Re: QUESTION Thread

  • This may be an odd question, but do animals sense you are pregnant?

We're pet sitting my brother's dog for a few days at my house.   We've watched her before before I was pregnant and she did her own thing, but time she is constantly at my side, setting her head in my lap, or follows me around the house.

@allison_smith_6212 they absolutely do! One of my dogs shakes when she’s around me. So much so I may put her on anxiety medicine. The other dog loves anyone who’s pregnant, which is funny bc otherwise he is very picky on who he likes.

  • @allison_smith_6212 absolutely! One of our cats got very protective of me with my first pregnancy. She’s a very friendly cat but started being on edge and a bit aggressive with any male friends who came to our house. And she would come lie down next to me whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, just long enough until I was almost back to sleep and then she’d go do her own thing again, it was cute.
  • ale9687  CapricaAndrea  glad to see it's not just in my head and that it's a real thing. She's still in puppy tendencies and would jump up on people, which she still does it to others but won't jump up on me.

  • @allison_smith_6212 My animals for sure know. Our dog constantly sits on my left side with his head in my lap, which we just learned that Spawn is on the left side. And I have one momma cat who refuses to leave my side and is always around me while our two male cats want to have NOTHING to do with me. To the point where they nip me (gently!!) when I try to pet them.
  • @allison_smith_6212 with a couple of my pregnancies, I have taken the test based on the way my one cat lays on me.  He will not leave me be when pregnant, yet he hates my children, lol.

my dog doesn’t show any signs that she knows, but she stayed with my parents when I had dd, and when they brought her home to visit, she ran over to me, then ran smelling the entire house, clearly looking for her, showing she knew there was going to be a baby.
  • @allison_smith_6212

I was wondering the same thing, and I'm pretty sure they do! I've noticed my dog has been less jumpy with me lately, and he's also been SUPER protective--even putting himself between me and my husband a few times (we're working on that). There was even one time where I took an hour and a half long nap, and he sat on the ground next to the couch where I was sleeping, full guard mode, only moving to do a "perimeter patrol," as my husband described it. Dogs are amazing.
  • Ya'll because of the weather and of course hormones I've had a migraine with neck pain for the past week. My question is any suggested to help relieve the pain?? I'm already struggling with MS which is not helping. Also I'm not suppose to take any medicine since my liver enzymes were off 6 weeks ago (before I knew I was pregnant) at my yearly physical so I have to get them retested and she doesn't want medicine to mess with the results.
  • @peachie89 I am sorry, that’s tough without medication.  The best things that help me with a migraine, besides a prescription is an ice pack and peppermint oil, which I am not sure if that is safe or not.  Also, I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter, I got them all the time, and before I got fioricet from my doctor, the best thing I found was going to Burger King and getting fries and a coke.   It didn’t make it go away, but the salt, grease, caffeine combination did help.
  • @holly321 before my son I got migraines at least 2 days a week and was on migraine meds and had to switch to fioricet for my 1st trimester with him but thankfully they went away. I just started getting them again in February but since we were TTC I avoided meds as much as possible. I've tried all my normal tricks so maybe I just need to sleep.
  • There is a mom2mom sale in my neighborhood tomorrow and I'm planning on going. I've never been to one before and will be a FTM. Is there anything you recommend NOT purchasing second hand?
  • @Peachie89 @holly321 I second the peppermint oil! it's considered safe during the first & second trimester as long as it's diluted with another oil like fractionated coconut oil, and should only be used topically or for aromatherapy. It should be avoided in the 3rd trimester though as peppermint can interfere with milk supply.
  • @mrszoobear Aside from the obvious things that go in baby’s mouth (bottles, etc), I would not get a car seat second hand.  You don’t want to guess on the accident history or expiration date of those things.

