STM- difference in symptoms?

I searched our board and couldn’t find a thread that answered my questions:

My pregnancy before DD was a loss (blighted ovum) so I’m a bit paranoid this time around. Any STM who feel different from their first? I don’t remember having lower back pains this early with DD. I’m somewhere between 5 weeks and 5 weeks and two days but I had a lot of lower back pain (not crazy severe just uncomfortable) last week and **possibly TMI** I had very very light pink discharge Friday (not like a lot, just if I really tried to look). Again, I’m sure it’s nothing because my cramps are not really cramps, just like almost stretching feeling but my u/s isn’t until March 14 so the wait is killing me. On the upside my pregnancy brain is crazy and I’ve had nausea at least once a day since last Monday, as well as breast tenderness. Wanted to see if any STMs were in my same shoes.

Re: STM- difference in symptoms?

  • I’ve had different symptoms with all three pregsnancies (or the same symptoms at different stages). With my first I don’t remember any back pain/cramping early, but had pretty significant bleeding at 10 weeks for about 5 days. My second I had morning sickness earlier, but it was twins. With this one, I’ve had occasional spotting and cramping since 5 weeks.

  • My symptoms seem to be tracking almost identical for my first, which surprises me. I’ve always heard that each pregnancy is different but apparently my body only has one response.
  • This pregnancy is different than my first by a lot. I’m so nauseous and I never was with my daughter. I can’t even think about food...woof! And I’m cramping which I don’t remember at all with DD. I’ll feel much better when I go to the doctor this week.

  • I had one loss before my DS and 3 losses last year. I had extreme nausea and morning sickness with my DS. Also breast tenderness. With my four losses, I had breast tenderness early on but quickly lost all pregnancy symptoms by week 6-8. So I knew those weren't viable.  This time, I feel extreme nausea, tender breast and crazy dreams. So I'm taking it as a good sign. I feel miserable but very thankful. My first ultrasound is Tuesday so... Fingers crossed.
  • With my DD I had absolutely no pregnancy symptoms until about 8/9 weeks. At that point I had severe MS and occasional cramping/stretching. This go around I’ve been nauseated but no vomiting since about 3 weeks and have had noticeable cramping and stretching pains since around 3-4 weeks as well. I’ve also been extremely moody, irritable, and weepy! I find it pretty interesting how different the pregnancies are already and I’m only about 5 weeks
  • I had no morning sickness at all with DD or DS, and this time around I’m nauseous all day every day.  I know every pregnancy can be very different, so I’m just praying the nausea goes away soon!!
  • The MS has been worse this time around. With DS i didn’t throw up. I have lower back pain with this one and insomnia with this one too.
  • @jennybean80 how early did you get a BFP with the twins? I had insomnia last night and freaked myself out about possibly being further along than I think (LMP was only 3 days and 4 days late and I seriously thought I was pregnant before AF came, had ALL the symptoms and I've never been that late without being PG AND BFP was at exactly 3 weeks, which has never happened with  my other two pregnancies), and my family keeps joking it's twins because of my early symptoms and early BFP. I was sick at what would be 2 weeks and 6 days.

@tinattt23 that's got to be reassuring for you though, at least you know what to expect.

@estellegetty @ashin121 @arrowst I have to say it makes me feel much better that I'm not alone. Praying we all have great first appts!!!!

  • Yes, I feel different than my first pregnancy. I only threw up once and was never nauseous last time. This time, I have already thrown up 2x and feel sick every day.

Same while I was reading your post. I felt like I needed could have written it! :) Best wishes to you!
  • My first pregnancy, in retrospect, seemed a lot easier.  Lots of fatigue, some nausea, spotting, food aversions.  This time: Lots of nausea, cramping, have to eat constantly to not throw up.  I'm wondering if it gets harder with age?
  • @tinattt23 my first two pregnancies were identical. This one is completely different. Just when I think I know what to expect  :D

  • @jengibre_zorro That's exactly what I was thinking too. I know it's only been two year, I'm feeling like how could it have forgotten? The first time felt easier somehow. Recently I've been exhausted but unable to sleep, I'm sure having a toddler isn't helping but I definitely feel like my anxiety and symptoms are way worse this time around.

  • It's been a while, and I'm only 6 weeks, but seems pretty similar so far except I have major breast tenderness this time and I don't remember that from the first time (I had it some the second time, but was still BFing baby #1 so everything was muddled). My second pregnancy I was horribly sick with a cold right before I realized I was pregnant so I don't really remember the early symptoms and the first time I didn't really know what to look for.
  • First time around I had pretty bad MS, dry heaving all the time and I was so exhausted I’d fall asleep at work.

This time I’ve been slightly nauseous, but not terrible so far, exhausted, but not fall asleep at work exhausted, and crampy all freaking day. Plus the constipation followed by diarrhea every 3 days has been a weird new thing.

Definitely feels like like an entirely new experience.

  • I'm having less nausea, I'm more exhausted, the breast tenderness was way worse the first time and just started to kick in this pregnancy at around 8w,  the moodiness and weepiness has been about the same.  *TW I had a loss between DD and this pregnancy where I felt very little symptoms, so I'm also over thinking every symptom this time*
  • First time I had morning sickness and vomiting throughout the whole pregnancy and intense sense of smell.  This time I mostly have breast tenderness and only slight nausea so far, no vomiting or strong smells yet.  I am 6 weeks 5 days.  With both pregnancies I felt extremely bloated.

