Questions 5/11

Re: Questions 5/11

  • @tinattt23 Thanks. I see my dr next week, I'll ask him about it.

  • @tinattt23 I have no idea the difference in potency or anything like that, but I found this magnesium powder on amazon that you mix with water. The flavor I got actually tasted like raspberry lemonade so it was easy to drink. I didn't use it for anything specific though, my friend had just told me to try it because it helped her sleep well and relax. So not sure how it would do for the restless legs or anything. But if your chalky liquid was too gross, you could look into it.
  • I take magnesium as prevention for migraines. My OB was in favor of it, said it would help prevent the leg cramps and maybe even help with constipation. It seems to work well for me!

For those who take Metformin make sure you talk to your OB/ DR before starting Magnesium supplement as it counteracts it and can lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels)

  • Thank you all for your input! It's looking like later is the way to go. My mother has mobility issues and doesn't speak English nor Swedish (the only languages with which you can get by in Sweden), so having her take a cab on her own would be a no go, but I'm sure in that situation we can send a cab for her. Dunno why I didn't think of that earlier haha

@jemmerjams we're in exactly the same boat! Travel time for my mom would be around the same, so an emergency flight when labor comes is a no go. My older brother and I were also early, and at this point I so wish genetics played a part in that  :#

As for classes, I meet my midwife in two weeks to discuss those options. Up until now it hasn't felt too real, so I'm hoping having the classes helps with that!

  • Question for STMs who have been induced prior, and not because of late delivery -

If you knew well ahead that you were going to be induced (they told me from the start), when did your doc pick or tell you the date?
  • @laurasauruss - You could also have your Mom bring the printed name/address of the hospital with her to give to the driver.

That is how my Mom and Aunt would get around Ecuador when my Aunt lived there - they would pick up the hotel’s business card and give it to their driver when headed back.  (Mom spoke no Spanish, Aunt confused drivers better than directing them.)
  • @knottieamusements oo good idea, thanks!

I also just realized I used 'no go' twice in my previous post. So cringey. I'll escort myself out now

  • @chopchop25 I've been induced twice. My doctors always discussed the dates with me about a week or 2 before delivery. With my first induction I was given an option of a few different dates. With my second induction my doctor just told me what date and time I needed to go to the hospital. The date of your induction usually depends on the reason for your induction and the availability at the hospital.

Curious what are some reasons to be induced?

  • @chyvie Inductions can be a very controversial topic so I'm just going to answer based on my experience. There are a number of medical reasons why a woman could be induced. The most common one is preeclampsia. Depending on your pre-e symptoms your doctor could either send you straight in for a c-section or send you to start the induction process. HELLP syndrome could also lead to a medical induction.  Some doctors will induce you if you're full term and ready to deliver. With my first induction my doctor gave me 2 choices A. be induced around my due date or B. wait about 5-7 days after my due date to be induced. I chose option A. My second pregnancy was high risk because early in my pregnancy I started developing symptoms of pre-e. The high risk dr. wanted me to be induced between 38-39 weeks because he thought the longer I was pregnant the greater chance I would develop pre-e or HELLP. I convinced my ob to let me go until 39+5 before being induced.

  • @chyvie I don't know other options (though I gather being way overdue can be one based on early conversations), but I will be induced because I'm on blood thinner. I can't have an epidural or if I need an emergency c-section it's riskier if I'm still on the thinner, so I will stop it 24h in advance of being induced, and then go back on it for a few weeks after delivery.
  • Common reasons for induction are pre-eclampsia, HELLP Syndrome, gestational diabetes, post-dates, previous quick delivery, ruptured membranes without labour, etc.

  • My mom was induced at 39 weeks with baby #2. They were worried she would be as big as me. I was an emergency C-section because I was too big.
  • I was induced because my water broke but I never went into labor and it’s unsafe to not deliver within 30-40 hours. But it wasn’t scheduled in advance, obviously. Water broke at 6 am, got induced at 6 pm that day.
  • Has anyone had their pap come back abnormal during pregnancy?
Apparently, my pap came back with abnormal results. Doc said it was "one step down from picture perfect", so I'm not concerned. She ended up telling me that I had abnormal cervical cells consistent with HPV. I'm confused by this though because I've been tested multiple times and have never had anyone say I have HPV? Am I just ignorant of how HPV works?
She said the most likely scenario would be that it clears up after birth.

