This thread is amazing! So much great information, ideas & experience. I'm sure I'll duplicate a lot, but this is what worked and didn't for us:
Things/life savers that I used the most: Rock n Play - He never slept in this, but took naps & it was so handy to set him in there wherever we were! We invested in a nice big cushioned rocker/recliner chair rather than a glider because of comfort which was great Sound machine! I know this has been already said, but it helps block out other sounds so much and created a predictable sleeping environment for DS so we could put him to bed anywhere. We love the munchkin one ($20) Nursing tanks - I lived in these until I was done pumping (EP'd most of the journey) Nipple shield - this saved our breastfeeding experience because my nipples are small & he was tongue tied Thermometer - We have both a digital forehead/ear one as well as rectal & glad to have both Alcohol free sanitizing wipes - these were great to keep in the diaper bag for when we were out & about Dr Browns bottles/Pacifiers - These ended up being the only kind DS would take Halosacks - I HATE footie jammies for babies because they are so hard to change 8 times/night. We kept DS in a onesie with a halosack on & he slept great & was easy to change MOTN. Pillow for breastfeeing - I alternated between a regular pillow, boppy & Dr. Browns nursing pillow. Loved them all. Swing
Things that we didn't use: The high chair until he was 5 months old. Bottle warmer - it just wasn't for us and we found that using warm water works much better Most of the blankets we received - he became attached to one & the other 15 we got have never been used Sleep sacks - he just never liked to be swaddled & wouldn't sleep that way. I did keep them around in case #2 likes it. Hooded bath towel - I always just used a regular towel.
Where is the best place to register? Amazon worked great for us. Some older people don't know how to use it, but by now everyone knows someone else who can help them or they go get clothes. Speaking of clothes - we got TONS of them, so we regretted buying some of our own. People can't help themselves on buying the cute clothes!
How many registries should a new mom have? 1-3
STM's -what do you regret putting on your registry? Books maybe? We registered for books to give people ideas since the shower asked to bring a book rather than a card and we ended up with duplicates.
What did you not get enough of? Diapers for sure! This wasn't a horrible thing because we got to go get what worked for us. (Luvs)
@deutschmama My LO loved the carrier and so did I. We used the Moby wrap but I agree that most are basically the same thing. Make sure you practice wrapping it before the baby comes though. I had a mental breakdown watching YouTube videos trying to the it with a screaming baby. Sometimes I would put the wrap on before going shopping and then take him right from the car seat into the wrap. We also used the baby bjorn....well mostly my husband. It was much easier for him to just clip on vs the wrap.
@deutschmama So, I actually love my Didymos Lisca (in my base size, so a 6) the best of all my wraps; I've got some Oscha, some Firespiral, a little Tula, some off-brand. It's broken in a lot faster than any of the others it's floppy and flexible enough to get a good wrap, grippy enough that it doesn't slip, breathable enough that I don't mind wearing it in the summer, and strong and supportive enough that I can (and do!) even carry my toddler in it. The one I've got is I think 260 GSM and 100% organic cotton, which is definitely a factor; a higher GSM would be a lot warmer, and different fiber profiles or weaves add different characteristics (something with silk is gonna be stiffer, something with tencel more slippery, that kind of thing). We paid full price for it and I feel like I've gotten my money's worth even though we didn't get it until Nugget was about 6 months.
That said! There's probably a babywearing group local to you (here in the states I'd tell you to look for the local chapter of Babywearing International) with a lending library where you can check out wraps (and soft carriers and ring slings, for that matter) and get good advice on what will work for you specifically before you invest (not to mention awesome tips on how to use them safely; there's definitely a learning curve, and much like carseats there are some definite guidelines you'll want to follow to ensure that no matter what type of carrier you end up with you're carrying baby in a way that is as safe and secure as possible). There's also a thriving secondary market for these things on Facebook (general BST groups for all things babywearing, as well as BST groups dedicated specifically to one brand), and I'd have no qualms about getting a carrier, wrap or ring sling secondhand. I'll probably sell my own once I'm done carrying babies, which is another reason I don't mind having gotten a little spendy on some of them.
Sleeper Gowns for sure. So much easier to change diapers which is all the time with newborns. We had a lot of cute newborn clothes but if we were staying in, he wore the sleeper gowns 24/7.
I'm team bottle warmer. I got the Kiinde starter set and one came with it, and though my child never really took to bottles (urgh, that's not going to happen this time!) for the few that he did it was nice to be able to pop a frozen bag of BM in the warmer, set the timer, and go do something else. Because there will always be something else to do.

