I basically didn't care about new music as a kid because we didn't have MTV or anything and my parents would always play The Beatles, Queen, The Doors etc which I liked. Once I did start developing my own taste in music though, it probably started with this classic:
High. Fuckin'. Art. Right there.

You can tell by this that I'm o-l-d and also I got it in elementary school! I was in love with this movie which seriously was not age appropriate for a third grader but that's my mom for ya
I never had my own tapes. I made them from the radio. My mom had Columbia House(secretly). I stole her Bon Jovi and Def Leppard tapes. I was at the mercy of whatever everyone else had.
Neighbor girls had Tiffany and Belina Carlile.
“My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage." - Aunt Frances”
Oops! I just re-read this and noticed it was tape, not CD. I have nooooooo idea about tape. I do remember a super awesome Chipmunks-does-oldies goodie that I used to play over and over and over again though...
Oh lord, I don’t know, but I used to carry around my CD case and my Walkman on the school bus in junior high, where I only toted the classic albums of the day: Brittney’s Oops album, Christina Aguilera, BSB Millenium, *NSYNC No strings attached, 50 Cent’s get rich or die tryin’, Eminem’s the Eminem Show, Jewel, and Now 5-7.
I definitely thought Mariah Carey too but now that Aqua was on mentioned I know Santa brought that in my stocking and cant remember which was first. Dr jones, jones, calling dr jones..
My dad is a music junkie and I swear he made me mix tapes when I was less than a year old. My mom is an artist and always played music, esp classical. (This might explain why I am a music teacher!!) My first tape would techically Paul Simon’s Graceland. It came out the year I was born. Still have vivid musical memories of this music! the first CD I made the choice to buy would be Nicki French... Total Eclipse of the Heart. Ohhh yeah!
The earliest tape I remember having was of Disney songs. This was back in elementary school. I'd spin in circles with a long ribbon in the living room, singing loudly to all of the songs over and over. Except for Candle on the Water. I hated that song. I had a very discerning taste, obviously.
Oh man - I was so not with pop culture as a child, my first tape I bought was The Monkees! (I'm still terrible with pop culture so that didn't change.)
I did not have great access to pop culture as a kid, we were a tv-less household. But I loved my brother's CD collection. He's 8 years older than me. I distinctly remember The Smashing Pumpkins, The Verve, Blink 182, Chumbawamba... I idolized my brother.
