  • Speaking of food. Reading conflicting things on temp for things like steak when pregnant. The food safety thing on Bump app says cook to 145 degrees, other places I've been reading well done, including in the food safety handout my midwife's office gave me. Personally I hate a well done steak and to DH that's just about the worst thing someone can do to a piece of meat, so does anyone know what really is the safe temp?  I'm married to a total carnivore and he just about cried last night cooking my dinner.  I also noticed he pulled his smoker out of storage to start getting it ready for the season and I'm sure he's going to ask if I can even eat anything he smokes on it.
  • @runsomewhere I would definitely eat that!

@noideawhatshesdoing I’ve been told all well done. It sucks, but it’s the safest I guess. If you know you have good quality meat I would think you’d be fine eating something not 100% well done.

my question: before I got pregnant, I was a certain weight. Got pregnant, lost 4 pounds in the first trimester, and have since gained back the 4 lbs plus 4 more pounds. So does that mean my pregnancy weight gain has been 4 lbs or 8 lbs?

    TTC History:

  • @runsomewhere I would definintely eat the tacos with the guac but like, not sure about a pizza underneath. I am pretending its not there.

@noideawhatshesdoing I feel like whatever you are supposed to have your steak cooked to to kill ecoli is acceptable, which appears to be 160 (170 is well done). I know a local burger place around here after having an e coli scare was required to heat all meat to 155, so I suppose the VT Dept of Ag thought that was acceptable. I usually play it safe on the food recs but honestly, if it kills e. coli, what else is there to be alive, right?

    I could be wrong though.
  • @noideawhatshesdoing I’m not a big meat eater but I wouldn’t worry about whole pieces of meat being undercooked if you know they’re quality. Ground meat is a different story, that I would do well done to temp even though I would typically do less.

This is me too.  I’ll eat a medium steak like I normally do, especially if it’s cooked at home or at a reputable place.  Burgers have got to be well done though.  I won’t touch one that’s even a little pink, especially while pregnant.
  • @rachelsogo I’d say you’ve gained 4lbs total?

I had my anatomy scan today and they said the baby is 11oz (I’m 19+4) is that normal?? According to the Bump app he should be just over 8  :D
  • @samjjorgensen I always found TB app estimates waaaaay off from what my twins measured in my last pregnancy! Also, US weight measurements are estimates and have an +/- error margin (I think of 20%) so t
if it was overestimated by 20% for you, that would put babe at 8.8oz so that works!

  • Thanks ladies on the food temp rec. We've been doing well done, and it's just so, ugh. But I guess it's just a short window to be restrictive anyway, so I'll keep playing it safe.
  • @samjjorgensen when I had my anatomy scan for my first, he was measuring MUCH larger than he was supposed to at that time and was a 9lb 5oz baby, even though they swore as we went along that he "felt average sized" lol. But that's just one anecdote I don't remember how it was with my last so I can't say if it means anything really.
  • Meh, I hadn't even thought about the whole meat temp thing and I'm not going to start now.

@MichelleAG05 same. I didn’t even know about it..

also, @rachelsogo I measure weight gain as anything over your original weight so +4
  • So anyone had the flu while pregnant? The epidemic in Florida is nuts. I did get a flu shot last week at my appt, but now my DH is heavily congested, coughing, and has a low grade fever. I sent him to urgent care to get a flu test. I'm super paranoid about getting it, even though I usually have a strong immune system.
  • @coco305 I had a cold at around 7 weeks. So. Freaking. Miserable. For the record, I had not had a cold that bad in 6 years. I usually get one every year for like 24 hours then I'm done. So when my DH cam home with a cold and wanted to sleep downstairs, I laughed and boasted about my amazing immune system. 2 days later, I had the same cold... I hope your DH doesn't have the flu but you have the vaccine so hopefully that helps. Quarantine him either way, lol! I didn't get a shot because I work from home and I'm less exposed but I'm ready for this flu season to be OVER.
  • Kind of a corollary to the weight gain question-I have no idea what I weighed “before” getting pregnant, just what I weighed at my first appointment at 7w. Is that my starting weight or should I take a few pounds off assuming I had already gained some/been bloated at that point?

Ive been having my steak medium as opposed to medium rare as I like it so that’s been my compromise for the babies. I’m also confident in the meat quality at the places I eat though so slightly less concerned about it. I’ll never eat a well done steak that’s a freaking crime
  • @coco305 it takes 2 weeks for the flu shot to reach its effectiveness. So handwash handwash handwash
  • My husband thinks he had the flu this weekend but so far my son and I have not had it. I am so paranoid. I have been upping my dose of vitamin C. I am interested to hear how you got through the flu if you had it while pregnant too.
  • @coco305 my friend had the flu while pregnant. She had the flu shot and her case of the flu was not as severe as her kids who did not have the flu shot.

