Re: Pediatrician/Baby check up thread

  • How old is baby?
10 days today but had our first check up at 6 days.

    Height/weight/percentiles?
7lb 5oz, back to birth weight plus some, 19 in at birth.

    Questions for pediatrician?
Nothing right now. We had initially gone in to check his jaundice and all turned out well. I asked if I could let him sleep past the 3 hrs and she said yes since he was past his birth weight already.

    Other rants/raves?
He’s so much calmer than DS1! Although I’m still sleep deprived, LO seems to sleep longer at a much younger age which is nice. And yay to no colic or acid reflux like his big brother.

    How old is baby?
1 week today! Had our checkup at 5 days old

    Height/weight/percentiles?
7lb 9oz, 19.5in at birth. 7lb 14 oz at his ped appt Wednesday already above his birth weight!

    Questions for pediatrician?

    Other rants/raves?
I totally forgot our pediatrician is leaving this practice at the end of this month! Now we’ll be switching to a doctor we’ve never met before. She was such a great ped for our son, and I’m anxious to see how this new ped will be. I don’t want to be bouncing around from doctor to doctor if we don’t like them.

Also, this LO is 6 days old and officially just as refluxy as her brother. I was reeeeeaally hoping to not have catch puke after every feeding.

  • How old is baby?
    We are 16 days out.

    Height/weight/percentiles?
Born at 5 lb 4 oz saw the pedi at 1 week old and she was 5 lb 9 oz, saw odds again yesterday at 2 weeks old and we are at 6 lb 2 oz.

    Questions for pediatrician?
    None for now

  • @acunamatada could you move with your pediatrician? We stuck with ours when she switched offices because we loved her
  • We only had one appointment at 4 days old. Everything looked good and he was still at the same weight as when we left the hospital (6lbs, he dropped 4% from birth). I've used my scale at home and while I know it's not the same it looks like he is at least back at birth weight (6lbs 4oz). We go back to the doctor on Tuesday.
  • @KatyF0813 I wish! Her new practice is over an hour away in the middle of nowhere.
  • How old is baby?
Baby is 20 days old (3 weeks tomorrow!)

    Height/weight/percentiles?
He was born 6 lbs 6 oz, 18.8 inches long. After discharge he lost 15% of his birth weight- was like 5 lbs 2 oz or something crazy. Now he is about 7lbs, and 19 inches the doctor will see him again at his 1 month appointment on 7/23. So I’m not sure about percentiles etc.

    Questions for pediatrician?
How much he should be gaining by his 1 month check up.

    Other rants/raves?
    No
  • Had a follow up today with DD pedi and she has gained over a pound in 2 weeks. We are up to 7 lb 5 oz which puts her 7th percentile for weight, which is really good for her considering her birth weight was 5 pounds 4 oz. DD was diagnosed with very mild reflux, and myself with a milk imbalance. We are starting to stop mid feeding to burp and sitting upright for 30 minutes after a feeding to help with the vomiting. And for the imbalance we are trying block feeding with pumping on the opposite side. Very very hesitant to start pumping since we will be moving soon I am so afraid whatever stash i accumulate will not survive.
  • @kbernal2021 DS has some pretty bad reflux that he needed a prescription. Did they suggest wedging her bed so she’s at an incline?
  • Yes they suggested it and luckily her cosleeper came with a wedge that we can add under the mattress so I will be doing that. Hers isnt bad and the dr seems to think she will outgrow it the bigger she gets vs it getting worse. I am super glad to avoid meds though!
  • I have my one month appointment in a week. At the 2 week checkup LO was back to birth weight but the pediatrician says he wants to see significant weight gain at the one month because LO is at the bottom of the scale. I don't care much because he is eating and wetting a bunch of diapers, aside from the occasional spit up he has never vomited or had anything that seems to point to gas. Someone has to be at the bottom of the scale and still be healthy!!
  • @kissableviv bottom of the scale here and healthy! Lol DD was smaller than your son at birth and has gained over 2 pounds since birth and she will be one month on Friday. Shes 7th percentile for weight on the growth chart so I think the smaller babies just take longer to get up to the bigger percentiles lol
  • @kissableviv my pedi always says he does not care what percentile the baby is at, all he cares about is the growth curve. At every checkup with our son he’d enter the data for weight,
height, and head size, and graph the growth. Our first was always around 40-50% with a steady curve, but he said even if he was 10% or 90%, he’d still only care about the growth, not percentage.

