Re: The great big Baby Registry thread!!!

  • As far as diapers I totally agree that every baby is different so stocking up ahead of time may be hard- my son is really little- he was in newborn/size 1 diapers for months. Then we pretty much skipped size 2 and he has been in size 3 since around 7 months and he is 14 months now (he is only 17.5 lbs). Same thing with clothes- you never know if you will have a little or big baby I guess- my son still fits in some 6 month onesies it's crazy! But he's mostly in 9-12 months. Then I have some friends who's babies are a few months younger then my son and already in 18-24 months.

  • I suppose I don’t really see the point of stocking up on diapers? Each baby is different with different needs and not all diapers fit the same. It turns out DD needs latex free diapers for now. DS never did. He also was in a size 4 at around 10 months. DD isn’t close to sizing out of 2s at 7.5 months. I had one box of NB and one box of size one on hard.

    Amazon Prime is a lifesaver!
  • @BostonBaby1 I felt compelled to stock up on diapers last time (my first baby) cause... That's what I saw my friends/family do? I think it also made me feel like I was getting prepared?
I've started to buy diapers a couple of times this time and then realized I straight up didn't feel the need. My husband can run across the street and pick up diapers and be back in under 20 minutes. I also have Amazon Prime and Prime Now is available in my area.
I'm thinking that about the time I put my hospital bag together I'll get a small package of newborns and a small pack of size 1's  and then just pick up what we need on the fly moving forward.
  • @stothi Are you sure your hospital doesn’t have them now? We were sent home with at least 5 days worth of swaddlers.

Oh, it’s pricey but the Little Martin’s Drawer nail file has been a lifesaver and is so so simple and easy even with a newborn.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01IC6RD4O/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1523931840&sr=8-3&keywords=little+martin%27s+drawer+baby+nail+file&dpPl=1&dpID=41dsCLjI6EL&ref=plSrch
  • @BostonBaby1 I don't know. I'll have to ask. It's a new hospital for me this time. The last one sent a few home but only maybe a day's worth. I don't plan to take any diapers to the hospital, just planning to have a few at home. I'm totally cool with sending hubby out on errands after a few days but I'd like to think we could just stay home for the first couple of days. Last time I couldn't really do much for over a week :'( I'm hoping this time will be better, but planning like it will be just as bad, if that makes sense.
  • Amazon Prime is amazing for diapers. If you do the subscription for monthly delivery, you get 20% off diapers. It’s definitely worth the prime subscription charge just for that.
  • My MIL already bought us a Costco box of newborn diapers. I had to explain to DH that we don't need more diapers because we don't know what size the baby will be...

The Kirkland brand diapers at Costco are essentially high end Huggies (I know a guy). I think they work great and they recently had $8 off a box so I did stock up on diapers for DD. I think stocking up is fine once you figure out what works well for you.

I think usually it's to try to get discounts. Like when Target does spend $100 get a $25 gift card. I'll buy 3 or 4 boxes at once because then I'm basically getting a free box of diapers next time I need to buy some.

But Prime subscription discounts can make that a moot point since the subscription discount is so big.

I should clarify, I don’t see the point of stocking up before baby but I agree that the discounts can be incentive once you know what you’re using.

Oh! Totally agree. I like to have enough on hand so I'm not running to the store days after coming home from the hospital, but definitely no stockpiling.

  • @DanyTargaryen you just rocked my world. I had no idea there was such a product. I am sold! TU!
  • While we are on the subject of diapers, I’m a big fan of Target brand once LO is out of NB size. I’m hoping they work for baby this time around. They are cheaper than Huggies/Pampers and work well, at least for us. They also have a decent nighttime diaper in size 3 and up. The diapers don’t really have much of a smell, have the wetness indicator stripe, and hold a lot of pee! Their prices beat out the Amazon prices on the brand names. The only problem is you become a slave to driving to Target to get more!
  • The Bobby Newborn lounger is life. And $29.99.
  • @Wishilivedinflorida I actually like the Walmart store brand diapers and they are the cheapest I've found anywhere. I didn't think they'd work all that well but for us they do. I don't think their nighttime diapers are quite as good as Pampers but they work well enough that for the price I'm good with the occasional tiny pee leak.
When buddy was an infant though I hated everything except Pampers. Only Pampers. No other diaper would do. Just nothing fit him as well. I gave away all the other diapers we had in our stockpile cause they all freaking leaked. But then when he got to about a size 3 all the sudden any brand fit just fine. I have no explanation for why.
  • The Bobby Newborn lounger is life. And $29.99.
Yes we loved the Boppy newborn lounger!! We had a swing and the lounger and didn't need a bouncer.

  • STMs, I would love if you could look over our must-have list to be sure I'm not forgetting anything obvious! Or maybe I have something on there that's not really necessary. It's looking like we won't be having a shower so I want to be sure H and I get ourselves the necessities. I think friends and family will still end up gifting us onesies and what not.

