Team Finding Out/Blue/Pink/Green: finding out at our next appointment

Upcoming Appointments: June 17th for anatomy scan.. and finding out the sex!!

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): still have random days where I’m nauseous all day and get headaches some mornings

Rants/Raves: rave- I finally feel like I have a visible bump! Also we’re on our last week of our kitchen renovation!! Cannot wait to have a functional kitchen again! It’s been 2 weeks!

Questions: mom poll- did your 3-6 month old sleep enough overnight and during naps that you could’ve gotten in 6 hours of work in a day. Trying to figure out if it’s feasible for me to work from home part time for a few months after maternity leave before returning to work and using day care.

  • @kopp5988 it totally depends on your work.  Do you have conference calls or client calls?  Or more just computer work?  My sister has done two days a week at home since my niece was four months (she’s 2 now) and just occasionally needs help when she has a client call, but otherwise can juggle it.

My son started to nap in his crib around 4 months for two of his most solid naps, but didn’t sleep through the night until 10 months.  His other naps were on me in the wrap or sling.  Each baby is so different.  I think it would be doable if you get into babywearing before they can entertain themselves with toys for a bit.  The naps are generally predictable when they’ll happen, but length can differ making it hard to schedule things.  I’ll be working from home this time around, but it’s for our own business and my photography business, so a little more flexible. I will have to talk to clients, but I’m not concerned about having kid sounds in the background!

I really liked the Baby Sleep Site, she’s a sleep consultant and has some sample schedules for each age that might be helpful to you to get a better idea.  https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-sleep-feeding-schedules/
There’s tons of sleep consultants out there, this is just one I found during one desperate night and I went with it, but search around and find one that you like.  They pretty much all have Facebook support groups too which are helpful.

Upcoming Appointments: not until the end of the month

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): feeling pregnant, same old nausea and throwing up a few times a week, always around dinner time so at least it’s predictable.  RLP is full force this week, I forgot how bad it can hurt!

Rants/Raves: the sun is out today!!  It’s been super foggy and blah feeling all weekend.  We’re going for a walk in a few and I’m so excited, as are my pale, pale legs that desperately need some sunshine!

    Questions: none

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category.
I live on the beach and wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.  My husband and I both grew up in our town (we went to kindergarten together), and our families are still here, but even if that wasn’t the case I’d pick beach/ocean alllll day.   Nothing beats the salt air and the sunrises!

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): better this week! I've only had one moment of nausea and havent thrown up in over a week 👌

Rants/Raves: Rave - I think I've been feeling movement here and there finally!
Rant - I need to vaccum the house, and I dont want to.

    Questions: none

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category.

I would love a mountain/lake place! I love the big mountains out west and would take a house in the them any day! I used to want a ranch in Montana, until we lived in Montana for 4 years. Absolutely gorgeous country, but the winters are a bit more than I want for the rest of my life. So maybe a summer ranch? The summers are lovely there, just short lived.

  • @kopp5988 I also agree it may depend on the type of work, but also on the baby. My son slept ok at night between 3-6m but was still in our bed and I was nursing him 1-2 times a night still. He was the kind of baby that would immediately wake up when you tried to lay him down, so he napped exclusively on me for a long time because it was the only way he'd nap. So certain kinds of work may have been hard to do with him sleeping on me for 1-2 hours of nap time.

Upcoming Appointments: US on the 24th and Heartbeat Check on the 26th

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): Hungry like ALL the time.  Headaches most days and moodiness.  But otherwise this is the good part haha

Rants/Raves: Rave - It is my birthday week! I don't really do anything special for it but go out to dinner.  But it is mine and I still get excited about it.

Questions:  None really. Unless someone wants to come over and potty train my youngest.  We are gearing up and I am exhausted just thinking about it.

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category.
I loveeee Boulder/Denver area, if I could live on a lake that also had the mountain view in the background.  That would be hard to beat.  That being said, I live on the East Coast about 10/15 minutes from the beach so I can't complain.  No views for us but plenty of access.

  • @kopp5988 - My first ended up being a terrible sleeper.  I had all the plans to work from home but she ended those dreams fast.  She didn't sleep through the night until 18 months.  That being said, my friends baby slept through the night and napped perfectly starting around 2 months and she worked from home no problem so it really just depends on the kid.

    Team Finding Out/Blue/Pink/Green: Pink

    Upcoming Appointments: Anatomy scan 6/17

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): Today, not too good. Just run down and exhausted, and I have a cold. I have busy Mondays in the summer so that isn't helping today.