We have 2 week check up on Friday. My LC said if he gains well at his check up she will help me lower my supply to try to help with some of the issues we are having. Fingers crossed because I can’t keep living with this constant pain.
  • kc1293kc1293 member
@kbernal2021 I would look into dry ice for your move.

Low percentile isn't a big deal as long as everyone said they are in their growth curve. My DD1 has always been below 10%, but maintains her growth curve. So no concern. I think her last appointment, 18 month, she was 8%. DD2 (LO) measured 14% at her 2 week appointment. All of my kids are tall and skinny.

  • How old is baby? 1 week today but we went to the pedi at 6 days old

    Height/weight/percentiles? height 20.8 inches (69th percentile); weight 6lbs 10.5 oz (20th percentile).

Questions for pediatrician? I asked about taking a vitamin d3 supplement rather than giving the drops to baby.  The LC at the hospital said she thought it would be fine but the AAP hasn’t taken an official stance on it yet so ask the pedi.  Pedi said “it doesn’t transfer that well to baby” so just give the drops.  I’ve pretty much forgotten to give the drops to all of my BF babies (oops) so I’ll try to remember to give them daily but I think I’m going to add a supplement to my prenatal to cover the gap.

Other rants/raves?  Rave: Sloane is basically back to birthweight at 6 days old (6lbs 11.6 oz at birth).  I’m so relieved because it was a struggle for DS to get there by 2 weeks old and he was only 6lbs 7oz at birth.  Rant: not really a rant but the only hiccup at the pedi visit was that her cord fell off at 5 days and she has an umbilical granuloma and they had to put silver nitrate on it.  Hopefully that heals soon.  I hate worrying about it healing properly.

  • @Sarafuss with DS we were never told to give vitamin D so it caught me off guard this time around. I bought the drops a week ago and just opened it up right that you reminded me. Pedi said i could do the drops or take extra supplements.
  • @kc1293 dry ice! Why did I not think of that!! Thank you!!
  • Our doc is on vacation so we don’t see him again until August so I put DD on the kitchen scale just to see if she’s gaining and she’s up 6oz from her birth weight!

How old is baby? One month today! I can't even believe it!

Height/weight/percentiles? I took him to the well baby clinic last week (when he was 3 weeks) and he was 8lb 6oz and 22in so up 11oz and 1 inch from his birth weight. He had lost 10 oz as well that he gained back so hopefully we are on track. We have our one month appointment with the ped on Friday.

Questions for pediatrician? I should probably write things down as I think of them.. the only thing I know I want to ask about now is about lip tie.

  • @MrsMiller8588 +1 about lip tie . I suspect he has it but it may not be that bad. I'm nursing pretty much pain free and he latches well and eats a lot but he is compressing my left nipple. I'm getting a second opinion with another LC to be sure, my doula/LC seems to think he doesn't have it. The hospital LCs see babies up to one month so I figured it can't hurt to go before we hit 4 weeks especially when it's $30.

@kissableviv the LC I saw says she cant diagnose lip ties and to talk to my ped. She did say she didn't think it was causing my pain. I went from no pain to painful feedings, but she thinks LO started having a learned shallow latch so I need to be diligent about making him open wide for a deep latch.

  • 19 days today. We had LO’s 2week checkup- she’s up 18% of her birthweight already!
7lb9oz at birth to 8lb15oz today... So crazy, my son gained pretty fast too. I think she’ll be porky like he was.
We don’t have to go back until 2 months.

I totally forgot about vitamin D supplements. I don’t think I had to give/take them with DS until winter time when there would be less sun exposure.
  • @MrsMiller8588 sounds like what my LO is doing too. He is also tiny and my boob is large in comparison! I'm not in pain but I feel like things could be better. I'll also ask the pediatrician next week, I'm just shocked that they wouldn't check for it at the hospital...

Re: vitamin D supplements I was not told about them, should I asked the pediatrician? We live in California so not sure they are needed?
  • @kissableviv it seems like it may vary by location or even by pedi.  I’ve been told to give them with all of my BF babies (my first was FF).   But I’ve always been terrible at remembering.  I’ve always had summer babies and we’ve been outside a lot and they’ve always been fine.  (I’m not sure what a baby deficient in Vitamin D would look like though).  So maybe ask but they don’t seem to be SUPER important.  I’m planning on taking a supplement myself and that’s probably it.  I’ve been deficient in Vitamin D in the past when they’ve done random blood work at my primary doc so it can’t hurt.