I also notice my anxiety is much higher this time around.  Counting down to my US on 3/7.
  • My first pregnancy, in retrospect, seemed a lot easier.  Lots of fatigue, some nausea, spotting, food aversions.  This time: Lots of nausea, cramping, have to eat constantly to not throw up.  I'm wondering if it gets harder with age?

that's what I keep thinking...but my youngest is only three and this is so much harder this time around! I had no MS with my first, and some here and there with the others, but this is constant and hard to even function. and I am so exhausted all the time. people close to me keep saying it's because I have four kids at home, but last time I had three and I did not feel this way. I know it is all for a good cause, but geez this is rough. ;)
  • This pregnancy is pretty identical to my pregnancy with DD, *TW loss* but very different from my last pregnancy which ended in MC at 8 weeks. I'm pretty much always nauseous to some degree and I'm always hungry but I also hate all food. It's reminding me why I originally was going to let DD be an only child. lol. With my last pregnancy I had nausea, but it was really mild most days and I still liked most food. My levels never got very high though so that would explain why my symptoms never progressed (levels at 8 weeks 6 days was the same as levels at 5 weeks in this pregnancy). As far as back pain, I actually had lower back pain for the first couple weeks of this pregnancy. I never had that with either of my last 2 pregnancies that I can remember. I had the same "cramps" you mentioned as well and it was definitely just stretching. I actually felt like it was a good sign since I never had them last time. It seems like my body is responding to this pregnancy which is really exciting.
  • @acciocoffee I feel like a weirdo but I'm happy every time I throw up. The MS comes in waves but just when I feel like "Oh man, I'm good...this looks delicious" I feel the urge to puke my life away so pretty good I think.

@drb2424 I’m also finding that my anxiety is way higher this pregnancy. I was so calm with my last pregnancy, I didn’t have a care in the world. This pregnancy I’ve been very anxious. I already had my first appointment and the anxiety has eased slightly, but it’s definitely still there.

    edited because words.
  • My main symptoms with DS were sore breasts and zero appetite. This time around, I've got everything going and at full speed. Back pain. Hip pain. Nausea. Exhaustion. Insomnia. Bloating. Swollen feet. And it seems like it all kicked in about 3.5 weeks in.

  • My first pregnancy I had nausea and MS really bad that I found it so difficult to get out of bed! I had a very strong sense of smell and aversion to ALL meat.

This time around I’m quite worried as I started with nausea and was sick once but that seems to have completed disappeared.
I still feel bloated and frequently uriniating but apart from those 2 things I feel normal.

I had an early scan at 6w and LO had a heartbeat but I am finding it hard to stay positive now because of the decrease in symptoms  :(

@Smallangel they say the chance of mc is substantially lower after you hear the heart beat. You're probably one of the lucky ones who gets an easy second pregnancy

  • I have been so nauseous this time, I didn’t have that at all last time. Other than that I haven’t had much other symptoms.
  • @mrsmartinez16 Thank you! I really am hoping so for my case... I’m probably just over-reacting but will be able to relax a bit better after 12 weeks x

With both my boys I never had morning sickness.  Now my breast tenderness is subsiding.  Some vivid dreams though.  But that's about it - I wish for something to tell me "still pregnant, everything is alright!"  My appt isn't until 3/21.

  • I don’t remember what symptoms I had with my ectopic, but pregnancies #2 and 3 were pretty much identical. This time is similar but worse. My symptoms started way sooner and have been causing me to be way more useless than I was in my previous pregnancies (which is saying something).

Anyway, I would say try not to worry. Every pregnancy is different.

  • I can’t decide if the nausea is worse this time or if it just feels worse because I can’t just curl up on the couch and sleep all day like last time. This dang toddler. Doesn’t he understand that the fridge makes mommy want to puke? Yet he still wants to eat. Needy kid.  :D
  • @dunkindecaf I feel totally useless too.

@tinattt23 YEs toddlers. DS will say, “but I don’t want your tummy to hurt” and get the wining is killing me!
  • Ughhh the toddlers. Preparing toddler food is the absolute worst. And they want me to play with them and everything. It's the worst.

  • @mrsmartinez16 Sorry for the late reply, my phone doesn't show me when I have notifications. I found out with my twins one day before I was due for my blood draw (IVF), so right around when my period would have been due. And my symptoms with them weren't really any more severe that with my older son, just the morning sickness showed up earlier - around 5 weeks with them, and more like 6-7 with him.

  • I know every birth is different, but for mamas who tore with their first, did you also tear with your 2nd+ child?
The recovery for my first was miserable, and took MONTHS, not weeks like everyone says, and is my biggest concern with this baby. I think DS was 4 months old before I could sit down without sucking air through my teeth.

  • @concreteayngel same here!! I hated PP so much. It was so hard
  • edited March 2018
@mrsmartinez16  I found out I was pregnant with my twins exactly 4 weeks after my last period.  I had tested a couple days earlier and it was negative. We had no clue it was twins until my first appointment at 8 weeks when they did an ultrasound.

Since pregnancy tests detect hcg, it’s possible that you just have higher hcg levels this time.  Since hcg levels vary so much from pregnancy to pregnancy, there really isn’t a way to tell if it’s twins based on levels.

EDIT because I kind of sounded like an ass in the original post.

  • @concreteayngel I had a similar experience with my first birth. The second time I made sure to ask the dr over and over if I was tearing and she helped me go slowly with my last few pushes, told me when to back off etc and I only had a first degree tear! I was in normal underwear at a family music makers class with my big kid a week later. I couldn’t believe how easy my recovery was.

  • @DunkinDecaf that’s awesome! I will definitely ask my OB if she can help me with that when I see her next week. Thank you!!
