NT/NIPT Dicussion Thread

Re: NT/NIPT Dicussion Thread

  • It’s interesting hearing everyone’s opinion and reasoning behind their testing choice. I did a quad screen last time bc my OB only does the others if you’re over 35 or have other high risks which I didn’t. I have a new OB this time and with twins I’m curious to see if she will offer it. I’m in the camp of I want to know so if it’s offered I will be getting it.
  • Do we discuss results here or a separate thread should be made?
  • Loading the player...
  • @luckystar28 I think you can just post results here. Do you mean like the medical results or just the gender results? Hey I’m really excited you got your results today, selfishly because maybe that means I’ll get mine by Thursday or Friday!!
  • I think we should do a new thread for the results but I'm down for whatever.
  • My ins doesn’t cover it. My OB thought they did but I wanted to check and it’s a good thing I did! I knew they wouldn’t since I work for a catholic company 🙄 The genetic company said that they offer a $299 rate when your ins doesn’t cover it but that’s not something we can afford right now (we just got an unexpected $400 bill for something), so we passed on doing it.
  • Bahh! I had my blood drawn last Thursday for our NIPT test and I'm anxiously awaiting our results. Yesterday was probably the earliest we could have expected to hear anything. I was hopeful because @luckystar28 got her's so quickly! I'm not sure we are going to hear anything until next week.
  • Do we even have a general thread for it yet?

I am getting my NIPT done next wed I think.
  • I had NIPT (Panorama) done Monday and was wondering if results would be discussed here. I’m fine however people want to set it up, but @marijaa333 I agree that a separate thread to discuss “concerning results” would be helpful. Having already been referred to MFM given preliminary NT concerns I’m pretty nervous about the results and my scan next Tuesday.
  • My NT scan is next Tuesday! Hoping baby looks just fine...NIPT came back looking good so let’s see...
  • Also, I didn’t make a separate thread to discuss results. I didn’t know the best way to go about it.
  • I thought we were going to do a separate thread for results. I can start it =) I was just complaining here about my lack of results. But I'm a big complainer today
  •  It feels like my NIPT will never come. It’s all December 5th. I really want this test in the rear view so I can relax
  • Mine is the same day. I really wish it were over with too. I never did any of the testing with my first two but it seems like a better idea to this time around.
  • @ncm1919 and @messymyranda I know! I actually already had my blood draw for it so I'm waiting for the stinking results! It's both nerve-racking because of the genetic test results, but I'm also excited to find out gender. Here's to hoping time goes faster!
  • I had my blood drawn for the Panorama (NIPT) on Friday... am now impatiently awaiting results!
  • At how many weeks is everyone having theirs drawn? I’ve read that sometimes even in week ten it might come back as not enough fetal dna to run. I’m 10+2 today and wondering if I should wait until after the holiday.

  • @meatballs37 I am having mine done wed and will be 10w3d. I have heard that 10 weeks may not be enough for some people that its good enough for a majority of poeple.

@meatballs37 - I had mine done at 10+6. My office recommends waiting until week 11 usually, but since I was already in the office for an appointment, I figured one day wouldn't make a difference and I'd rather save myself the extra trip.
  • I’m having mine drawn tomorrow, when I will be 11+6. My doctor said it was okay to do as early as 10+1, but I read so many studies that said plus size moms should wait until after 11 weeks, as the fetal fraction may not reach the minimum before that. That’s not to scare anyone..there were plenty of plus size moms whose results came back just fine at 10ish weeks..I just wanted to be extra safe.

Okay so let me ask this...and i'm really sorry if this is a dumb question. But my husband and I had Natera test done with my last pregnancy (2015). I came back as a positive for 1 genetic abnormality out of the 200+ they test for. So they wanted to test him. His tests came back and he has no genetic abnormalities in all that they tested for.

So my question is, if all they are testing is my blood and my husbands blood and calculating risk to the fetus based on that, isn't it safe to assume that once you have the test once, you don't need it again? My genes didn't change in the 2.5/3 yrs since I had this test last. Yes, the test could be more advanced and test for more things...but is there something else I'm missing?

The last time I did it, insurance covered mine, but not my husband's labs and we got a bill for $6K+ which ultimately got cleared and we didn't have to pay. But let me tell you, the stress of getting a bill like that (totally unexpected) in the mail is NOT something I ever want to go through again. While it would be nice to know gender in advance of the anatomy scan, I can certainly wait on that (albeit impatiently).

Someone please educate me! I have my appointment tomorrow and doc said we would do blood draw then. I don't want to do it if it's just going to give me stress about unknown medical bills and not provide any real answers.

(edited because I pulled my records...turns out we were billed $6K+ not $3K as originally stated)
  • @VGN0929, it sounds like you had the carrier screening done (currently waiting on my results now, since I’ve never had it done before). That’s a separate test that evaluates potential genetic issues based on your DNA. The NIPT picks up free floating fetal DNA that is specific to the baby you are carrying to look for potential genetic or chromosomal issues, again, specific to the baby you are carrying (hence the need to run it each time). Two separate tests. So, they would be u likely to run your carrier screening again, but the NIPT is relevant to each pregnancy.

