Are growth scans normal after 20 weeks? I assumed after the 20 week anatomy scan that it’s not common to have any more ultrasounds (as long as all is well) but I was just thinking... how do doctors know that the baby isn’t breech?
FTM here and I have Kaiser insurance so I could very well also have one but my dr. hasn't mentioned this to me yet. I’ll ask at my next appointment but figured I’d ask here as well!
@belo290 usually you will have one more ultrasound around 37wks to check growth and positioning of baby. At least that's what they do here. They measure your belly now to make sure you are growing properly.
BFP 2/11/15 (EDD 10/13/15). MMC 3/30/15 D&C 4/3/15 "We will always love you"
DD1 - BFP 7/23/15 (EDD 3/31/16). "We believe in you rainbow" DOB 4/2/16
DD2 - BFP 2/9/18 (EDD 10/19/18). "Grow baby grow!" DOB 10/24/18
BFP 11/16/20 (EDD 7/31/21). "Round 3 FIGHT!"
@belo290 with my first, we did the anatomy scan at 20 weeks then we did one at 36 weeks to check his position. My last pregnancy ended up high risk at 34 weeks so I got weekly scans until I delivered at 37 weeks and this one is high risk from the start so I get monthly scans, then we’ll get weekly scans in the 3rd trimester.
My dr typically does not do another one after 20 weeks unless medically needed. However, he doesn't do any in house and sends me to a MFM for any ultrasounds.
@belo290 my OB does a growth scan around 32-34 weeks. He’ll do BPPs after that if necessary as well. I had those weekly with DD from 34 or 35 weeks until delivery.
@belo290 I'm getting a growth scan at 32 weeks at the MFM office because the MFM Dr who read my AS recommended one due to my hypothyroidism. I didn't think my OB would do anymore, but at my 23w checkup we popped into the US room and he tried to get a quick peek. So who knows!
My ob doesn't do then after the 20w usually. Because I have twins were doing growth scans every 4 weeks to make sure they're on track starting Tuesday and what position they look likely they'll be settling in so we have a rough game plan for delivery
I’m not getting another ultrasound and am a bit sad about it. I think I may go for an elective 4D around 30 weeks though just because I can. I really want a cute face pic to put on canvas or frame.
My doc doesn’t do anything after 20 weeks unless high risk. With a 10 year history of high blood pressure they will do “serial scans” for me which my doc said will most likely be every 4 weeks. Also, from what I gathered from my last MFM appt, if they see that your cervix is shortening they add in transvag ultrasounds for cervix checks as well.
@belo290 you can tell baby’s position from the way they feel if you know what you’re looking for, and have practice at it. The technique is called Leopold’s Maneuvers and most OBs/midwives/L&Dnurses are pretty skilled at it. The head and the bum feel different from each other, the bum is more solid with the rest of the body and the head is more mobile.
That said- I have literally had an ultrasound at every appointment so far because either the doctor couldn’t find the heartbeat on the doppler or all of the normal exam rooms were in use, so the appt was in the U/S room (while we’re here, why not?).
In other words- I don’t expect any more, but it could happen, maybe...
Thanks everyone! It sounds like it’s a little bit all over the place. I’ll ask at my next appointment but it would be nice surprise to see the little one again!
I feel like this is a really silly question... But when you go into labor (and your water hasn't broken) do you just know? Or does it take some time to realize?
Im probably just paranoid. I keep having moments of pain and discomfort in my pelvic. Sometimes it makes me want to cry (but I haven't yet). It eventually passes, especially if I relax. It's not something that happens for a few moments/minutes then passes, it's more of a constant pain for 30 min then gone.
@sammierose464 no idea, but doesn’t seem like a silly question to me. My dr last time said I’d know, but I’ve also heard that about your water breaking and had a friend that walked around for a couple days after her water broke and she didn’t realize that’s what it was. (I never went into labor last time - it was a planned c section).
We often joke at work that we know we’re going to be sending someone home if we ask them why they came in, and they say “I think I’m in labour”. If you aren’t convinced, it’s not labour. Contractions are intense and pretty hard to miss.
Contractions are intense and grow in intensity. Im sure that while there may be uncertainty at first, you’ll eventually figure it out. There are a lot of cases of water not breaking like the movies (gushing) so it does make me paranoid too to think of my water breaking with a slow leak.
Has anyone gotten a nerve nicked while getting blood work? During my GD draw the girl put the needle in and I got a hot electric shock down my arm, no blood was coming out so she corrected and got the vein. Yesterday I started getting nerve pain when I move my arm, feels like I’m being pinched from the inside. Any tips????
@sammierose464 trust me you’ll know. I had the same thoughts. I was like I have a high pain tolerance (hahaha) will I know. I knew from the first contraction that labor was coming.
@sammierose464 I had the smallest twinge lying in bed and I just KNEW. It jolted me up in a panic. Contractions came every 2 mins after that which was my signal that things were moving very quickly.
@sammierose464 I actually didn’t know with that being said, eventually I was like okay this is for realz. I think a good test my doctor told me was can you talk through the contraction, if it’s a no then it’s real labor and go time.
eta I was super uncomfortable and in pain for what felt like two weeks before I delivered. I just got steadily more and more uncomfortable until I couldn’t talk through the contractions anymore.
I’m not very patient. I’ve put all the things I think I need on my registry, but my shower isn’t until Sept 8 and I’m due Oct 3. My original plan before I knew my shower date was to just wait and see what I still needed after the shower before buying stuff. Can anyone with past experience share if there have been things people are unlikely to buy from the registry? Wondering if there are some things I should just buy in the meantime. We did get the furniture stuff on our own so everything on the registry is like less than $200. Car seat is the most expensive item I think we have on there, then probably baby monitor is second.
ETA: FTM so we are starting out with nothing besides some clothes someone handed down to us and some items from the amazon welcome box and similar freebies.

