Re: General Registry Thread

  • Serious question: what are car seat covers for exactly? I never got one for our first but felt like a bad mom for keeping the bucket seat uncovered when we were out. But I never understood the point of them!

@PensiveCrayon I used it if it was raining, snowing, or super windy mostly. I know they make thicker, sherpa-lined ones for winter. We got one with DS but it wasn't ever that cold when he was little, I may dig it out for this babe since s/he will be so little during "winter", if we even have one...sorry, still bitter that this winter we only had 2 days of snow and it melted within a day lol.

ETA I know some mom's use them to keep people away from baby, too :joy: which I get, but I just left my son in the seat if I didn't want people holding him.

  • @CecilB93 Aah, okay! That makes sense. We lived in Vegas when the first was born, so even though he came in January we never really had to deal with the elements.

  • @PensiveCrayon  I absolutely loved mine. It was great to keep DS warm and dry since he couldn’t wear a coat.  I actually kept him in his infant car seat past a year just to get us through the winter without having to deal with putting a coat on in parking lots.

@PensiveCrayon I used our infant car seat cover in restaurants to help keep baby asleep, while walking in his stroller to keep pollen, etc out of his face, and to keep rain and wind away from him while going to and fro

Going to Buy Buy Baby and actually playing with the products really helped me decide which stroller was right for me.  I highly recommend doing it (in a few months...you got time!)

Also, I think I am the only person in the universe that actually liked snap-button jammies better than zipper ones!

@tunnel I loved the snap button jammies, too. Pull 'em open and up in one motion, and especially when they're too little to roll over, it's no trouble at all to snap them right back up around the leg. Much easier than having to unzip the whole outfit and maneuver their little legs out, then get them back in before you rezip.
  • @tunnel @AGK2015 I didn't mind the snap jammies when my daughter was younger, but around 9 months she got the strength of Hulk and hated all diaper changes and clothing changes so zipper jammies were easier and quicker when she was fighting me. FFTC: I currently give her a wipe for her to bite at (I take the pieces away once she bites them off) while I change her diaper so she doesn't fight me lol
  • This is a great thread and a good reminder. I’m duplicating a lot of what’s already been said, but here are a few of our favorite essentials:

-diapers we used pampers and later up & up which fit similarly
-ubbi diaper pail  - expensive but looks good and really helps prevent smell
-nursing tank tops - I lived in these. Get at least a couple early. Practice opening it one-handed before baby arrives. Some of them are surprisingly hard to use, and keeping a newborn alive and happy is hard enough without the extra challenge.
-bottles - as others said, get several different ones, and don’t open unless/until you need them. Even if you think you won’t need them, you don’t want to need one and not have it. We went through different phases I think Dr. Browns and then Tommee Tippee when she was 6 months or so.
-Kiinde bottle warmer - so effortless and safe for breastmilk. Poppy refused to drink cold or room temp milk, period.
-aiden & anais muslin blankets for everything, including swaddling
-other swaddle wraps especially once she learned to break out of the blanket swaddles. We had to swaddle at first because she’s waje herself up hitting herself in the face if she wasn’t swaddled. ymmv.
-baby bjorn bouncer - this was a kid favorite. She loved this thing so much.
-rocknplay - I never intended to use but with a reflux baby, it was a game-changer.
-white noise - no particular brand but it was essential for her getting sleep. There are skdo some apps - Baby Pillow is one I think? But I preferred have a dedicated device for white noise.
-stroller that’s compatible with carseat - this was key for getting anywhere/getting anything done.
-mirror for the backseat of the car - we moved several hours away when Poppy was a couple months old. I had to make an emergency Target stop en route to find a mirror because it was just me & baby in the car and I was paranoid something would happen and I wouldn’t know.
-books that have nice art and/or you as an adult aren’t going to lose your shit after reading a couple million times.
-angelcare bath support - awesome from newborn until she was ready to sit up in the regular bath on a bathmat.
-ergo for babywearing - mine hated the wraps but once she was a little older was cool with the ergo. More freedom for her maybe?
-nosefrida - sounds gross but works well.
-hooded towels - we had dome from aiden & anais that were great.
-generic cloth diapers for spit up - we used a ton of these.

    Things we never rarely/used:
-infant wraps (she hated them. I was disappointed by this, will try again with #2).
    -bassinet (refkex baby, hated it)
    -crib (not until 5 months?)
-toys/playmats etc. - all this comes later. At least 4-6 months. I mean, go ahead and register or buy stuff, but somehow I was surprised that it’s all about the basic needs + social interaction early on.
-pacifier - what can I say, or kid never took to it. I tried 3 or 4 types, but no dice. ymmv
-special baby food maker - honestly never saw the point. We already have a magic bullet blender and I used that for making purees.
-Cute clothes newborn or 0-3 month - not needed and going to fet spit up on. At 6+ months it was more worthwhile.

I’m sure I’ll think of more later.

We caved and got a car seat mirror too!  I know that they are technically not the safest to have in the car (because anything in the car can become a flying object in the event of a crash), but ours had two very secure straps and was much safer than me turning around to check on baby while driving.

  • @ab_canada we have a clip on high chair and like it! We used it in place of a high chair until he was about 9ish months. He started to be able to crawl out and it felt dangwrdan at that point.

Yes to the car seat mirror! Yeah, sure it's a hazard, but not so much if you secure it correctly and two ways.

  • @tunnel I like the snap button pjs as well!!

I agree with the car seat mirror. Mine always moves and I have to fix it which is annoying, but I love being able to see DS.