Rants/Raves: I made banana bread so I'm currently eating a slice of that with my yogurt, so good!

Questions: I know soft serve ice cream is on the do not eat list because the machine if not cleaned well/often can have bacteria/listeria. They have a soft serve machine here in the cafe at work and I'm wondering how seriously I should avoid? I do see them cleaning it, but obviously have no clue actually how often/how well it is cleaned. What would you do?

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category.
Absolutely beach/ocean. I love the sound of the waves and the peaceful feeling of the ocean.

@kopp5988 the others have pretty much covered it, but if you are expected to be on the phone a lot or speaking with clients I would not attempt it. My son did not consistently nap at any consistent time until he was nearly a year old. He did not sleep through the night early either. However if you have flexibility on when your hours can be worked, or help from someone else who can come over and help with the baby, I'd say go for it.

@Dancer688 Happy Birthday week! Mine is Saturday :)

@gumby22c MH went through this phase a few months ago where he was looking up property in Montana. So beautiful!

    @rogro118 enjoy the sunshine!
  • @rogro118 @gumby22c @Dancer688 @creamcheeseplease thank you all for weighing. I’m trying to ask as many moms as possible since I know it depends on the baby so the more opinions I get will help. I definitely will have conference calls that I’ll have to be on but I can have pretty good control over the times of those.

@rogro118 thanks for that link it’s super helpful! I hope you nausea and vomiting start to subside soon

@gumby22c my fingers are crossed that your streak continues!

@Dancer688 happy birthday week! I’m jealous how close you live to the beach! I grew up that close and miss it so much

@creamcheeseplease yum to banana bread. And I actually never heard of the soft serve no-no! So I would’ve probably already had some if I were you. But now knowing that I would be paranoid and avoid.

@kopp5988 yay for a working kitchen! I hope your news to work goes well :) I think I'm going to do mine Friday or Monday.
@gumby22c congrats on the vomit free week!! that's awesome!!

I live near the beach and honestly don't like it at all...it's always so much colder than in-land. I would like a lake surrounded by mountains.

  • @kopp5988 I found Taking Cara Babies on Instagram, and it seems to be so helpful! She offers online classes for newborns and then a couple of other ones that seem to be super effective (she did an Instant story profiling a mom who had almost given up and it seemed like her methods are working). I'm planning on following those, because I have to go back to school full time 6 weeks after baby is born (my program is not very flexible).

@creamcheeseplease as soon as I read banana bread I realized that that is exactly what I want to be eating right now. Thank you for that - I'll be making some this afternoon! As far as soft serve goes, I'd say it's up to you. The risk is quite small (especially if you've seen them clean it), though if you're generally a person who would stress or get anxious, maybe avoid it and opt for soft serve from a more reputable location? I go to Dairy Queen more often than I'd like to admit (but made my husband microwave my beautifully cooked steak until there was no pink left).
  • @creamcheeseplease Yikes that's the first I've heard of soft serve being an issue. Man, they don't want us to have any fun!

Upcoming Appointments: Anatomy scan 6/11, finally getting closer!

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): Occasional headaches but really good overall. I'm probably dehydrated since it's so hot now so I'm trying to do better with drinking water.

Rants/Raves: I'm really excited about a prenatal yoga class I'm signed up for tomorrow night. Turns out prenatal specific classes are a little limited here but I found a studio here that focuses totally on prenatal, postnatal, baby-wearing-friendly, and Mommy and me yoga classes. They have a new client special I'm going to check out but if I love I think I will splurge on a class package for the next few months.

Questions: I'll check out the breastfeeding thread a little closer but I'm kind of wondering...how long did it take those of you that do breastfeed or have tried to 'figure it out?' And if it didn't work for you, how long until you came to that conclusion? I'm getting nervous about registering for a bunch of things that I don't even know will work for me!

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category. Mountains for sure! I love hiking and being outdoors and mountain climates!
  • @creamcheeseplease I’ve never heard about the soft serve thing either, I’ve been eating it and did with my son as well!  I say go for it if you eat other stuff there and it’s overall clean 🍦

@okcmom mine mentioned gaining too much since my BMI is higher after a crappy year.  Honestly I think they focus way too much on their BMI chart and not enough on nutrition.  If she wants you to gain more, extra ice cream isn’t a very healthy answer.  I’d stick with fatty foods like avocado, nuts/nut butter, coconut oil/olive oil added to food when you can, and full fat dairy.  But everyone gains differently and it isn’t always a steady stream of gaining in my experience.  With my son, I didn’t gain consistently each week until the end of the second trimester.  As long as your nutrition is good, I personally don’t worry about weight gain, or lack of unless it seems like it could be a sign of an underlying problem and is accompanied with swelling.