  • @mrszoobear I would also steer clear of rock n plays, they’ve been recalled but hopefully nobody will be trying to sell theirs
  • Thanks ladies! That helps alot.
  • Not sure if this is the best thread for this but did anyone go to their initial appointment and not hear the heartbeat with the doppeler? I haven't had an ultrasound yet but finally went for my first appointment yesterday (which was 10 weeks/5 days) and he thought he might have heard it for a second but then couldn't find it. I'm naturally trying not to panic. :disappointed:
  • @doctorcrime I have never had the doctor try that early.  I think it is pretty normal to not have a heartbeat detectable that early.

i had at ultrasound at 7w2d and my doctor said to come back in 4 weeks and said to not do any earlier than that since he didn’t want us to have to deal with the possibility of not hearing the heartbeat.
  • @doctorcrime what did your dr say about it? I know around 10 weeks is when most doctors will try and locate the heartbeat with Doppler vs Ultrasound. Hang in there!
  • Ok weird question, but does anyone else not “feel” pregnant? We saw the embryo at 7 weeks, and at almost 10 I’m still having all of the symptoms (nausea, food aversion, exhaustion, sore boobs).

But my friends and partner keep asking me if I “feel different” in my body...and the answer is no! I’m a FTM so maybe part of it is that I just have no idea what I’m in for 😬...but for the most part I’m just going about my days, dealing with my first trimester symptoms, and occasionally like reading an online review for breastfeeding pillows. I don’t feel really feel different. 🤷‍♀️

    Anyone else feeling this way?
  • @midgerose86 With my first pregnancy, I didn't really "feel pregnant" until my bump started showing more, around 12-13 weeks.  With this pregnancy (5th, but only 2nd to make it this far) I'm feeling all the aches and pains much earlier and the bloated feeling is unreal, but the majority of the time I can "forget" that I'm pregnant for a bit. Everyone experience pregnancy a bit differently, so there's no wrong or right way to feel. :)

The nurse said going into it that the doc is usually good at finding it but cant always and if he doesn't it isn't that big of a deal since it is early. The doc said he thought he heard it for a second but couldn't find it. He didn't seem super concerned or want to rush an ultrasound or anything. I'm probably over-stressing. :\
  • @doctorcrime - You are past 10 weeks and your doctor hasn't ordered any ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and identify the due date? That seems so odd to me. I've never heard of that. Do you mind me asking what country or region you live in?

@midgerose86 for my first I had an easy pregnancy up until gestational diabetes. But in the beginning I didn’t “feel” pregnant. I had sore boobs but that’s it. I didn’t start feeling pregnant until I started showing in the 15-20 weeks marks.

  • @doctorcrime it could be nothing but I would be put off by the fact that he thought he couldn’t find it yet didn’t do an ultrasound. Keep us updated, I’ll  be thinking of you.

He said they don't do ultrasounds at his office and gave me paperwork to get one somewhere else. He said that was procedure and to schedule it between 11-14 weeks. I have one scheduled for the 23rd. And I live in the US. He acted like this was all normal procedure for him. He wouldn't even see me for my first visit until after 10 weeks.
  • @doctorcrime @mrszoobear my midwife doesn’t do first appointments until 10-11 weeks (pending when you can get in). She also doesn’t do u/s in house and the first is done until the same time frame. The only reason I’ve had one already is because my ER did one to ensure vitality after my IVF. With my daughter my first wasn’t until 14weeks. My first midwife appointment is in 2 weeks, if she wants to do another I’m going to talk to her about possibly declining it because I’d rather have as few as possible.

Theres birthing centers in the US that still don’t do any u/s.

@doctorcrime & @ashorkey - I orginally scheduled an appointment with a midwife who wanted to wait for the 1st apt at 10 weeks. I was lucky that I was already being seen for my PCOS and endo by a specialist. When they found out I was pregnant they switched gears and did my blood work and ultrasound.

Here is why I have a problem with doctors and midwives who want you to wait until then. The specialist knew my history with PCOS and that I was a high risk for miscarriage so she put me on progesterone right away. My blood work showed I developed hypothyroidism right away with this pregnancy so they put my on a thyroid pill. If your thyroid is underactive you can also miscarry. This was all done around 5 weeks pregnant.

