night around 3/4am and can't go back to sleep for over an hour. There's no reason for me to be waking up, yet I do. It's getting really old.
Questions: Am I the only one that's not feeling bloated? What does a bump feel like? I keep pushing on my lower abdomen but it feels the same as always.
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? Harry Potter, definitely. I don't tend to rewatch a lot (not the biggest TV fan) but I do like to watch those movies when I'm not feeling great. I was a huge HP fan back in the day, so it's very nostalgic for me.
@rivercitynik If I ever get a good night's sleep and feel rested enough to drive across town, I'll be doing prenatal yoga soon!
Have had same thoughts about prenatal yoga! It just seems like it would feel weird walking in bumpless, but I guess you're paying them for a workout regardless 🤣 I was an avid OTFer and played volleyball 2 nights/week but recently have dropped OTF and just been taking it easy walking inclines on the treadmill for some low intensity cardio. I dont want the rest of my muscles to turn to mush though and some yoga seems like itd be a nice supplement to cardio!
@wednesdaygirl1019, I think the easiest way is to tighten your abs and then feel them. Poke your belly with stiff fingers. You might have a layer of fat over your abs like I do, but through the fat, you should feel your hard abs underneath. And those muscles will be flat (it sounds like this is your first baby, they may not be as flat if you've had a diastis and it hasn't fully healed, or I suppose potentially other medical conditions). You'll start to notice that your ab muscles are no longer flat but are starting to bulge out. I'm 12 weeks and definitely noticing it! I do have a diastis, but the bulge has obviously increased slightly.
If you lie down flat, you may be able to feel your uterus. It's hard and round and just start feeling at your pubic bone and then move up slowly.
@rivercitynik@ziggymama06@jojokoodles I’ve been waiting to start prenatal yoga for the same reasons! I think I will start once I’m done with the first tri.
@sarah0985@blackgirlmagic@tara4910@radiohd18 thanks for your thoughts! DS’s new teacher was really discouraging about wearing pull ups so we stopped. But honestly they were working well for us and saved me a lot of hassle. I really like the idea of making it his choice!
@ziggymama06 I am a HUGE anxiety bug too, so I'm going to try and only use it once a week at the most. But I guess it would be nice after a hard day or if I'm really anxious about baby? I dunno, lol. DH laughed at me tonight when I told him my plan, so... challenge accepted! 😂
Team Finding Out/Pink/Blue/Green: Me: Team Green, My husband: Team Finding Out, we'll see who wins.
Baby is the size of a(n): cherry.
Upcoming appointments: First midwife appointment tomorrow.
How are you feeling? Currently, cycling between nausea, being ravenously hungry and having indigestion.
Raves/Rants: My toddler has been waking up in the night a lot, especially on days that I have work.
Questions: What do people think about STM doing reviews on their big ticket baby items a bit later on when people are starting to think about buying baby kit. I know when I was buying things for my son that it was really unusual to get a review from somebody that had owned their product for more than 2 months and if your going to be spending $500-$1000 on a pushchair you want to know how it's going to perform in the long term.
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? Ru Pauls Drag Race.
I'm still BF my first baby too. I've been trying to wean him recently and it's going ok, this week I'm trying to drop the morning feed so were just down to before bed and in the night if he wakes up. I know that in theory you can can keep feeding them but he's 16m this week and I'm just done.
@rivercitynik@ziggymama06@jojokoodles@gomillis I've got a pretty regular home practice of yoga, but didn't during my last pregnancy. I started pouring myself into research and most things I read agreed that as soon as you hit second trimester, you should absolutely start eliminating moments that have you flat on your back for extended amounts of time, flat on your stomach, eliminate inversions from your practice unless you had a well established practice that included inversions, and eliminate anything that has your body doing mid-line twists (anything that may be squishing the baby's space). I'm still a small ways from second trimester, but I'm already eliminating many moments and working on substituting in more open stretches and eliminating positions have have me on my belly (it's already uncomfortable/painful). Yoga is so freaking good for your body, especially when it comes to opening and stretching, and working on controlled breathing, I really think you guys should just go to the class when you want to go. On top of the fact that everybody is different, some people will show fast, others will show slower.. the sooner you get into the practice the more love you're giving your body. Love your bodies, love your growing babies, do what makes you feel good.
Upcoming appointments: Meeting with a nurse on 1/20 just to chat about things, 12 week ultrasound on 1/31.
How are you feeling? Been getting headaches (I had to discontinue my migraine meds), indigestion, and tired. Can't complain too much overall though.
