GTKY - What are you reading?

It seems like we have a lot of readers in this group so let's talk about books! What are you reading? Any recommendations?

I'm currently reading book 2 of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy:  China Rich Girlfriend. I am loving it so far and LOVED Crazy Rich Asians; I can't wait for the movie!

Before these I read the Red Queen trilogy. They were good, but not earth shattering.

I started reading The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty, but I haven't gotten far enough into it to have an opinion. I'm reading "Writing Business Bids and Proposals for Dummies" for work.

I just finished My (Not So) Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella. One of her better books in a long time. I'm about to start Truly, Madly, Guilty by Liane Moriarty but it's off to a slow start.

Currently reading The Trilogy Knot by HR Conklin. Recently read Until Harry by LA Casey which was a great read!

I just finished Garlic and Sapphires by former NYT food critic Ruth Reichl. And now I am trying All the Light We Cannot See again. I made it 100 pages last time before giving up, but my husband and FIL both loved it so I am trying again.

btw, I LOVE this thread! Great idea @dtspmama

    @maggiemadeit Thanks!

Did you like Garlic and Sapphires?  I love books by people in the food industry.  Gail Simmons's Talking With My Mouth Full is one of my favorites, and I'm thinking about reading Padma Lakshmi's Love, Loss, and What We Ate when I finish this trilogy.

@dtspmama Yes! I am a huge foodie and home chef, so I really enjoyed it. It was light, which is exactly what I wanted. We have a lending library in our apartment building and I picked it up on a whim. I will have to check out these other titles, as I really enjoy foodie books!

@maggiemadeit I just read All the Light We Cannot See. It's definitely a slow read. If you couldn't keep on after the first 100 pages, it'll be a loooooong read for you. It really doesn't pick up until the last few chapters. But it's an interesting story.

I just finished Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and have started Dante's Divine Comedy but I haven't gotten past the introduction yet.
  • Options
@maggiemadeit me too!  A looooooong time ago (pre-kids) I had a cooking blog. I can't wait for them to get a little older so I can (hopefully) pick it up again.

(I should add it had NO following. The concept was awful and so were the pictures but it was FUN.)

@dtspmama I used to have a diy/cooking blog too. Then I started working a regular 9-5 (or rather 7-3) and didn't have enough time. Now we're lucky if we cook our hellofresh meals before they go bad.

I am currently reading the 7th book in the Outlander series. I have been working on the series for a few years now, so I haven’t had much time to read anything else!

@maggiemadeit I read All The Light We Cannot See a few years ago. It’s a slow read, but worth it!

I just finished I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (true crime). I need to read a few more before I go back to teaching. I have to limit my reading during be school year or I will put off my work to finish a book.

Hah! Wishing I had time to read. Right now I have just enough time to read the bump message boards during my three minutes in the restroom.  :D

@flyingmombula is The Terror the book they used as inspiration for the tv show?  I really liked the show!
  • Options
@dtspmama it is!! I read it after I saw a preview for the show. I really liked the book (although it has some slow spots— he gets very in to historical detail) but I haven’t been able to find the complete show on demand yet so I haven’t watched it.

Not SUPER exciting... but so far both are really interesting.

    Captivate: Vanessa Van Edwards

    Objections: Jen Blount

I’m a Remodel Consultant so just as much as I’m consulting and designing, I’m selling. Good reads for a little personal development on that tip. Captivate is actually really cool on understanding how to better read people. She really gets into the science of how we act and why. I think a really a good book for anyone to pick up.

    @sejica YES!!! Lol

Out of all of Jacks books, Goodnight Moon is one of my favorites to read him.

I recently read Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier for a book club. Highly recommended! But other than that, Little Blue Truck and The Napping House.  :D I just started Uncle Toms Cabin. Not sure if I’ll get through it. I have a bunch of books I start reading and then put down and never get back to.

My current reads are Star Wars: Dark Force Rising and What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

I'm working on Sea Hunters by Clive Cussler. He writes modern action/adventure/thriller novels, which I really like. This book, however, is not fiction. He started a nonprofit to find lost ships at sea (most of his novels revolve around the ocean and many of them with finding lost treasures/ships at sea), and so this book is all about the different ships they've found. It's pretty neat! I got it cheap at a library book sale.

My kindle has Girl, Wash Your Face up right now and I’m a few chapters into it - but I usually read before bed and that is no longer a possibility while pregnant. I’m out the minute my head hits the pillow.

Currently reading by invitation only by Dorothea Benton Frank but most days a nap is winning out over reading.

Currently re reading Anne of Ingleside As I wanted something light that I didn’t feel bad about putting down halfway in the middle of the book. Also just took out from the library the “no cry sleep solution” in the hopes of  some suggestions to fix my daughters horrible sleep habits  *fingers crossed*

Just finished up The Little Beach Street Bakery series by Jenny Colgan. They are light hearted and fun reads. Loving all the suggestions on this post! I should probably go pay my late library fine so I can check them out haha.

@mamaoftwomonkeys have you ever heard of the fb group “respectful sleep training”? It has a lot of resources on different types of sleep training and there are sleep training coaches as a part of the group as well. You may have already tried it all but if not it’s worth looking into

@mschanandlerbong1214 I'm also a YA junkie!! Currently on book 3 of the Throne of Glass series by Sarah Maas.

@purpleteacher82 I was listening to book 5 of the Outlander series on Audio but I haven't been driving much this summer so I feel like I have to restart it - - I want to though because I love the story and the other books!!

@mamaoftwomonkeys how old is DD? My son is two and a horrible sleeper but we’ve had some great success with the hatch baby wait to wake light. Also- are you a hokie?! I just saw your pic on the hobbies thread of Mcaffes knob.

Just finished Fire and Fury. It was a guilty pleasure and an easy read. I'm mostly a non-fiction fan but I like sci-fi too!

I keep hearing about people reading this. I need to read it still. I hear it’s really good.

We have two sleeping beauties in heaven.
Jack gained his wings on 09/02/2016.
Kali gained her wings on 07/28/2015.
They will be forever missed. <3

This is a great thread! I’m currently reading Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy and What to Expect When You’re Expecting — not very exciting stuff  :D Before getting KU I was reading a bunch of sales books for work: The Slight Edge, The Millionaire Next Door, and Think and Grow Rich (I got bored and stopped halfway through). I’m a bit disappointed in my reading habits and would like to read something other than informational books. I think I’m going to try Crazy Rich Asians next since several of you have mentioned it!

@hreed7289 I’m not a hokie but my dad was! Lots of extended family down in that area. DD is 21 months. We didn’t plan on it, but we were totally co sleepers. With the advent of this pregnancy we’re trying to transition her to her own bed. Currently have a mattress in our bedroom for her that we’ve had some limited success with. Thanks for the recommendation (and from @char245!) I’ll have to check them out