The specialist then recommended me to a OB practice down the hall from them. They are great and got me in for my first visit at 7 weeks. They found out the prenatal vitamin I was taking didn't have enough iron and prescribed me one. The blood work showed high sugar levels and I had to do a 2 hour test. Thankfully I dont have gestational diabetes (yet) but I'm glad they checked.

If I had just waited for my midwife apt at 10 weeks, I could have already miscarried my baby. A 10 week first check up is "fine" for a normal pregnancy. But how do they know your pregnancy is normal if they wait that long before running any tests?
  • For those of you doing NIPT/cell free testing are you still getting a 12 week u/s and NT? Turns out my practice is a one or the other recommendation. If you start with NT and something comes back as an indicator the genetics lab/counselor will discuss options i.e. NIPT or other screening being necessary. I like the NIPT screens for more things, but was shamelessly hoping to see baby again before the 20 week anatomy scan.

@anniemarie887 for me they do both, I was told the results were more accurate vs doing one or the other alone.
  • @anniemarie887 my office does both. Could you ask your doctor to do the NT scan for your peace of mind? My practice is fairly small and they’ll do extra scans if asked.
  • @k_mama91 @anniemarie887 I've had the same thing and it makes me so nervous,  but I guess as long as nothing feels too extremely painful or any super bad bleeding, I assume it's ok? I hate waiting for the appointments....ugh. I also haven't had any real MS...just super tired and randomly hungry/naseous...
  • @anniemarie887 they scheduled both for me in advance without an option. I highly recommend the NIPT if it’s something you want to do. Felt like the wait was forever to get results (only 8 days) but so much relief when I got them back. Also, if you want to know the gender, it’s really nice to know so soon. However, even though I have those results back this week, I still want to see and hear the heartbeat for piece of mind at the 12 week scan. If you want both, I would try asking if they will do both for you. Worth a shot.
  • @anniemarie887 My OB's practice does both if you want them.  The NIPT picks up things that the NT scan doesn't at 12 weeks, and the u/s can detect a neural tube disorder like Spina Bifida, which isn't detected in the NIPT.  Plus it's always nice to see baby!
  • @spartanrd4 @k_mama91 @moonriver_and_me @bakerstreetboys it's so interesting how different it is. you would think there would be like a SOP to follow. I go 5/25 for NIPT and will ask some other questions. I spoke directly with the genetic counselor who is wonderful, the front desk staff I could do without, so I would rather just wait and ask her directly when I'm there next week.
  • @ktmaesim yep, as long as its not super bad or bleeding my OB says normal. when is your next appointment? I feel like you and I were similar, so it should be soon-ish!
  • This never really occurred to me with previous pregnancies, but are you making any changes to the sunscreen that you use?  I saw the blurb from The Bump about pregnancy safe sunscreens, and now I'm feeling anxious about it.
  • @nerdmom0013 we switched brands to be healthier a few years ago.  Most sunscreens burned DS, which led me to doing research and discovering how awful sunscreen can be for you.

I wasn’t sure if what we used was safe for pregnancy, but I think so.  So, thanks for asking!  Ours seems to be (we use neutrogena free and pure)
I haven’t been pregnant in so long and I forgot all the stuff that can be an issue (like face wash). I think I need to suck it up and read a book.

I made a switch for foundation this pregnancy- I was using this Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation with high rated sunscreen (I’m really fair) and when I looked up the toxicity level of the product, it got a 7 out of 10- yikes!!!  I’ve switched to Mineral Fusion brand (which I love for mascara already) and it’s been great.  Check this site out for product safety ratings- super cool!  Https://www.ewg.org (EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.
  • Yesterday was a breaking point for me. I just kept thinking, ‘I can’t take it anymore.’ I took some B6 hoping it would help with the nausea. Anyone have success with that?
  • @lioness_389, I had some luck with B6.  I ended up getting a prescription for Zofran, which is a god send.  If you are super miserable, ask your OB about it.