There is so much to say! A lot of great advice has already been given. 1) we are having winter babies, so they will probably have sleeper pajamas- but zip one not button ones. Buttoning at night while they are not cooperating and you are tired - not worth it. 2) you can put anything on a registry, so when we weren’t having a shower with ds2- we put bookshelves, house stuff, etc. on it. We did not want people to buy this- we wanted to make purchases using the discount. 3) when your are “completing” your registry you often get completion codes for discounts. So for us, we will do another registry for kid #3 with no intention of anyone using it but ourselves. I may up the due date by a couple months so I can buy what I want early with a discount. Im not advising #2 or 3, because it can be confusing if you are really using the registry. I’m just sharing the info in case it makes sense for anyone else. This worked well at Target for us. I hope I sound thrifty and not too cheap in this post.
@Activebaby we’ve thought of putting some not-really-for-baby items on the registry to get them at the discount too. Did you have to start with them on at the beginning, or can I add that stuff after most of the actual baby items have been purchased? If it’s from the start only, I guess I can make a note to friends/family that it’s just there because I’m being frugal. Lol
@tumbleweed-1 Ha, if only! It is frustrating though, because some stuff doesn’t qualify for the discount when it really should. I forget exactly what all didn’t, but I remember being surprised.

@coco2787 I KNOWWW!! I basically laughed at people using huggies saying "kirkland is made by huggies and they are cheaper!!" Then I used them.. You wouldn't think they would fit so different but they do. Mind you I still buy all our Huggies diapers from costco because savings.

We added some stuff as we were in the store before checking out. You can add it later. This was for Target. I never had an amazon registry.
I also want to reiterate what several other ladies have I also want to reiterate what several other ladies inside said about every baby nd family being different. For example, we used Our pack and play daily for 18 months. My husband actually preferred the changing table on the pack and play to the changing pad on the dresser. However, I know others who never use theirs.
I would definitely take into consideration the family size that you are hoping for and the amount of storage you have. With DS, we splurged on the baby jogger city select stroller with the second seat kit, knowing that down the road we would need a double. I did not want to buy a single stroller that would eventually have to be replaced. Our high chair is also a three in one system, so DS can continue to use the booster while baby is in the high chair. We also kept things as gender neutral as possible so they could be reused.
I would not recommend registering for clothes because people will buy them anyway and the styles change so frequently. If you cannot avoid the temptation to buy clothes yourself, I would definitely stick to buying larger sizes, like six months and up. People tend to love to buy the newborn and 0 to 3 months clothes and it really sucks when your baby outgrows all of those without even getting to wear them very much and do you all of a sudden need to go shopping for larger clothes. Also, zippers are significantly easier than snaps, especially when you are running on no sleep.
They make awesome car seat covers that wrap around the infant seat. We loved ours and kept DS in the infant seat until over a year (March baby) so we could use the cover through the winter.
Buy Buy Baby is wonderful. We drove over an hour to go to one just so we could test drive strollers and try to see which car seat would fit best in my car. They also except the 20% off coupons from Bed Bath and Beyond.
Also, my hospital gave us a sleep sack. I am not sure if that is typical, though. I also was able to get a hand pump from a lactation consultant at the hospital for free. Or use the term pretty loosely because I’m sure we paid for it as part of delivery haha.
I loved my boppy pillow and hands free pumping bra. Also, buy multiple sets of the pump parts. Cleaning those is such a pain.
I was actually given a used baby food maker. I found it easier to just steam the fruit and veggies on the stove and then purée them in the blender. The baby food maker made such small portions and was a pain to clean.
Also, I would stock up on a first aid kit. You will want to have a rectal thermometer, Tylenol, etc on hand so you are not running out at 3 am to find them.
@maureenmce I would also recommend the Spectra. DS has trouble latching at the beginning and I actually rented the hospital grade Medela pump for like 2 weeks after I brought him home. I switched over to my spectra after that and it worked just as good. It’s quiet and it’s really nice because it operates on battery so you don’t have to be near an outlet to pump!

You all have inspired me! I started my registry yesterday. (We are keeping it private for now, but at least it’s one thing to check off as started). I got so stuck on the car seats though. Aren’t they supposed to be replaced every few years? My 6 year old niece is still in a booster, so if I shelled out for an AIO, would it even last 6-7years? And what if I get in an accident?! Doesn’t the whole thing need replaced? I decided there were too many variables on that and I should focus on easier things to add to the list.
@tumbleweed-1 They do have expiration dates on them, but I don’t know off the top of my head how many years out they go. And if you get into an accident insurance should replace your seat for you...at least it did for us. I don’t know about twice though, which was what happened in my dream last night! I was so happy to wake up and not have to deal with any of the hassle I’d just gotten myself into.