Raves/Rants: Just got back from a long weekend getaway with my husband for our 5 year wedding anniversary. It was so relaxing and peaceful.
Questions: How do I deal with this anxiety between appointments? I had my first US on 1/3 and don't have another until 1/31. Constantly afraid something may have happened to the baby especially since I'm not showing yet/can't feel movements. Also how do I copy and paste from the original post without having to "quote" and making it gray like this!
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? Grey's Anatomy!
Baby is the size of a(n): paper clip, which seems smaller than last week
Upcoming appointments: Lab drop in next week for NIPT. I already did the paperwork and have the kit, just need to give the blood.
How are you feeling? This pregnancy is so much harder than my last one. My digestive system is a mess and I’m so exhausted and unable to focus on anything. I would love to have more kids, but I’m glad that if all goes well this will be my last pregnancy.
Raves/Rants: I realized yesterday that I’m 25% through this pregnancy. Part of me is sad it’s going so fast, but most of me is excited to be done with all-day sickness in a few weeks and to meet my baby in a few months!
Questions: N/A
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? I don’t really like to rewatch things, but I can never get tired of L&O and classic 90s movies.
@gomillis I think we are going to try nap training soon since she’s mostly dry then, and night training after we get into a routine with the new babe but are still up 1-2x a night. I’m also not opposed to diapers forever at bedtime if it means not washing sheets daily. Some kids just take longer to physically be able to control it at night, and that’s okay.
@alleykat2020 I also cried over a salad a few weeks ago because they forgot the tomatoes and avocado and I was so hungry, but I needed the avocado. I went back and got a new salad and then they took my plastic fork when they took the wrong salad and didn’t give me a new one. It was so tragic lol. I ate with my fingers until I could calm down and find a new fork.
Follow up ultrasound this morning went great... Baby grew exactly two weeks in two weeks time and has a strong heartbeat measuring 169. They are going to stick with my LMP due date of 8/28 (TW in spoiler)
woke up this morning to a gush of bright red blood, so I thought it was over. Was thankful I already had an ultrasound scheduled early in the morning. They found a small SCH, but it's so small they say they wouldn't have found it if they hadn't been searching for blood. It only measured a few mm large (I forget the exact measurements)... they said they have faith everything will be fine and it won't cause any harm. I'm glad to have an answer to the bleeding that is more positive than I thought it would be this morning.
The first trimester is bringing out some major anxiety for me, but today I have some relief. I go back for my "first official prenatal" appointment in about 2.5 weeks when I'll be 10+5 and they'll try to find the heart on the doppler. I'm hoping to remain as chill as I can for the next few weeks.
Upcoming appointments: Most likely 1/31 for NIPT and then my next actual appointment is 2/13
How are you feeling? So exhausted, hungry, nauseous if I don't eat every hour, bloated, moody, and out of breath. But it's much better than weeks 5-7 where the nausea was intense and constant! Also, I feel like my sense of smell, while still strong, has finally chilled a bit.
Raves/Rants: I'm going to take so many naps over this long weekend. I can't wait.
Questions:
GTKY: what is the movie or show series you watch over and over? I really don't like watching things more than once! Maybe this is an unpopular opinion? If it's been long enough that I've entirely forgotten what happens in the episode, then I might rewatch it. Or if there's a nostalgic connection to a movie, I'll rewatch it, but it has to be a few years later.
@tara4910 I was measuring a week behind my LMP on my first U/S, so they changed the due date right then (8 weeks). I wasn't surprised since I know my cycles are longer than average and I have at least a hunch as to when I ovulated. From reading other people's experiences, it sounds like if your actual measurements and expected measurements based on LMP are only off by a day or two, doctors don't always change the due date. Aren't measurements more accurate earlier on? If so, it would make sense to either adjust it in first tri or not at all. But I'm just guessing!
@anxiouswife I'm personally not getting a doppler because, knowing myself, I would probably obsess over it too much.
@buhundbae I've felt pretty nervous throughout my pregnancy, so I wanted to wait until my first ultrasound to share the news. Now that it went well, my husband and I plan to tell some family members this weekend. But I will probably wait a while longer to tell the rest of our families... maybe closer to 12 weeks. Coworkers I plan to tell at some point after first tri, though I might tell one or two sooner. As thankful and excited as we are, I'm not in a hurry to post our news on social media. Maybe around month 4? Anyway, I know a lot of people like to share sooner, so I think you should just do whatever makes you feel best!
