Re: Baby Registries

  • Might as well start, just for fun!

    1) Where have you/are you going to register?
I ended up at Babies R Us (not closing in Canada). I really wanted to register on Amazon, but so many people are still anti-online shopping that I figured it would be a big fail.

    2) What are some registry traps you've discovered (ie wipe warmers)?
Wipe warmers and bottle warmers, for sure. .

    3) Found any hilarious WTF items?
Saw some knee pads for babies learning to crawl... lol

  • 1) Where have you/are you going to register?
We registered on Babylist. I like that I can add things from Etsy and pretty much any store and people buying gifts get free shipping. I also really like that we get our registry completion discount months before baby is due (automatically applies at checkout starting in December). Their customer service department is awesome too.

    2) What are some registry traps you've discovered (ie wipe warmers)?
Not sure if it’s a registry trap or not, but the disposable bags and dispenser that clip on the diaper bag. I feel like these are just a slightly more expensive version of dog waste bags we buy already.

    3) Found any hilarious WTF items?
Not yet, but I haven’t explored too many baby specialty stores so far.

  • Apparently, those are fanny pack seats to 'help' you hold your child...and the split pants are popular in Asia somewhere. I was udderly confused on what that thing was especially with the bare bum showing. Someone on facebook explained it. That thing seems dangerous no matter what it is, but a portable fanny pack toilet is as WTF as they come.
  •  We've barely even begun to think about a registry yet. The Babylist registry above sounds like a good prospect. I like the idea of one registry for multiple stores.

Also, a giant "WTF?" to the fanny pack toilet. Eww.

  • @galactickates that is the craziest thing I have ever seen! Seriously... WTAF?!?

Hahaha omg! I think that takes the cake.
  • 1) Where have you/are you going to register?
Just Amazon. This is baby #2 and I don't expect a shower so it's mostly a list for me to check things off.

    2) What are some registry traps you've discovered (ie wipe warmers)?
So much. Wipe warmers, bottle warmers, disposable changing pads, cart covers, etc.

    3) Found any hilarious WTF items?
Probably but I can't think of any at the moment.

  • 1) Where have you/are you going to register?

Amazon. As stated above, this is baby #2, so it will mostly be somewhere to direct my mom or MIL if they ask what we need.

    2) What are some registry traps you've discovered (ie wipe warmers)?

Receiving blankets (like the flannel-ish ones). I had them on my registry for DS, and they’ve never been used.

    3) Found any hilarious WTF items?

    Pee pee tee pees. Useless.

FTMs, an amazing resource for you to use as you’re building your registry is lucieslist.com. The site breaks down all the baby gear by category and gives plenty of options for each budget.

  • @saltedcaramel518 I made one solely because my mom and MIL will be like "what do you want for Christmas? What can we buy the baby, etc. etc." And since it's been almost 6 years, if they want to help buy some stuff, I won't object.

  • I actually have a wipe warmer, and it's kind of nice!  I didn't register for it (thought they were stupid) but an old co-worker got it for me and didn't include a receipt, so I kept it.  I like how they are easily accessible and DD never fussed when we were out and about and had to use a cold wipe.  For me, it would have been a bigger hassle to try and return it.

Don't register for blankets, you will get a ton anyway!

There are a few things I need with baby number 2 simply because they are coming in the winter-- car seat cover, possibly some warmer clothes.  I also want an infant insert for the ergo.  Trying to decide about a double stroller.  DD 1 will be almost 3 and doesn't ride in the stroller much the way it is but it may be nice to have a double at times.  Will probably see if any friends are ready to get rid of one.
  • @saltedcaramel518 ah!  I had never heard of Lucie’s List and I just looked it up and it’s a gold mine!!  Thank you!!!
  • @galactickates I saw one of those in real life!

I’m pretty sure it’s just a seat to help you hold a toddler and not a toilet, at least that’s what it looked like in person.

But why have a kid in the picture with his butt exposed? That's just a fashion trend?
  • I'm creating an amazon registry mainly just for myself (baby 2) to make a list and to get the completion discount. I also got a wipe warmer as a gift and didn't mind it.. prob wouldn't buy it for myself, but I feel like the wipes are easier to get out of the warmer than the packs they come in. Also, I love the receiving blankets.. we used them as burp cloths (actual burp cloths seem way to small/narrow to be useful at all to me) or to lay on our bed/couch under DD in case of spit up.. and maybe this is gross, but we also wiped her nose with them.. the cloth was less harsh on her face and more environmentally friendly than tissues. We would just wash them when they got really gross.

This may not be as environmentally friendly as a receiving blanket, but I love Boogie Wipes. (Yes, they’re really called that.) They were super soft, gentle, and soothing on little
noses. I bought them in bulk packs.

We had a bottle warmer and DH used it for when I went back to work. I work nights so it was a quick was to warm a bottle at 3am. DS would not eat a cold bottle of breastmilk. I already bought a new one for #2.

  • But why have a kid in the picture with his butt exposed? That's just a fashion trend?
Idk, I know people who do EC use those spit pants. I’ve seen a lot of weird pictures on Facebook ads so maybe it’s to draw attention?