  • I asked our pediatrician about vitamin D with DD and he tested me and just told me to drink some milk or get outside. Like I said before though, he's very against supplements!
  • I think the official AAP recommendation is to give the vitamins D drops if breastfeeding, I believe for formula fed babies it already contains vitamin D. I feel like I remember reading or being told that vitamin D is really the only nutrient that doesn’t transfer in breast milk or isn’t found in breastmilk. I was pretty lax about it with my older son, we gave it but probably forgot more than we should have.
  • Question. How much is too much weight for LO to gain? He’s gained a pound and a half in 2 weeks.  He’s definitely not chubby but I feel like that’s a lot? the pediatrician didn’t say anything but I can’t help but think LO is eating too much. I have an oversupply so he has endless milk to consume.
  • @moguippy that’s about what my LO gained, her ped said it was great. My DS gained really quickly and was a chubby baby but thinned right out after he started becoming mobile.
  • @moguippy my DD is gaining at almost the same rate as your son and her pediatrition is thrilled about it! Honestly I am too because my son took over a month to get back to birth weight so this little girl gaining so much is awesome.

Can BF babies actually overeat?? I’ve never thought to ask that question lol I know they can get too much foremilk vs hindmilk but I don’t know about just overall overeating.. Anyone know??

  • I think it’s hard or impossible for a breastfed baby to overeat at the boob, but possible to overeat by bottle. Which is why paced feeding is important.
  • I think 1/2 lbs per week is the standard gain? So that doesn't seem too far off I guess! Per our house scale which is not as precise babe should be 7lbs 3oz now, so I'm hoping we are on track for a good weight gain! Considering he's always at the boob I expect no less lol
  • I have also heard that you can’t overfeed a breastfed baby. LO is like 90% breastfed for now. He may get a bottle or 2 of pumped milk a day depending on if I need a break or he decides he’s hungry again right after I pump. Plus I didn’t know if the nipple shield makes a difference bc it will fill up with milk on its own.  But glad to hear it’s not too much weight gain!  I should have asked the pediatrician but of course you think of all the things you want to ask when you leave lol.
  • @moguippy that’s how it works! Haha I do that with everything! I’m so glad my husband goes to all the kids appointments and my OB appointments because I’d leave without asking a single thing  :D My son used a nipple shield for 8 weeks and gained weight super slowly so I don’t think that has too much of an impact if there is one at all. I mean, I could be wrong but thats my experience lol

  • @moguippy DD gained right about that in 2 weeks as well and her pedi was very happy about it. DS was always 99% for weight and height in his first year and was a chunk until he became mobile, she was always thrilled with his weight gain as well.
  • DS was 7% at 5 days and 9% at 12 days. She didn’t tell me his percentile this time and of course forgot to ask lol. So definitely not a chunk but he doesn’t seem that small either?
  • We had our 2 week appt today and Evan is looking great. He grew one inch and is now 7lbs 1oz, exceeding his birth weight of 6lbs 4oz. Dr. said he’s breastfeeding like a champ so we were given the green light to introduce the pacifier which I’m happy about.
  • @zande2016 does your son take a pacifier?? I’ve been thinking about trying it with DD because she’s using me as a pacifier for a big chunk of the night.. I’m just afraid of nipple confusion after what happened with my son. Yay for great weight gain!!

    Kylie M.

  • @kmac103 we haven’t introduced one yet. Hmm it’s not a bad idea, I don’t know if it would work but maybe. I am with you on the nipple confusion fear though. Also tied babies generally have difficulty with them, my older son physically couldn’t take one until he was fixed. But seriously there’s no way this kid is really hungry every 2 hours. Last night he was up every hour and was only take one side before conking back out so maybe you’re on to something.
  • @zande2016 DD is EXACTLY the same! Up every hour and not wanting to latch properly then when she does she nurses for a bit and falls asleep. An hour later, awake and mad all over again. I just wish there was a way to know that if I gave her a pacifier she won’t start refusing the breast.. This is when a manual for each baby would be beneficial!