@tumbleweed-1 I think they generally expire every 10 years. Yes, even a fender bender means you have to replace the car seat. I think sometimes insurance will pay for the new one, but of course that isn’t universal. What I figured, and it worked out for me, was I was planning on having more than one baby pretty quickly, so I bought the infant carrier car seat which dd is now out of and into a convertible car seat, and I can use the carrier I already have for new baby.
@rosebud332 I didn’t even think about the multiple kids thing! Maybe I will get the individual stages. I’d like to have all of my 3 children in the next 4/5 years and be done. My FTM thoughts- who knows what life has in store! Lol
@tumbleweed-1 If you plan to have multiple children in car seats at the same time, I would definitely keep that in mind when shopping for size reasons. We love the Britax B Safe because it had metal sides, but it is pretty big and would not work if we ever need 3 across.
2 other random items I thought of that are not technically baby products, but were very useful are a car outlet adapter for pumping while driving and a dimmer switch. MH put a dimmer in our room and in the nursery and it was awesome for middle of the night feedingd or checking on baby without waking him.
@katy0990 another thing to think about! Am I the only person overwhelmed by this? Last night I dreamt I had one day left of my pregnancy and I was a little disappointed when I woke up and remembered I still had months to go. But now I’m relieved! I can’t even commit to a car seat, idk how I’m going to be responsible for a small human.
@tumbleweed yeah I am happy to have more months to prepare, I had a dream this week that i had the baby but kept it in a folder (yes, like a paper school folder) so I didn't lose it! And I would just leave it all day on the table in the folder lol.
@tumbleweed-1 you have plenty of time to figure it out! If you can, go to Buy Buy Baby and you can see, touch, and even test them in your vehicle.
I think our nearest BuyBuyBaby is in WA state. Like in Seattle. Which is 3 hours away AND has sales tax. I’ve never seen a real brick & mortar BuyBuyBaby store. Would other stores let me test car seats in my car? It sucks that Babies R Us is dying.
@tumbleweed-1 I would agree with buying an infant bucket seat and a convertible. While I planned on having multiple children, I never expected to have them this closely. My daughter will still fit in the bucket seat when this Dec baby is born, so I'll move her to the convertible. You don't NEED a convertible yet though. So you can always wait for Amazon Prime Day, black Friday, etc. for deals on them.
@tumbleweed-1 Don't worry, you'll figure it out. I think it helps that babies start out fairly easy (hungry? dirty? tired?) and then get more complex over time. Like a video game or something!
But yes. Infant bucket seat + convertible means we aren't having to purchase a seat right from the get-go this time around. If you need a breakdown of good seats at different price points, I'd recommend Lucie's List.

@tumbleweed-1 yes to what Katy said! I am having to buy 3 new seats since we are having a 3rd - we are trying not to need to replace h’s car, so we need 3 across. I wish I would have thought about this. I spent a lot of money on the kids seats because I wanted them to be super comfy- they are also on the bigger side. Live and learn I guess. I don’t need 3 new seats for my car... I just need a new car, ugh.
@tumbleweed-1 I just looked it up - BuyBuyBaby is in Tukwila (just south of Seattle). It would save you the hassle/time of going into Seattle if there's traffic (if you are coming from Oregon or something).
This thread is awesome, everyone! I created my "registries" at BabyList and Amazon to get the free baby boxes and I have to say that they are awesome. Now I'm actually starting to think about the car seat and things I want, instead of the random ones I threw into the Amazon registry to qualify for the free baby box. If any of you are waiting to spend $10 off the Amazon registry to get the free box, I put a Bella Band on the registry and bought that. It's been useful every day for the past 3 weeks.

That’s so sweet of you, you didn’t have to do that. Yes, I’d be coming up from OR. Maybe I’ll see if I can convince some friends/family to do a day trip this summer. I haven’t been that far into WA since I was a teen. Lol
@katy0990 I probably wouldn’t buy anything there in person at that store because sales tax. I’d just check things out, see how difficult it is to get a car seat in a car Then go home and add it to my registry or buy it online with my OR address. We weren’t taught how to do sales tax like the other states were (I think there is one other that doesn’t have it, but I forget which one). We make up for it in the most out of control income & property taxes though!
@ab_canada we have one of those at my dad's house, it works well, and it's great if you don't have a lot of space. Make sure to look at the design of your table though, if it's got really thick sides or the underneath of the table isn't smooth it won't work.

@ab_canada I second what @coco2787 said. I bought one second hand, but it doesn’t work with our table. We planned on keeping it in the car to use away from home, but that became kind of a hassle with all of the other gear.

We weren’t taught how to do sales tax like the other states were (I think there is one other that doesn’t have it, but I forget which one). We make up for it in the most out of control income & property taxes though!

that place where you can still remember dreaming?
That's where I will always love you.
That's where I'll be waiting."