  • @galactickates apparently those pants are popular in an Asian country, I think it was Korea. They zip on the butt...who knows why? They are seriously WTF.
  • I did an Amazon registry again because I'll end up ordering the few things I need off Prime anyway. Plus I love their registry welcome box! Mine this time included a cute Muslin swaddle, adorable neutral onesie, bandana bib, an Avent bottle, box of Seventh Generation samples, Dreft samples, full size Huggies wipes, and a few other diapers/wipes/creams samples.
  • Mostly I think it's smart to register at the store you'll end up shopping at yourself, since they usually give you a nice completion discount and a handful of store-specific coupons.

    What is EC?
  • @galactickates Elimination Communication, potty training for babies!

    What is EC?
It stands for elimination communication. It’s where you watch your baby for cues that they’re going to pee or poop and hold them over a potty when they go. Some people do it from the time their baby is born.
  • @galactickates EC is ‘elimination communication.’ It’s sort of potty training from birth. Instead of using diapers they will hold the baby over the toilet or a bowl when the baby may need to pee or poop.

  • 1) Where have you/are you going to register? Amazon, this is baby #2 and I just want an easy place to keep track of what we need, I want the completion discount, and something to share with family if they ask (especially with Christmas right before baby comes). I LOVE the Amazon welcome gift, too.

    2) What are some registry traps you've discovered (ie wipe warmers)? Wipe warmers (we tried one, but the last about 10-15 wipes always dried out and even turned brown), receiving blankets (we got a bunch, and we kept one on each level of the house for spit up and swapped them out each day the first few months. BTW: cloth diaper inserts were the BEST for burp clothes!!), boppy, bumbo seat (daycare used this a ton with Elyse when she was 3-4 months old, but we only used it like twice at home) and think twice about meds, since they have expiration dates! Like tylenol, motrin, gas drops, gripe water..best to buy those once you need them. Sunscreen can't even be used first 6 months.

    3) Found any hilarious WTF items? MIL bought this crawling doll to encourage the baby to be mobile. But it's super slow, doesn't actually crawl more than just move forward an inch, and isn't even cuddly, so it's not much good use. I, myself, was a way better motivator for her to move than some weird doll moving like a snail.

  • Bottle warmers, btw, are a MUST-HAVE in our home. DD only takes breastmilk warm, even though she'll drink whole milk cold. She's 17 months, and we still warm her cups of milk if we're giving previously frozen breastmilk.  Also, you can't microwave breastmilk! If you ever plan to store pumped breastmilk in the fridge or freezer to use at a later time, I can't think of any other way to warm it, besides laying it in a bowl of hot water, which takes years because the water cools off. Or unless you want to boil water...which also takes longer. When you want to quickly heat up a bottle of cold breastmilk, a bottle warmer is a lifesaver.

  • OMG I just found this Lucie's List and I AM IN LOVE <3 thank you thank you thank you. I am an over-researcher, and my DH is 10x worse.

    Andrea -- FTM at 39!

  • We're going to register at Buy Buy Baby.  I'd love to do a babylist or Amazon registry, but we did a babylist type registry for our engagement party and people were soooo confused.  And we have a bunch of tech-impared older people who want to go to the store and buy the item rather than buy online.  We might make one for Amazon for ourselves and our parents to get the bigger-ticket items, so we can get the welcome box and the completion discount.  Our kids will not have these issues in 25-30 years!  And I agree Lucie's list is amazing.  My wife loves to research things and compare; it has helped her out a lot!

My wife and I have conceived a babe with my body and frozen donor sperm through IUI, with medication support (clomid, ovidrel, and injections of progesterone)

    IUI #1, #2, and #3: Dec 2017, Jan 2018, and Feb 2018 - all BFN
HSG Test: April 2018 - all clear!
    IUI #4: April 15/16, 2018 - BFP!! EDD: Jan 7, 2019

  • Last time, with DD, we registered at BuyBuy Baby, Target, Babies R Us, and Amazon :D we only told people about Target and Amazon, but the other 2 we did so we could get the welcome goodies and the completion discount.

  • @sweetyjenj that’s so smart!  We were thinking of Amazon and Buy Buy Baby Buy there’s definitely things I’ve seen at Target so maybe we’ll set that up just for the discounts!

  • @rooonilwaazlib @mrsmang and anyone else who is registering at Buy Buy Baby-- you can also use Bed Bath and Beyond Coupons and gift cards there!  We bought a glider when expecting DD and we had a bunch of gift cards left from our wedding and saved a ton of money on a really nice glider, plus we used a 20% off coupon.
  • Speaking of hilarious WTF items, this popped up in my Facebook news feed. Seems like it would be easier to just bring a small container of cleaning solution if you're that paranoid about germs.... Or just set the bottles on clean towels and don't let them touch the supposedly-disgusting sink.

  • PSA: If you have an Amazon registry "Starting on July 16, Amazon Baby Registry is giving away a free Munchkin baby bottle to Prime customers who make any $5 or more purchase on their registry."

For anyone doing babylist, I loved the concept but it was a disaster. People were confused by it, and I got almost nothing from it. :-( and that was just last summer
Was the website itself difficult for people to use?  Or did you have a lot of people who weren't very tech savvy trying to use it?