@Dancer688 good luck potty training!  We tackled that over the winter, and I’m glad I did it while I could have a glass of wine!

@mc0303 eating sounds glorious!  I’m still eating like a toddler most days and having lots of small snacks.

@runningfortwo81 it took me a good month to really get in a good place with breastfeeding my son. In the beginning we struggled with a good latch, but i met with a lactation consultant a few times and she was a life saver! But to be honest, in the beginning it was more painful than i expected. My nipples were sore, raw and occasionally bled. After the first month, they kind of toughen up and after that it was seamless for us.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • @runningfortwo81 it takes at least a few weeks to find your groove.  We had a hard time due to tongue and lip ties, but I knew it would work for us and I wanted it to so I stuck with it.  Everyone is different, but I’d say a few weeks gives it a fair shot. There’s not a ton of stuff you need for breastfeeding honestly.  The breast pump is provided through insurance, and that’s the priciest.  Other than that, you’ll want some pads, freezer bags, a hakkaa, a good nursing bra, some nipple cream, a pillow, and I think that’s it, but nothing is super expensive.  I personally just bought my own nursing stuff with gift cards after my shower and didn’t register for any of it.

@runningfortwo81 I agree with everything rogro118 said. It was definitely a solid two weeks before I found my groove, and I had to really push through to not give up. I had a cracked nipple, and they were both sore and bleeding. I cried every time DD latched. But I went to a free breastfeeding support group at my hospital, and the lactation consultant helped me find new ways to hold DD so she wasn't sucking right on the cracked part. She also told me to express a little milk after each feeding and use that instead of nipple cream (breast milk can be very healing - some use it as chapstick for babies, too). After my nipples toughened up, it was easy and I absolutely loved it and the bonding experience with DD. I exclusively breastfed for the first year.

Look into renting the pump or see if insurance covers it. Get lots of pads and nursing sports bras. I also recommend keeping some formula samples on hand just in case. My cousin broke a blood vessel and her husband had to run out and get formula at 2 a.m.
  • @gumby22c @rogro118 @kj17-2 Thank you so much, ladies! I do know my insurance will cover a pump. I'm probably more intimidated by this part than anything else but I know my husband will be supportive of lacatation consultant or whatever else I need to do. And I do plan to keep formula on hand as backup!

  • @kopp5988 Ive been doing one job working from home since my child was 3 days old. There have definitely been times it hasnt been too bad and other times it was painful. She has notoriously been a terrible sleeper though. I would say get on as consistent of a schedule as possible with naps and start working with the baby on the day/night confusion as soon as you can. Does it matter when you put the hours in? Do you have to do them in one full swoop or in chunks? I had to usually break my work up in to about 45 minute increments and often was nursing while sitting at the computer. Even now that she is almost 3 I still try to get most of the work done while she is sleeping.

Also your own fatigue will be a factor. Many people say sleep when the baby sleeps but when you are using that time to get work done it some times feels like you never get a break or down time and it can be mentally and physically exhausting. I definitely think it is doable, especially if you can do it in incements and maybe do a chunk of it while your partner is home.
  • @purplefan1 how did you find working at home so soon after your child was born? Was your H home/around at that point? I will likely be doing that this time around and am curious.

RE breastfeeding, agree with PPs. It took us around a month to get in a groove, but also know that things can and will change. DS wouldn't latch, we started exclusively pumping, discovered the nipple shield, then he latched with that. We used that + pumping for around 4 months. Then when he was around 5 months, he completely refused to latch anymore, and we just did bottles with pumped milk + formula, and I stopped pumping when he was 7 months and went exclusively to formula.

Thanks for all the feedback on the soft serve.. I don't think I'm going to worry about it. I eat food from the cafe several times a week and have never gotten sick, so I think it will be fine.
  • @creamcheeseplease it wasnt bad. My husband was home (he got two weeks of paid paternity leave from his employer.  I got nothing. Thanks contract work.) So that did help. I did find though that even in early days if I was home she wanted me. Plus our nursing relationship was not great and she was nursing every 45 minutes for 40ish minutes at a time. That made things difficult. And I only worked for about an hour or so each day. This time will be more daily just because I have more to do for that job but I plan to do the same thing again.
  • @purplefan1 yes I’ve heard the whole sleep when they sleep advice but have also read that by the time they get to 3-4 months they start sleeping more at night so it’s not as necessary. I do have some flexibility on when I work. I’m a project manager so responding to a lot of emails and coordinating different teams and different projects. But I have my email on my phone for quick responses if I’m away from my computer at the moment, though it’s not so high importance/stress that I’m expected to respond immediately. I’m very lucky in that respect.