  • @meatballs37 I’m going to be 12+4, mine is the MaterniT test and my dr said in between 10w5d and 13w4d, and with the holiday that’s just what worked out. I figured it would be better to be on the further along side than the maybe not far enough along, but we’ll see

I made my appointment for tomorrow at 10+3. Now I’m wondering if I should wait until next week. Mine is run by progenity. The rep today said 10 weeks was fine, but I don’t want to end up paying twice.

  • @KissMeImScottish Thank you that's very helpful! I'm guessing that they just bundled it all in one (doing both carrier and NIPT because we did find out gender from this) and the only thing I "remember" from it was the carrier part. I called my doc and of course he's not in right now and won't be able to get back to me before tomorrow's 8am appointment. But at least now I can call my insurance and ask specifically about the NIPT and whether that would be covered.

Appreciate your breaking it down for me!
  • @meatballs37 I’m pretty sure when I was looking at other BMB threads on this topic, multiple women said when they had to redo the test for inconclusive results they didn’t have to pay for a second test. Probably worth checking to see what your insurance would do.
  • I did my bloodwork this morning for NIPT (Harmony) so I’ll be anxiously waiting for the two weeks my doc said it will take to get results. It is covered by Kaiser, but I had to give up the NT scan to get it. They will only do either or.
  • I met with a genetics counselor at my dr's office and she said that they can test at 10 weeks but 10.5 weeks+ is ideal so we did mine at 10weeks, 4days (which was last Monday) and got my results today!  I was nervous that the upcoming holiday would delay things but it didn't, fortunately.  All looked good but we had them send a secure email with the gender that I'm trying my best not to open so we can do the gender reveal with the whole family later this week!  (happy thoughts for will power!)
  • I had the NT Scan at the hospital with my first pregnancy and I was billed $180 for it, my insurance only covers a portion. We are having one scheduled in December for this pregnancy. I am under 35, but my dr requires it because my husband has a first cousin with downs syndrome and we both have an uncle with birth defects. It will be a bonus if we can see gender but we couldn't with my daughter so I am not overly optimistic....I know we will probably have to wait for our scan at around 16-18 weeks.
  • That’s awesome! You have way more willpower than me! I took my test (Panorama) last Tuesday so I’m hoping my results come soon too. My doctor’s office made it seem like it was very rare to get a result before two weeks time but I think that’s just so moms aren’t calling them incessantly looking for results 😂.

Does anyone know if Natera posts anything on their portal when the results are sent to the doctor? When I logged in, i was expecting some type of tracker (even Dominos pizza has one, Natera!) but I didn’t see anything even remotely close to being that helpful lol.
  • DH and I went in on Saturday for a NT and the tech kept saying “wow your baby is tiny! Your baby is so small!” And as a ftm it freaked me out (DH is a worrier so he was stressed too). They couldn’t do the test at 11+1 apparently and the tech made us feel terrible. I just had to remind him that our last OB visit (the day before), the doc said we were good, showed us where their heartbeat was and how everything was growing. The tech upset us a lot though.
  • @battleangel omg thats awful. The tech at my ultrasound seemed annoyed because the baby wasnt laying in the right position plus my bladder was too full. Had to pee 4 times before things seemed to work. Next time I am not drinking close to the amount of water they say!
  • @canuckbaby oooh me too. I was not pleased with that.
  • @battleangel by the last time i couldnt really even go anymore. That was awful experience.
  • @meatballs37, I had my NIPT (MaterniT21 genome) done at 10+2 on 11/9 because I was eager to have results by thanksgiving! No issues with fetal DNA fraction and they were able to give me my results just 10 days later! I did call the company directly to make sure they had my blood sample and ask about processing time, which I think helped. And I reminded my OB at my appt this past Friday that results would be ready over the weekend. Since the company that runs my particular NIPT doesn’t have a direct patient portal, I took that extra step of reminding my OB to send me a message with results. Hope that helps!
  • NT scan scheduled for Dec 20. I have a prenatal appt and bloodwork panels that week so I will be a busy girl
  • Just had my Harmony labs drawn this evening. One nice thing that my OB told me is that Harmony only bills you if they get results. So if you go and get a low fetal fraction result, you don’t have to pay for a redraw (nor do you have to pay for the second draw if it comes up with the same result).
  • I had my blood drawn today for the Panorama test. Now comes the wait. I’m hoping the Thanksgiving holiday doesn’t delay it too long!
  • I thought a results thread was around, but somehow I can’t find it and some have been posted here, so I’ll do a quick update, hope that is OK. Includes *TW*, so put in a spoiler.

I’m not going to get into details, but the combination of my NIPT (Panorama) and NT scan are bad, really bad. We did CVS for some confirmations, but unlikely to change the results and hard decisions will be faced. I hear all of the “wouldn’t change my decision” comments, but it’s a bit unfair because you really don’t know until you are faced with them. I like to think I won’t be judged for my decisions.

I know there was talk of having a “concerning results” thread, so if anyone wants that I’m happy to partake, but I’m also happy to respond to a PM if anyone ends up having worries/concerning results and just wants to talk off the main threads. So many of you will pass this stage worry free, I’m thinking positive thoughts for you all.

  • @mackorori - I don't have the right words (because there are no right words), but I'm so sorry to hear about your results. My thoughts are with you.