    Already Have:
    -monitor
    -four swaddle blankets
    -pacis
    -three different bottles
    -swaddle and sleep sack
    -bibs
-four cloth diapers (and two packs of newborn disposables to start us off)
    -onesies of various sizes
-a ridiculous amount of books and toys considering this child is only half baked.
    -Crib sheets

    Must Get:
-car seat (we have it picked out)
    -Crib
    -Bassinet
    -extra car seat base
-one baby carrier (tula ring sling or k'tan wrap)
    -pack n play
    -burp cloths
    -breast milk storage bags
    -baby tub
    -16 more cloth diapers
    -diaper pail + liner
    -nursing pads

@SkilledSailor crib mattress, and mattress protector.

I don't know if you were including that in crib and sheets, but I usually list them out separately.
Are you doing a changing table or do you have a dresser you can put a changing pad on? You don't "need" a changing table, you can change baby in your bed, the floor, the kitchen table, whatever, but sometimes baby pees or poops (or  both and maybe a puke too if you are real lucky) and I personally prefer that to happen not on my bed, the floor, the kitchen table whatever.

Eta: diaper bag of some kind. It doesn't have to be an actual diaper bag, a big purse or backpack totally works. I prefer a backpack style diaper bag or just an actual back pack.
  • @stothi Gah I keep forgetting the mattress! We plan on using a pad on the dresser for changes upstairs and the PnP downstairs. I have registered for a diaper bag but figured in a pinch we can just use a well organized backpack, haha. Thank you for your feedback!
  • @SkilledSailor I think your list looks OK. I'd add Nose Frida, thermometer specific for baby, and more diapers. We need to start a cloth diaper thread, but three very very quick pieces of advice on that front, there are a few more diaper related supplies I would suggest, but I'll wait for that in its own thread. 1-newborns tend to go through 12-16 (or more) the first month or two, per day. Keep that in nine for how many you want. 2-One-size diapers typically don't fit newborns for 2-14 weeks depending on baby size and shape. Up to you whether you want to worry about newborn sizing. 3. Check out the website Fluent love University and their Facebook page (if you're on FB), Fluff Love and CD Science-they can help you figure out best types, sizes, brands-as well as wash routines that make sense and don't depend on magic fairy dust and prayers to keep them clean, but science instead. :)

  • @SkilledSailor the list looks good! I’d suggest two mattress covers if you can swing it. There was a period where DD was leaking through and sheets changes at night weee frequent. If it gets the cover wet I worried she’d soak through again with no protector while we washed the first. Same applied when DD had her first stomach bug.

Other option for downstairs changing station is a 2nd changing foam pad on a surface. We have an IKEA table that is the pad’s shape and size so it minimizes the space it takes up. Just another option.

Id also list out small items so you can make one large drug store/target run. Shampoo, diaper cream, etc..
  • While baby was small in our room still we liked having a portable JJ Cole changing pad (meant for diaper bags or alone as a clutch). I would unfold it before changes to protect our bed, and it saved me on more than one occasion. Plus, I didn’t have to get out of bed to change the baby! We had one more in our living room since the one on our PNP station sucked. You can score them cheap on Amazon.
  • @SkilledSailor do you have more than one swaddle pod? If not I would recommend having a couple extra on hand since spit up/poopsplosions happen. Same with the sleep sack but that can probably wait a while. What about a manual/electric pump? Nursing pillow of some sort? I would probably consider either an auto rock n play or swing since many newborns are motion junkies and that could be the only way you get them to sleep, but if you have a Walmart near by, this can also be a wait and see and run out to get at the last minute. Also some sort of nail clippers or nail file since those newborn baby nails grow quick and they're sharp! I'd plan on getting a humidifier as well, and saline nasal spray since there's not much else you can do for those first few colds.
  • @pourmeamocktail Thank you for the FB suggestion! I'm planning on doing AIOs and just getting disposable newborn diapers. I have a few different AIOs that I'm interested in though.

@lcardinal04 That's a good point! We actually have a dresser in our living room that we could use.

    @Wishilivedinflorida I like your style!

@nlc8424 As of right now, just one swaddle pod. I do know how to make a tight swaddle with the muslin blankets but H doesn't.
  • Not all babies need or want to be swaddled so I personally don't recommend buying too many swaddle pods right away. Especially if you can do a decent job with a muslin blanket. I registered for and received 4 or 5 and never used a single one with DS. I'm curious to see if they get used with this one or not.

maybe a bouncy seat, swing, excersaucer/jumperoo? Whatever your preference is on those. Just somewhere else to contain baby nearby.