  • I don't have much to add because most stuff has been hit on already.

We loved the rock and play. DS slept in it (secured with the straps) for the first six weeks until we started putting him in the crib. We tried to have him sleep in the pack and play but he did not like to lay flat at first. Once we started having him sleep in his crib though, he would not longer stay in the pack and play. I'd put him in it and he'd cry, so that sucked. He'd tolerate it for short periods of time and if he fell asleep and I put him in it, he'd wake right up and cry.

  • There's so much good stuff here already but I'll add my absolute favorites anyway.

Loved Buy Buy Baby & Amazon for convenience. Private Target list for the discount.

    Huge loves
    - Infant Optics video monitor
    - boppy lounger pillow (not the nursing pillow, but the lounger
    - Chicco nextfit carseat
    - MyBrestFriend. I borrowed (and have kept) this from a friend. Idk how people use the Boppy, that thing suuuucked for us.
    - SnuggleMe cosleeper (didn't actually register for this because didn't know we'd end up cosleeping. if i would've known, i would've registered for it. please save your shade
    - Pack 'n play, midtier version that has the napper, changing table and bassinet. There's some that push $200+ and I have no clue why, 'cause I just scrolled right past them.

  • @AdorkablePixie Do you have a Buy Buy Baby near you? It’s more expensive but similar to BRU in that it’s a big box store and you can see/try all the things. I think it will fill the gap BRU has left in many places.

  • @AdorkablePixie BRU was my favorite place for baby stuff with DS!! The closest Buy Buy Baby to us is a good 40+ minutes away, BRU was 5 minutes away. I feel your sadness!!

  • @CecilB93 thank you so much! Reading through atm and starting my registry!
  • @echo-charlietango I completed my registry list and made my purchase on Amazon, but it's not giving me the option for my gift box, it still says I need to make the $10 minimum purchase.  Did you have to wait a certain amount of time before you got the option to be sent the box?
  • @scaredunprepared I am in the same boat, so I looked in the FAQ and it says the item has to ship first, so the payment can process.
  • @katy0990 thanks! I also see I need to have prime... which I don't but my SO who is my co-registrant does.... guess that doesn't count though? The prime isn't checked off on the list :(
  • @scaredunprepared Can you set it up from his account instead?
  • @scaredunprepared I didn’t know that Prime was a factor! DH & I both have Prime accounts because we apparently can’t live without Two day shipping. I would also consider re-doing the registry under his account, just for the box

@katy0990 is right, The $10 item must ship before you can claim the gift. I bought a vacuum (that was not eligible for the completion discount) because I was going to buy it anyway, so two birds - one stone.

  • @echo-charlietango and @katy0990 I will check on his account first before redoing the whole thing. Maybe if I login on his and check the registry it will let me  accept the welcome box? If not I will redo it, but how silly? You'd think if the co-registrant is a prime member it would automatically recognize that.
  • @scaredunprepared I hope you can simply claim from his end, so much easier than re-making an entire registry!

  • @scaredunpreparedvIf you do have to make a new registry under your SO’s name you can always just quickly choose one thing from each category instead of redoing the whole thing. It would at least be easier that way.

  • Alright, Ima use this space to think through a breast pump conundrum I'm having. I welcome all opinions!

TL;WR: Do I want to get a Spectra S1 or the new Willow pump?

Pros of Spectra: I've used it before. It's a great pump. I know with 100% certainty that my insurance will cover it, because they covered it last time.

Cons of Spectra: I can't move around freely while using it, and I hate being strapped to a pump. HATE.

Pros of Willow: Complete freedom of movement! I can do anything while pumping! New and fancy toy!

Cons of Willow: Still very new. Not entirely sure insurance will cover it (though it IS a pump, and they're good about covering any type of pump). Possibly not as efficient as Spectra (based on YouTube review). Not sure flange size will fit me. Bags are super expensive (though this is sort of irrelevant because Tricare also covers pump supplies).

I talked to H about it and he's totally in support of me getting the Willow pump. The whole being-strapped-down versus not is a pretty huge pro in my book, but there's SO much remaining uncertainty with the Willow pump. So. SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT TO DO.

  • @PensiveCrayon what are you thinking you will use the pump for? ie: pumping at work 3x a day, or exclusively pumping or just pumping here and there?
  • @Jens_Hoes just pumping here and there to have a stash. This kid WILL take a bottle!! I’m a SAHM so I won’t need to use the pump super regularly.

  • @PensiveCrayon depending on the cost- I'm not sure I'd pay to be able to move around, especially because you likely won't be doing it on the regular.

  • @PensiveCrayon Do you still have the spectra and does it still work? Might be worth it to get the Willow and if you absolutely hate it use your old pump? Unless you aren’t supposed to use a pump after a certain amount of time.

  • @rosebud332 I think technically they're only supposed to be used for a year, so if she has it from a previous kid it would be best as back up for emergencies, not regular pumping.

@PensiveCrayon if I were you, I'd probably settle for the Spectra. If you were going to use it multiple times a day regularly I'd say go for the Willow, but if it's just here and there I say Spectra.

  • @PensiveCrayon If your insurance will cover it, I would get the Willow and then you will have both.  I know several people who have used their pump through multiple children. People used to do it all the time before insurance started covering them. If I go back to work, my plan is to keep one at home and one at school, so I don’t have to drag them back-and-forth so much. Also, I am not sure about the Willow brand, but with my Medela, the LC was able to give me larger filanges.
  • If you reuse your Spectra pump as a backup I would just get new tubing/attachments.