@alaluap thanks I will check her out!

Mountains for sure. I love it!
  • @runningfortwo81 it took me 3 months to get a good rhythm nursing my first EBF baby. It was painful but something I really wanted so I hung in there. Once we got past the initial struggle, it was smooth sailing. My 2nd, and 3rd EBF babies just latched on with no problems. They were good to go from birth. It all depends on how stressed you are and your commitment level. There is absolutely nothing wrong with throwing in the towel if that is what's best for you and your baby. I highly recommend reading a book on BF so you have a good knowledge of what to expect and how to hold the baby when nursing. It is all about helping the baby to latch correctly. It can be difficult but then, once it all clicks, it's easy.

@creamcheeseplease I always forget about the soft serve ice cream rule. I have already had my share of it without realizing it so I say go for it.

@dancer688 GL with the PT. I will be there in about 1.5 months with my youngest. She is so ready.

@kopp5988 I can't wait to see the before and after pics!! As far as being able to work from home, I have had babies that were great sleepers and super chill during the day and then there was DS2. That boy cried constantly. He had colic and some other health issues though. So he just needed me to comfort him. It was all day all night kind of thing. I was completely exhausted.

I would also choose mountain but I’m stressed just thinking about the daily maintenance of being so secluded and the environmental threats. Plus, you typically need pants so that’s one more strike.

  • @alaluap my doctor does fundal measurements, but not until later. I can't remember when they started with my first, maybe 24 weeks? I haven't been measured yet.

@cl4157 isn't it great how sometimes certain foods just really hit the spot for some reason! I really only experience that level of enjoyment for food when pregnant.

Upcoming Appointments: Just did spine bifida blood draw last week and heartbeat Doppler. Upcoming anatomy scan june 25!

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): Finally starting to show and boobs will NOT STOP GROWING! RLP is easing up and energy is almost back full force so I can run regularly again. Hungry every few hours and putting on what I think is healthy weight. Grow baby grow!

Rants/Raves: I read that Kombucha isn’t safe for pregnant women, and that recently has me bummed out because I love it!

Questions: Is everyone sleeping exclusively on their left side already? I’m not showing much yet, so it seems a bit silly and I’d love to be able to move back and forth a bit. I’m trying to train myself to sleep on the left, but get uncomfortable some nights.

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category - Anywhere with a mix would be ideal. Easy access to both mountains and water. Chicago is too flat!
  • @emeraldcity1214 that’s what I’m afraid of. I was a super colicky baby so I’m like damn karma is coming my way.  You should invite your friends over to help you pack 😂 multi-tasking!

@alaluap prematurely soggy greens are the worst! I don’t blame you for crying

@lex1111 I’m not yet. I’ve read that sleeping on your right is okay too and that’s more comfortable for me right now. Since I’m normally a stomach or back sleeper I’m just slowly transitioning to side. My OB said I have until 20 weeks to get off my back which isn’t too far now so I’m probably going to buy a pregnancy pillow now to keep me on my side and help with comfort
  • @kopp5988 After I had my son, DD2 came along. The girl is the easiest baby ever! She had my milk in within 24 hours, slept 4 hour stretches from the beginning, hardly ever cried. Just happy as can be. She still is for the most part. She is hitting the terrible 2's and it's been a bit of a doozy.
  • @emeraldcity1214 well I’m sure that w
as extra welcome for you after dealing with a colicky baby!! Fingers crossed we all get good sleepers!

How are you feeling? (Cravings/Symptoms): pretty good. Headaches are a bit rough. Hunger, and growing boobs and belly. Also veiny now.

Rants/Raves: I'm getting my first prenatal massage tomorrow and I am so excited!!

    Questions: none

GTKY: If work and proximity to family/friends weren’t a factor would you rather live: beach (ocean), lake, mountains, or other if I’ve missed a major category. Lake all the way.

@lex1111 I’m sleeping on a side - either left or right. I’m a back sleeper but got a pregnancy pillow a while back and has been helping a lot. I’m not showing too much yet but it helps to have something to wrap my legs around when I’m on my side. I’m a back sleep and my OB wanted me to switch at 16 weeks 😒
  • @lex1111 I also alternate sides. I have trouble sticking to one postion all night, I'm a restless sleeper.