Most of the things on our registry were purchased (I will say we didn’t have many high priced items on there except for the high chair because I bought most of the gear secondhand throughout my pregnancy). I wouldn’t stress too much about the dates - DD was due 3/16, my shower was 3/1, and I ended up having to be induced on 3/4 (she was born 3/5). We just went and got the extra stuff that we needed right after our shower. I would advise that you go ahead and buy your car seat if you’re stressed about that because aside from diapers, some sleepers and onesies, a place for baby to sleep, and a way to feed baby, that’s all you really NEED at the very beginning.
When do you where them and for how long? My dr never said and I was planning on asking yesterday at my appointment but we had to reschedule.
I wore mine to bed the other night and apparently that's a no no. It definitely helped a lot but with no ac at work right now they're really uncomfortable to wear for me during the day.
I can’t keep mine on for more than a few hours, I am a size 6 shoe but my foot is wide and so I’m wondering if I needed to size up? I wore mine to bed and woke up in the middle of the night - I’m guessing I wasn’t supposed yo? But my plantar fasciitis was killing me!
@nmadjeski - I’ve only been wearing them when I am traveling and take them off when I get to my destination. (So for my road trip last week- about 8hrs?)
Also, the ones I’ve been wearing are open toed and only come a few inches above my calves. I think my ones that go to the knee would kill me with the heat right now!
I wore mine my last few shifts at work, but they are heavy duty prescription ones, with a high compression rating so you actually need special gloves to get them on. But if I didn’t I literally couldn’t get my feet in my nursing shoes (think leather clogs). Don’t wear them sleeping, you want your legs moving at least a bit with them on or you’re more prone to blood pooling and blood clots. Your best bet is to put them on in the morning before your feet get too puffy, and then peel them off if they’re getting to be to much.
Mine come up mid calf and I'm thinking I need higher ones, unfortunately. The worst of my vericose veins are right under my knee cap. @knottieamusements
@HoosOnFirst I wore mine to bed and honestly didn't even think anything of it because I had to wear them they entire time I was in the hospital being induced with DS, so almost 40 hours straight. I didn't think 8 hours (haha yeah right) was a bad thing but my mom told me it's not a good idea and dr Google kind of confirmed that. It was saying how wearing them to bed can cause circulation issues in your feet and ankles.
I'm just going to ask my OB when I see her next week.
The fella has some for golf, so I wore his when we went to Hawaii. His fave color is orange, so I definitely noticed that the blue ones were much tighter than the orange ones because his feet/legs are bigger than mine and he's stretched out the orange ones. My feet felt mostly fine on the long flights, but they started getting quite uncomfortable after 8+ hours and I couldn't wait to change socks once we got to the hotel.
I just ordered some new pairs for me since we have upcoming trips. I'll have a full day of travel a week from Monday (3 flights, one cross country), so I think I might try to change to normal socks when I'm on a layover and just wear the compression socks for the flying parts of the day.
@cagncool12 I had that happen to me last year. Mine was painful up my bicep to my shoulder and it took a few weeks for me to be able to use the arm without being in a lot of pain (mostly pain in my bicep when I lifted things). I talked to a different phlebotomist at my next blood draw and showed her the arm (it was so bruised they couldn’t have used it for the next draw if they wanted to) and she said that never should have happened (and made it sound like I could have gotten the lady that did it fired).
@rabtaido1214 From what I remember, all the big things were purchased for my shower. Most of it you won’t need at first anyway (except the car seat), so if you don’t get it at the shower, you have plenty of time to order it and get it before you need it.

This makes total sense. I imagine my body woke me to overnight on purpose to be like “take that thing off!”
@rabtaido1214 a lot of items got purchased off my registry and those that didn’t were little things. I would wait. I ended up returning a lot of items I registered for and buying a lot of items I didn’t register for in the first few months of babies life.
I know that someone posted a list of what baby clothes should be purchased for each stage but I have no idea which thread it was posted in. Anyone else remember?? FTM here and struggling with the list of what I should have to be prepared for when baby comes.

She says the baby doesn't have room to flip after then so the position is fairly set.
