How to use two middle names (one an initial)

Hi!

Our baby is due this week, but we just decided to use two middle names. One would be just an initial with a period after.  So we are hoping the name would look like this .. FIRST MIDDLE M. LAST

Does anyone know somebody with a name like this or have any advice? We're not looking to change our minds, the middle initial is after my dad who suddenly passed a week ago.

Thank you!!

  • That is really sad that your dad passed away so recently. I hope that you have many fun stories to tell you new child .
I have never seen any one use an initial like that, but I assume that it would be just as you have described. Michael Andrew J Fox...……..looks good to me!

  • I'm so sorry about your dad. It's a nice way to honour his memory. Just to clarify, the legal name will be both full names and you're going to shorten the second one to the initial in casual/everyday use?

Writing out one middle name and one initial might confuse some people if you use it often. Like John Henry M. Smith would suggest to me that "John Henry" is his double-barrelled first name and M. is his (only) middle initial. I would call him John Henry unless someone corrected me.

I have two middle names. I never really use either of them in everyday life because it's cumbersome and nobody really does that anyway. At my old job I listed both as initials on my business card. At my current job i have just first and last name, but both middles are written in full on my degrees and all my IDs. In any event, he'll eventually decide what he wants to do

  • Thanks for your input :) You make a good point that using the initial after the middle name makes it look like two first names. I didn't think of that!
Let me clarify. Were actually having a girl and the initial (that's after my dad) is his middle name... which is just "J." That's kinda why I thought it would work well because it's only a letter.
When I look at the name written out, the first and middle both start with "O" and it does not look like two first names.. it looks more like a normal name with a random letter stuck in there, haha.
  • Ah okay! I would still just use the whole name and joy the initial. The number of times you use your full name in everyday life is very low and the meaning behind it trumps anything else. Plus if anyone asks she'll be able to say she was named for her grandfather and hopefully have a great story about him to share!

  • Both of our girls have two middle names, and this baby will too. The second middle name for all three kids is the same as it is actually my mom’s maiden name, which I took as my middle name when I got married. We don’t use the second middle name in everyday life. It’s just on important documents and for use later for scholarship opportunities. All that to say I think it’s ok to use just the initial because you probably won’t use it everyday.