@mytrueloves Not to panic! HPV can lie dormant for many years and come and go with no symptoms. It usually does clear up on its own, but some strains can come back later on.
  • chyviechyvie member
Thanks for all the insightful information!
@mytrueloves Your pap can be abnormal during pregnancy because of all the changes down there. My OB said she didn't even want to do a pap on me because I got on 3 months before getting pregnant and typically paps during pregnancy give abnormal results. She will give me one after birth.

I have had HPV three times and it cleared up on its own years ago. So if you are one step down from picture perfect I wouldn't be stressed.

  • @mytrueloves - my pap came back normal, but this particular doctor gave me a lot more details than previous doctors.  Specifically, the pap showed that I am positive for a couple different strains of HPV.

My understanding is that pretty much anyone who has been sexually active had likely been exposed.  This is why they don’t offer adult women the vaccination against HPV.

No paps during pregnancy for my Dr office. I have heard that most come back abnormal during pregnancy anyway so I wouldn't worry about it if your Dr isn't worried :)
  • My dr said there are many different HPV strains. The vaccine only defends against the top 3(?) cancer causing ones. So it is very possible you have one or more HPV strain, but as others have said most come and go or show up years after infection.
  • Delivery weight and length of labor..... are these things genetic?  Does anyone know?  My mom had two very quick labors with my sister and I ... was hoping that might indicate how mine might go...?
  • edited May 2018
@linssears4 Not in my case. My mom had 3 kids and all of us were delivered so quickly she didn't even have time for an epidural. I don't remember what she said about my delivery (I'm the oldest), but her labor with my sister was 45 minutes. Then with my brother she was induced because they were scared she wouldn't make it to the hospital in time. All of us were around 8-9 lbs.

Then for me, my labor with DD from my very first contraction to delivery was 18 hours. Not too bad since I waited 6 hours to go in to the hospital. But I was actively pushing for a little over 2 hours and they had to vacuum assist to get her out. She was barely 7 lbs.

I was really, really hoping that it was going to be like my mom's. Nope, Sorry! I hope you get luckier than I was!

@linssears4 My midwife told me my labor is likely to be more similar to my sister’s than my moms. Of course it’s not a guarantee but I can’t wait to see how hers goes! (She’s due in 10 days!!)
ETA: I really hope it’s not like my mom’s..she was in labor with me for over 30 hours!
  • @linssears4 my understanding is that genetics sometimes plays into it but is definitely not a guarantee.

  • Everyone told me to look at my mom for when baby would come. Nope! My brother and I were both early. I was induced a week after my due date because there were zero signs that he was going to make his appearance on his own. Since Z and #3 have the same due date, I'm hoping #3 comes early this time! I would feel bad if they had to share their birthday!

  • @linssears4 My mom had 2 c-sections. I was 8lbs and my sister was 9lb 7 oz. I've had 2 natural deliveries and DS1 was 7lbs. 11 oz. and DS2 was 6 lbs. 13 oz.

  • @linssears4 My pregnancies have been vastly different than my mom’s. I ended up with pre-e for both, and she never had complications. My kids both came three weeks early and she had two of us on our actual due dates. My youngest sister and I were in the 7 lb range and my middle sister was 8 lbs, my kids were 6 lbs 13 oz and 7 lbs 2 ozs.

@chopchop25 with my daughter I knew at 34 weeks I’d be induced at around 37 weeks. He scheduled a date for that week but it got moved up when my bp got too high and I became more of an emergency induction.
  • thanks for that input!!!  i am hoping my delivery is similar to my mom's but by the sounds of it, I'm on my own haha!
  • @krzyriver that's my concern as well. DS and this baby have the same due date. I was induced at 38 weeks with him though so I'm hoping that I dont have to be this time as well.
