What is baby weighing?

Hello! Haven’t been here much but I was curious what everyone’s baby is weighing? I had my anatomy scan 6/19 and he was 15 oz. they didn’t get all the pictures needed so I went back today, 4 weeks later and he is 2lbs 7oz!! I’m only 24 weeks! I was hoping the dr would call me today but they didn’t so I’ll have to wait until Monday.

Lol that’s a big boy!! I went in for my 24 week and my baby is 1lb 10oz and I’m thinking that’s a little big! I couldn’t imagine a 2 pounder!!

I’m not sure how accurate they are with weight so honestly I wouldn’t put much stock into it. Although, be aware, if they feel you are having a very big baby they may push for a scheduled c-section. Most of the time, that’s never even necessary.

When I was pregnant with DS the weight estimate when he was 38 weeks was 9lbs. He was born at nearly 41 weeks at 7 lbs 4 oz. I don't put any stock in their weight estimates.

True - I once had a doctor tell me that the weight usually fluctuates about 2lbs in either direction so while they use it for their own notes, it doesn't mean much.

Yes to the weight fluctuating +/- 2lbs. I was told the same. I was also told at some point (around 34 weeks) at MFM that my baby was measuring 6lbs already according to her belly. When she was born at 38 weeks she weighed 6lbs 9 oz. They made it seem like I was going to have this gigantic baby because I had GD but I had a sweet little peanut.

@creamcheeseplease @purplefan1 so much yes to the you're having a huge baby alarmist doctors. With my son I guess they were basing it off my weight gain (40 lbs give or take by the end) and they were practically telling me I might not be able to have him naturally. 8lbs 2oz but they were predicting 10+ ugh. I feel like it hardly matters

Imaging estimates can be off +/- 10-15% so they aren't terribly exact.  The trend is more productive than any one scan.  I was told at 34 or 36 weeks that the baby was already 10lbs and they recommended a scheduled c-section.  I rolled my eyes and assumed they were way off and making assumptions because of my weight...but I ended up with an 11lb + baby with a big ol' head! So, sometimes they are right.  This time they are projecting between 8 and 9 lbs if the growth curve stays the same which makes me happy. We just make big babies in my family. My Dad was over 10lbs in 1948, my sister and I were both near 8lbs and both my nieces were 8lbs and change.  

I would just wait and see what the trend looks like over time and whether baby's head is measuring larger than baby's belly.

@drama_llama - I grow big babies too.  Although thank goodness they stay in the 9lbs and not over 10. Ow.

I was told by a doctor once that whatever your mom had are more likely to point towards what you are going to have lb wise and ease of labor.  Although not always true, it has been my experience that my first 2 matched my moms trends.

@Dancer688 I’m going to hold out hope for that theory! That would mean my 2nd would be a smaller baby! Not that my first was huge, but she was right below the 8lb mark!

Is it normal for doc to be estimating weight this early on? Mine hasn’t told me anything and I’m assuming won’t be able to until I have my next sonogram which I don’t think is until 30/32 weeks.

My doctor measures weight during ultrasounds but hasn’t measured height or fundal height even.  Guess every practice is different.  At my last ultrasound at 26w4d baby was 2 lbs even, which doc said was 44% percentile.

They keep telling me mine is in the 75% for weight. They haven’t given me an actual weight since the AS. 

Im sure they will try to frighten me with some already 8lb baby at my next US. 😑

They gave me a weight estimate at my AS at week 18. But they told me it was just an estimate based on a couple of different measurements.

I’ve never been given weight estimates during any ultrasounds.  My sister was told my first niece was going to be over ten pounds and was terrified.  She was 7 lb 11oz when she was born, so they were pretty far off!  Her head was 90th percentile, so that’s probably where the estimate was skewed.  So far, for me and my sister, our babies have been smaller than both of us when we were born.

I don't think I've been given a specific weight estimate at any of the u/s right now but I know when I go back for my 34-ish week scan they will, they did that last time. I think that's also when my placenta is being checked again to see if its moved so I'm definitely more concerned about that than the weight estimate. My brother and I were both in the 6 lb range and DS was low 7lb so I'm not too worried this one will be much different.

Side note I like how we've all continued to discuss this but haven't heard anything else from OP?

Our clinic never tells us the baby's estimated "weight." I actually asked about it during my first pregnancy. Our doctor said the +/- on the estimate is such a large range, that he would be more accurate to just tell us the average baby weight at that point in the pregnancy. Even with an AS, the weight is calculated by a formula of different measurements, so it's still just an estimate.

My sister was told during both her pregnancies how big her babies were, how far ahead she was measuring, etc. Then both babies were born 7-8 lbs. My friend was also told the same thing, and they actually scheduled a C-section early because of it, then her baby was born 7 lbs. In my experience, it just makes the mom unnecessarily worry.

@creamcheeseplease that is the joy of one-off posts. They make these AW/SS threads cluttering up our board and never bother to actually participate in the conversation. I find it very annoying.
