Infertility

ER tomorrow... freaking out... help!

On my IVF#1 last year, I was put on general anaesthesia and I just slept throughout the whole process and didn't have much issues afterwards. But tomorrow, since I only have 2 follies (left and rt), I'll just be out on local anaesthetic. We just called the clinic today and asked if we could just have the GA bc I'm afraid that I'd move too much tomorrow during the Er and dr won't be able to do the procedure well. The nurse told us that the meds won't take effect so soon, that the procedure might have finished before they start to kick in, considering i only have 2 follies. So, it's local anaesthetic for me.

Have any of you done an ER with a local a? I thought my pain threashold was high until I did an HSG last year, without anything. I'm just so worried now about the pain I'd have to go through tomorrow.

@tinjp78 maybe they will also have you connected to IV so if you’re in pain they can give you more pains meds?

anyway, just wanted to wish you good luck tomorrow!!!

  • Yes @prudence9-2 I'm also assuming I'd have an IV as I've seen other ladies at the clinic having it while waiting for their procedure. Thank you for your support. I'm now trying to search for the best method to prepare for the worst.
  • @tinjp78 I’ve had hysteroscopy done with only local anesthesia when it is usually performed with GA. They had the IV with more pain meds if I needed it. And it turned out to be just fine.

I hope it goes without too much pain!

    Good luck!!

@prudence9-2 I couldn't help but cry when I saw your post. It gives me strength to know that you were able to go through a hysteroscopy with a local anaesthesia. I'll try to be calm from now.

GL @tinjp78! My clinic doesn't use GA for ERs, only local. I had 22 eggs retrieved and survived :) It wasn't pleasant, but my ER took a long time and they had to take a break in between ovaries. I think your ER should be fairly quick so you'll be just fine!

  • @tosh24 Thank you for lurking. Wow 22 with only a local? I'm really happy you ladies are here! It gives me more and more courage to know these things.

@JamieH2000 Thank you for the thoughts and oh boy, I haven't congratulated you yet!!!! I've been so wrapped up with myself lately. I'm very happy for you <3<3<3
  • Whew! I'm not freaking out anymore. I survived! I'm lying down in my clinic's recovery room. The procedure ended almost 2 hours ago. The total prep time and actual procedure took about 20-30mins. And I was wrong worrying about the local anaesthesia because I DIDN'T have any at all. They just gave me a pain killer that I inserted in my anus. Here is what happened in the procedure:

    1. I was asked to pee before entering the theater.
    2. Nurse instructed me not to move and to endure the pain because it would be dangerous if I did move. They'll notify me when the needle is abt to puncture my vaginal wall to access the ovary.
    3. A nurse sanitized my vaginal area with an anticeptic of some sort- it was quite cold but was fine for me bc I was starting to sweat from my nervousness.
    4. The dr came and gave me a pelvic exam, it was rougher than the usual exams that she had given me.
    5. Next she notified me that she'd sanitize inside my uterus with an antiseptic and it was gonna be painful.
Yes, it was pretty uncomfortable but not excruciating. I felt warm thick fluid was being pumped inside me there, lasted for 2-3 minutes I guess.
    6. Then, dr punctured the right vag wall and I thought she got something but later on I was told that they got nothing.
    7. Next was the left side and got 2
    8. Lastly, dr put some gauze inside my uterus and informed me that it was gonna be painful and that she'll remove it after 2-3 hours later. I didn't feel that much pain, almost nothing.
    9. All throughout the procedure, one nurse held my pelvis down to keep me from moving, it helped me feel a bit at ease that someone is supporting me.
    10. I was hooked with an iv drip with antibiotics for 30 mins.

DH is at the waiting area and dr called him to her office to discussed with him the option whether to do ICSI or conventional IVF. Dr suggested the later bc 1) his SA today was ok for it  2) ICSI stresses the egg. He decided on doing conventional IVF.

We only have 2 eggs wherein one was from a small follicle so... the chance of fertilization is slim. We'll see tomorrow.

thank you ladies for giving me your support during my freak out time. It really did give me courage hearing your stories and experience. I <3 you all!

  • @tinjp78 glad it went ok and wasn’t painful! FX both eggs fertilize!!

will you get the fertilization report tomorrow?

  • @tinjp78 - keeping FX for your fertilization results! Thinking of you!
  • @JamieH2000 I still consider myself a baby warrior especially when I see all what you and others have gone through. I still haven't experienced a PIO shot yet  My dr gave us a 45% discount since we just got 2 eggs, we appreciated this gesture.

@wishing-and-hoping thank you dear! I'm also rooting hard for you and already stalking you at the July thread.

@bakerstreetboys I'm sorry if my post added to your fear. But I think this procedure I just went through here in Japan is not often or not at all performed there in the States or Canada. Last year my ER with GA was no biggie. Just watch out for OHSS, drink lots of water from now.
  • @tinjp78 No, your post didn't add to my fear!  I've been dreading it since signing the papers for IVF ;)  My clinic doesn't do GA either, which is why I'm anxious about it.  All worth it in the end if it works though!  Congrats on your two embries fertilizing!

  • @tinjp78 wow! hats off to you for doing an ER without GA. I don't think I could bear anything without a lot of medication. FX for your embries to keep growing <3
  • @rara_avis_8 Thanks. I also thought I wouldn't pull through but the nurses at the clinic were supper supportive and showed such confidence that it would be all alright. It helped me much. Plus I thought this procedure won't be tougher than the actual delivery of the baby. Here in Japan, they don't give any meds at all during the labor up until the delivery. So I thought, that ER would be my pain practice.