Fftc: I’m a big fan of baby walkers in spite of all the research. Our house is one big open floor plan and giving dd the mobility to follow me mean I could go about the house and she would be content following along rather than freaking that I went out of sight. ... I was careful to make sure it was adjusted to fit her properly, and watched her development very closely, it didn’t slow her down at all and I would not hae wanted her developing any faster.

  • @jhjocelyn Agree about walkers. As long as you aren’t using them for prolonged periods it’s fine. Really, time in any baby-holding device like a jumper or Exersaucer should be limited to about 20 minutes, walkers included. The jumper and walker were invaluable for those times we needed to cook or eat or throw in laundry and DS needed entertained. I recommend getting ones with lots of bells and whistles to keep baby occupied. Also, savor the time they sit and play quietly sitting unsupported without crawling away...it’s a magical fleeting time that you will miss when they become mobile!  :p
  • So I'm hardcore anti baby sit up devices like jumpers, bumbos ect, right? But even as much as I am against them, even I would occasionally put my child in an exersaucer (we only had one cause my husband bought it without asking me) cause sometimes you just need to do a thing!!! I limited it to 15-20 minutes and made sure everyone in my house knew not to just stick baby in there and leave him.

My baby hated being swaddled so all our super cute swaddle stuff was never used or used once or twice just long enough to super piss off our kid :/

So much yes to having 2-3 mattress protectors, changing pad covers, and sheets! You do not want to mess around with not having a clean one when you need it. Although changing pad covers are the easiest to make do cause you can always just drape a towel or receiving blanket on the changing pad.
  • @Wishilivedinflorida

I told both my sisinlaws to enjoy the sotting still moments too! DD NEVER sat still! She was a roller mover from the get go, sitting came after, right on time, but by then she refused to stay in one place. Hence, my lover for the walker.  :D

  • DanyTargaryen DD did not like to be swaddled at all, so we never did! We spent a lot of money on swaddle pods but I just assumed all babes like to be swaddled.
  • And I don't think I saw this on here, but a carseat cover if you live somewhere cool - we got the JJ Cole one. We have harsh winters here and we thought it was great.
  • @SkilledSailor What about wipes (either disposable or cloth)? And I think someone mentioned it, but breast pump. Oh, and maybe a nursing cover - not necessary but possibly very nice to have, depending on your comfort level for nursing in public. Plus some of the little things - baby wash/shampoo, comb (might not need for a while), nail clippers, snot sucker, diaper cream, nipple cream, postpartum pads (obviously for you not baby, but relevant). It's nice to have something on hand for the early meconium poops - Vaseline, olive oil, or coconut oil. Somewhere to set baby down where they'll be safe and contained while you use the bathroom or get dressed or something - I think you said you'll have the PNP downstairs, so that's there, but maybe something for upstairs like a bouncy seat?

@treeofcheem Thanks to our many free registry boxes I have a decent stash of baby care samples and wipes. Insurance covers the breast pump (yay!) but I can't order it until third trimester. I did have a nursing cover on my must have list but took it off thinking maybe it wasn't really necessary. I think I'll put it back on though. I am out and about a lot for meetings and I'd really rather be covered. Thank you for your input! It's nice to hear what others consider good items to have.
  • @SkilledSailor for nursing covers I would look at ones with structure/boning so they have a little gap to see what you are doing hands free (very helpful in the beginning). If this feature doesn't appeal to you then a muslin receiving blanket works awesome as well (I would tie the corners so it didn't fall off).
  • I had one of the nursing covers with a hoop last time and also used a clip strap I made with a muslin blanket. Both were fine. I was talking to a mama using one of the stretchy ones this weekend and I really really liked that it goes all the way around you. Keeps little feet from kicking things off and covers your back if you’re lifting your shirt (instead of pulling down the neckline.) I could see that some LOs might not like being so contained but I want to try one this time.

@mrsman2018 Yes, totally agree on the carseat cover. So helpful with an infant in cold weather! When you register for one make sure it's a shower cap style cover. The ones that places material behind your child are not safe as they add extra bulk between the seat and baby.
  • nackienackie member
We got a car seat cover and never used it. We had so many knit baby blankets from friends/family that I just tucked those over baby in the car seat during the winter
  • I got the JJ Cole Polar Bundle Me, but for the stroller (not car seat, because it goes behind baby and isn't safe). It was awesome this winter when we wanted to exercise, walk, or needed to walk dogs for energy reasons (they normally just use our yard for the potty, but don't get much play time in winter).

It's like a solar grade sleeping bag for my son, and grows with them until they're about 4, so awesome! For anyone in a city that gets cold, and normally walks or uses public transit com stroller-it's a must-have. For anyone that will want to walk or run with baby in colder months, it's a probable need. Keeps wind off-so I only have to put a thin coat and socks on him-and there's space to tuck a blanket in there. Avoids stuffing unhappy kid into a ton of layers of clothes in a stroller. Mostly only useful when baby is no longer in bucket seat.
