New to all this...overwhelmed

Thought it couldn't hurt to try to find a support system of women who know what I'm going through. TTC for 20 months. First appt with RE this week. My OB had told me all was fine after labs and 2 US but I went ahead and set up with RE who found 10 cysts on my left ovary and 14 on my right and a cyst in my cervix. DH counts were normal but the low side of normal. I go back for another US soon to check my follicles then an HSG next month to see if my tubes are patent. I'm just so afraid I will never have a child of my own and do not know bwhat to expect. Any advice or encouragement appreciated.

Re: New to all this...overwhelmed

  • Welcome to the board. This place has been a really good source of encouragement for me since I joined and I know that you'll receive the same as well. I'm sorry to hear about your cysts. I found it pretty strange that your OB didn't mention about the cysts to you, but it's good that your RE had found them. GL on your next us and HSG!
  • Thank you! It is strange my OB didn't find them. Glad I went with my gut and went ahead to RE.

  • Cysts suck! But the can leave as quickly as they appear, usually without any intervention, they are so strange. I also think it's super weird your OB didn't mention the cysts! Some people can be more prone to them than others and going through 2 full IVF rounds I've had my share of hang ups form cysts.. but usually are good for the next cycle I've found. Glad you listened to your gut REs are so great! Good luck

  • Cysts do suck! And my RE is amazing so that helps a ton! Thanks for the encouragement!
  • Welcome! REs are typically much more thorough than OBs as far as testing goes. I was told cysts on your cervix are pretty common and benign. I hope the ones on your ovaries go away quickly and you get some answers!

  • @nurserin07 Hope your HSG goes well!! Take extra strength tylenol before hand if you can. :) Sorry about your cysts, were you taking Clomid by chance? I know the only time I got them was after taking medicines to help stimulate my ovaries. Luckily, like everyone else said, they go away pretty fast. Some doctors will give birth control as well to help if needed :)

  • Welcome! Wow, that is a lot of cysts. I know how hard this is. I am also prone to cysts. This month I had six and had to abandon an IUI cycle again. In my experience, being prone to cysts means it takes a lot longer to go through treatment because Clomid tends to make the cysts worse (and they won’t go forward with Clomid or IUI unless your cysts are gone or very small). Since November, I have only been able to do one IUI round (my cycles are only three weeks) because of cysts or over stimulating on Clomid. I might mentally brace for a long journey (though hopefully it won’t be the case for you) because sometimes they take more than a month to disappear. But they do say that simple cysts don’t prevent pregnancies, so that is good.
  • @nurserin07 Welcome although I'm sorry that you had to join us.

I'm so so so so very happy you made the decision to go see a specialist and leave the ob. So you have many cysts on your ovaries. Are you saying that you have been diagnosed with pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome)? That's usually the case and it's usually many follicles showing on each ovary at once.

Anyway, I have great news for you. Many many many women have this diagnosis. I am one of them and there is still a great chance of conceiving with a little help. MH and I tried naturally for about 5-6 years before we knew about the one year rule lol so you are way ahead!

Stick around and learn a lot. These boards are full of great women with a lot of knowledge and so much love to pass around. I repeat, learn all that you can about your blood work, u/s results, and any condition. It will go along way in this process and help you to stay sane by being educated.

I had to explain to MH last night when he heard me say that I'm on Infertility boards that IF doesn't mean sterile lol. It just means we need help for whatever reason. Technology has advanced so much nowadays. Hang in there!

@kristimh80 thanks for the advice on the Tylenol,  I will keep that in mind! We haven't been on clomid yet. thanks for the encouragement!
  • @scully127 I am trying to brace myself because I am feeling like this will be a long journey for us which is discouraging but I am hoping the RE might give us some hope. Thanks for the encouragement!
  • @suzycupcake my RE isn't calling it PCOS yet but says he is suspicious fo it.  I have 28 day cycles and all labs are normal so the cysts were surprising for us all. I am trying to ask lots of questions and be as knowledgeable as I can about everything but it is so overwhelming. I go back Tuesday to see if I have a mature follicle and then hopefully the HSG next month to see if my tubes are open. Pray for good news and thank you for the encouragement! It helps knowing there another people dealing with the same struggle as me.
  • Of course I will pray for you @nurserin07! Absolutely <3 Maybe have them do labs again to followup since things can change. I hope you get some much needed answers soon. See ya around :)

  • Welcome! Hopefully your HSG will give you some answers. And good for you for trusting your gut. I have gone to a ton of shitty doctors so sometimes when you know something isn't right you have to bounce to get the answers. Once all your testing is done hopefully you will have a plan of action for your next cycle.

  • @mcgeeva thanks for the encouragement! I hope we get answers soon!
  • My advice is just to try and stay positive. My husband and I tried to conceive for 2 1/2 long years. After 3 failed IUIs and a failed fresh IVF, I started thinking maybe it wasn't meant to be. We tried once more with one of the frozen embryos from our first IVF cycle and I'm now 9 weeks pregnant. It's a difficult journey, physically and emotionally. But you have plenty of lovely ladies on here to support you!
