Baby Names

Kera?

My husband and I both really like the name Kera for a girl.  However, I have two lingering concerns:
  • Pronunciation: (Ours is "care-uh"), and
  • Spelling: Whether this spelling is considered to be too "you-neek."
Do you know anyone named Kera?  How would you pronounce this name spelled this way?  What are your general thoughts on the spelling?

I greatly appreciate your feedback.  Thank you very much in advance!

Re: Kera?

  • I know a Cara and Kara both fine. I know a Care-Uh and Car-Uh

Kera is asking for a lifetime of her name pronounced wrong. Cara/Kara is unique enough it doesn’t need misspelled

  • I’d go with Cara. Kara is fine too but I prefer the C.  I do not like Kera.
  • At least you already know it might be a little hokey. I think Cara is the more common way to get the pronunciation you are aiming for.
  • I would pronounce Kera more like Kiera than Kara. If you want the Care-uh sound you're better off with Cara or Kara.

  • Kara/Cara please! Your unique and non-phonetic spelling won't do your kid any favors when people reading it for the first time will inevitably pronounce it kee-ra.
  • Thank you very much for all of your feedback!  We would very much like to stick with a "K" name to carry on family tradition, so I would prefer Kara over Cara.  I read on another forum that pronunciation ("care-uh" versus "car-uh") tends to be regional.

@bbiutmcph does the Kara you know pronounce her name "care-uh" or "car-uh"?

@DanyTargaryen and @jmandtmbaby those are really good points about pronunciation.  Thank you!

I think Care-uh vs Car-uh could definitely be regional, just like you can get Tare-uh or Tar-uh from Tara. I'm in New England and have heard both ways for Tara, but the only Kara I went to school with pronounced it Care-uh.

For me the Kara is Care-uh and Cara is Car-uh. I live in New York as do they both although Car-uh is from the south originally

  • If you want a K name then I would go with Kiera or Kara

  • I would pronounce Kiera with that spelling. Same as you would pronounce Vera. I would go with Kara to avoid confusion :) Love the name btw.
  • I like Kera but pronounced like Kira/Keera not pronounced like Cara :)
  • I would do Cara or Kara if you want that pronunciation. Kera, I automatically think of Keira/Kira pronunciation. My niece is Keira and she is keer-ra pronunciation.

  • Not a fan of the spelling Kera. It will definitely be mispronounced even more than much more recognizable spellings Kara/Cara (care-uh car-uh).
  • I would pron Kera, "Kee-ruh." If you want pron "Care-uh," go with Kara spelling.

    Kera- “keer-ah”
    Kara- “Care-ah”
    Cara- “Car-ah

I’m from the south and that’s how I read each of them.
  • I’m in northeast and would pronounce Kara and Cara the same, “kare-a” but have also heard them pronounced “Carr-a”

Kera would have pronunciation issues and you’d probably get “Kiera” and “Kerr-a”

Ciara and Ceara are also pronounced Kiera
  • It’s a cute name! With the spelling “Kera”, I would pronounce it as “Keira”, though. I’d spell it “Kara” if you want the “care-uh” sound. One of my good friends is named Kara with the same pronounciation. :)
