Advanced Maternal Age

Re: Advanced Maternal Age

  • Excited to see a lot of AMA mamas! I'll be 39 when this new baby is here
  • Loading the player...
  • @twinietwin Maternal Fetal Medicine...basically a high risk OB. There is also def nuance I’m missing, but for the sake of readability...
  • @Lyse01 Thanks. I asked When I made my appointment if I need a specialist and they told me I wasn't old and I'd be fine. I guess we'll see Tuesday at my appoitment.
  • Question about AMA - I asked my fertility doc if I needed to see an OB that specializes in high-risk pregnancy, and she said no.....even though I'll be 39 soon! So I have an appointment with a midwife; I hope she doesn't then refer me to someone else because I'm AMA. Anyone have any insight on this?
  • @twinietwin I'm being referred to maternal fetal medicine because my age plus my past history. I eclampsia and fetal growth restriction with my first so had to be seen by them and my OB. Double appointments. With the last three kids I avoided it but I wasn't completely free of my high risk status. This time around they just want to play it safe.

  • @twinietwin I'm just now seeing your post after I asked a similar question! I have my apt on Friday so I'll let you know if they make me switch bc of my age (although I imagine all docs are different)
  • 34 and will be a few weeks from 35 at EDD.  Happy to have a healthy, no morning sickness, and happy 1ST pregnancy so far at 8w!  :)

@LeslieCHNC did they advise you to take a baby aspirin beginning at 10 weeks?  I met with my mid-wife on Tuesday and she said that new guidelines based on my past history, pregnancy induced high BP and IUGR with DS1, recommend it.  Even though I had no issues whatsoever with DS2.

Curious if others with somewhat similar “issues” are being recommended that same.

ETA - I wasn’t referred to MFM but she did say I needed to go to their office for my anatomy scan.

  • @tumblefluff yes. After My DD was born I was told that I would need to take a baby aspirin when I fell pregnant again. I started taking them the moment I found out with the last three kids and this one as well. With baby#4 I switched to a new ob-gyn because we had moved and before we could really get into the appointment they wanted to make sure I was taking it.They also had to reach out to MFM near the end for advice. I'm sure they are just taking precautions this time around because my BP has always started to yo yo around week 35 with the last 3 pregnancies. So I think they just want some extra eyes on me this time around so they don't have to scramble to to get second opinions.
  • First pregnancy at 38! My doctor told me I’m as healthy as a horse (her words) so so far no need for specialists. I’ve also opted to not get the Nucal screening and am seeking validation on that.....
  • @suchagoodone what’s your rationale for not getting a nuchal screening?
  • @lyse01 I guess I’m not opposed to the ultrasound but I got scared off the possible amniocentesis by the attached risk of miscarriage.
  • @suchagoodone my ob considers those separate procedures - I’ve consented to the nuchal ultrasound screening, but not the amnio (yet). If there’s something concerning on the u/s, I guess I’ll make the amnio decision when I get to it.

You might want to read through the material they gave you again and make sure you understood it. I think it’s pretty common to have them separate.
  • @suchagoodone These are not bundled procedures. If the ultrasound is abnormal, you can make the right decision for YOU about an amnio. I looked at it like I would like to be armed with as much info as possible so I could prepare for a special needs child.
  • @tumblefluff or anyone really, why do they advise you to take baby aspirin?
  • @twinietwin I think it’s to lower the risk of developing pre-E but in my case I never had it.  My blood pressure was just insanely high with DS1.  To the point where my OB told me I either drove to the hospital to get checked out ASAP or he was calling an ambulance.  I had DS1 2 weeks later and my BP resolved almost immediatrly.

  • @twinietwin studies have shown it can significantly reduce the occurrence of preeclampsia in those who have had a history with it or who have high blood pressure to begin with. I think it's also advised for those who have a history of clotting issues resulting in miscarriage.

  • Over the weekend I had some bleeding. I went to the er. They said there was blood between the sack and the placenta. They said I had to be on bed rest and no sex for a few weeks. I went to the Dr and she said I didn't need to be on bed rest and once the blood is gone there's no need to refrain from sex. A second ultrasound shows there isn't any more blood and the heart beat is strong. So thankful but confused by the different advice.
  • I am in the old lady club as well  I am 39 and will be 40 when they baby is born.
  • @twinietwin I guess just do what feels right? Although I'd tend to take the advice of the OB over the ER, especially when it comes a few days later.

Had my first appt with an OB today at 11+2 and zero mention of my age (35), though I'm being referred to an MFM anyway for other high-risk factors. And hooray for healthy baby!
  • Welcome! I’m 40 and expecting my first one too!
  • Hi All!
i selected an AMA OB because of pevious issues and being 40. I have my first appointment this Thursday 😀!

this is our first kid and we’re so happy! I’m 9 weeks.
  • I’m 38, 39 at EDD!
this one will be my first!
  • Hi everyone! I'm 35 and will be 36 when baby is born. This will be my second. I kind of like that we're considered "geriatric" because I feel like we can be crankier and get away with it, lol.

@twinietwin I feel you on the contradicting advice. I was high risk with my DD because of a short cervix, and then later because I had low platelets, but basically every single doctor I talked to told me something different. It's so frustrating, but I just tried to listen to my body and base things off of how I was feeling.
  • Met with my OB for the first time today. I am technically AMA but all that will mean is weekly ultrasounds in the last month of pregnancy. Sounds good to me!

When when I first came to the bump I couldn’t understand why so many women were having babies “against medical advice.”

ETA- honestly, I would probably have a baby against medical advice too. Maybe I should have said I was curious about why so many mamas were advised to not have babies.

  • 36 y’all! And living in NYC - this will be my first
  • I'll be 35 in December.  My OB said my care doesn't change unless I will be 40 or over.  My NIPT also isn't covered.  I'm still getting it though.  She said it's a good idea

DS1 is 7.  DD is 1.  DS2 is coming in late April.
