So I've been thinking about this three hour test all day and the impending dread is mounting. I have done a three hour test once before and had to stop because I felt so sick. My SIL is an OB and she says if I don't think I can make it through the test, I can monitor my blood sugar as if I have GD for while to see what my readings are like. That sounds like a much less unpleasant option to me. I also think I would learn more from seeing how my blood sugar reacts to the foods I normally eat and the way I normally move than seeing how my body processes 100g of pure glucose when I sit in a room for three hours. Am I crazy to consider asking to self-monitor for a while instead of doing the test?
@kadeephd I dont think it hurts to ask but I worry that if your diet were different while you're monitoring the glucose which could false affect the numbers. Good luck whichever way you end up deciding!
@kadeephd it doesn’t hurt to ask about that option! Also, this time around with the 3 hr test, I somehow didn’t feel as awful as I remember feeling the first time I did it. Maybe you might have a similar experience? I’m sorry this is so dreadful and stressful. I was putting mine off for a week or two, and ultimately it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared.
@katzalia That is good to hear. If I go, hopefully I have the same experience.
@hannelorre I have always had issues with low blood sugar (my sugar spikes and then drops too far) when I eat too many unrefined carbs, so I am normally pretty careful about balancing my meals so I don't feel sick. That's part of the reason I was a bit shocked I failed the first test. I actually had a fasting glucose reading done at 18 weeks when I had my life insurance exam done and that was 60, which is low. I know GD can kick in later and get worse throughout your pregnancy, but I just didn't expect it since I've always had the low blood sugar thing. Anyway, I would try to eat as normally as possible, though of course it's possible I'd want to change things if I realized they were making my blood sugar spike. That is the idea, though, right? I could keep monitoring if my dr says I need to, or if I felt like I didn't have a good handle on it. I could also monitor intermittently the rest of my pregnancy even if I get the go-ahead to stop just to make sure things are still in check.
I wish I had gotten to talk to my dr about the results rather than just
the person who answered the phone in the office. She said my results
were abnormal and I was in shock and didn't think to ask any questions (though I did call back twice to ask for the specific number and about how the test would be billed lol).
My appointment is scheduled for the first thing in the morning on
Monday when the office opens so I will have to reschedule if I decide I
want to discuss the monitoring possibility with a doctor. I can always reschedule for Tuesday if I talk to the dr and we decide the test is the way to go.
@kadeephd interesting chart...I scored 206 on the one hour and was told that anything over 200 is an automatic GD diagnosis, so the fact that only 85% of people who score 201-228 (or whatever, it's back on page 2 lol) are GD is weird to me. Anyways, good luck with your testing!
@cecilb93 I actually read a journal article about automatically diagnosing women above a certain cutoff with GD and they recommended against it since some women will pass the three hour even with a very high one hour reading. On the other hand, I also read a journal article that suggested women who fail the one hour test would benefit from following GD recommendations even if they pass the three hour. This is how I spend Friday nights now.
@kadeephd I've been very bad about sweets and carbs during the second trimester so I'm using it as an incentive to start eating better and maybe walking/exercising more. I think if you just wanted to follow GD recommendations regarding diet with frequent blood checks (though I dont know what's recommended? Just fasting? 4 times a day with before and after meal checks?), I imagine your doctor would be fine, but it may be more work for you in the end if you really didnt have GD.
@katy0990 I'm thinking about that too. I'm having anxiety about the test (part of the reason I am up at 4am) and would love to avoid having to do it if I could though!
@kadeephd hmm interesting. I was pretty pissed to not even get to do a three hour test, but I would have failed it anyways, so it's really moot point in my case lol
@kadeephd if you’re really worried about it, I would try to talk to your doctor first vs just doing the test, especially if you have the flexibility to do it Tuesday if that’s what you decide to do.
AFM, I got the results back this morning & passed the 3 hr! So relieved I’m not going to have even more dietary restrictions on top of all the allergy stuff.