@devilcat139 I go by that first weigh in at the doctors. I don’t usually weigh myself at home so I have no idea what I would have been “before” it’s close enough I think.
  • Thanks for the reminder about ground beef. I don't eat a ton of steak but I do enjoy a burger. DH likes to cook his "still mooing" and mine end up anywhere between medium rare and medium well depending on how patient he is that day. Will definitely start insisting on well done.

@samjjorgensen At my growth scan US just shy of 16w, the tech told me baby is 6 oz... but the bump said less than 3.5 oz. That makes me nervous because my family has a history of big babies and 16w is early to have a baby measuring almost double... So I'm glad to hear the bump is way off (although I just googled it and 16 weeks seems to be 3.5 oz everywhere, ugh).  However, they pushed my due date back 13 days at my dating US (I have irregular periods so we knew LMP might not be right), and at the 16w US baby was measuring 6 days ahead but they won't change my due date.

@rachelsogo I'm in the same boat, I lost 6lbs and only put 3lb back on.. so have I gained 3lb or am I still down 3lbs?  I'm going with down 3lbs because that gives me more to gain later on lol.

@kissableviv I am the same way! I rarely get colds and if I do its like 2-3 days max. So far this pregnancy I have had 1 cold that lasted 10 days and was sooo bad and I had an upper respiratory infection that lasted 2 weeks and I thought I was going to die.

@coco305 Like someone else said it takes your body 2 weeks to build immunity from the flu shot so it's not effective for you right now... keep your husband faaaaar away.

Sorry for the novel, just trying to catch up!
  • Totally forgot about the 2-week vaccine activation period. Can the season just be done? Ugh!
@devilcat139 I didn't even own a scale before getting pregnant, but because I was getting ready for the wedding I know how much I weighted and it's what I ended up weighing at the doctor's at 6w. So I'm going with that weight! I think even if it's off by 1-2 lbs (my doctscake is effed up anyways...) It's probably no big deal. I'm actually up 11lbs already! But that's ok because I'm almost half way, although there's plenty time for me to out on weight quickly... luckily I think 2-3 lbs are on my chest! Yay! Haha.
  • @coco305 I had the flu shot prior to getting pregnant and still ended up with a light case of it. Also, got the stomach flu and landed my behind in the ER 2 weeks ago. It was not fun...DH got his flu shot in between my 2 cases and didn't get the flu at all...

Is anyone else waking up at 3am STARVING? It's like a frantic wake up, I need to eat feeling.

  • @noideawhatshesdoing I usually eat my steak medium rare and I've been cooking it to medium/medium well lately- I just cant do well done.  it stinks especially since my body keeps rejecting poultry- I feel like beef and fish is all I eat.

Can we talk about having to eat a beautiful tuna steak well done :( UGHHHH.  Although I'm a totally bad mom and had a tuna steak medium the other night.  A friend of mine from high school didnt follow any of the food rules- legit just ate as she normally did (lunch meats, sushi, etc) and her babe came out 100% fine and never gets sick.  Not saying I agree with it- just throwing it out there.
  • @zombiehoohaa I haven’t had that problem yet this time but I did last pregnancy! I always try to make sure I eat a snack before bed and then if I start waking up hungry I put snacks in my nightstand.

  • @moguippy yeah I feel ya.  I had food poisoning once and it was so horrific, I couldn't imagine getting it again let alone while pregnant.  And my view is, there are so many other things that can harm your baby- why risk it? Yeah it sucks having to adjust your diet but its 9 months, get over it.  Needless to say- her and I dont speak much anymore since high school (12 years ago, oh god- 12 years, I just got a "feel old" moment)
  • Off topic from everyone else but 19 weeks here and still struggling with loss of appetite and food not tasting good. I am loosing my hair in massive amounts and my Dr wants me to try and get biotin in natural food sources so he prescribed me zofran and said it should help those problems. Anyone else take zofran for this purpose after the first trimester nausea started to subside, and did it help?
  • @kbernal2021 I took zofran in the first trimester for nausea. I would say it probably helped my appetite but I don't know if that was just from being less nauseous.  However, what I really came here to say is Zofran made me not poop. Like ever. And that was worse than the nausea. I was taking fiber gummies and still nothing. I ended up having to take regular colace to get things moving even a little bit. I ended up stopping the Zofran because the constipation was so bad.  Sorry if this is TMI but I want you to know unlike me who didn't realize until it was so bad.  Hopefully it doesn't happen to you.  Good luck!
  • kissableviv just a heads up - I never got the flu shot before my first pregnancy because of low exposure and it's typically not the right strain for my area etc, but OB told me with my first getting the flu shot during pregnancy, especially for summer births, is more about getting the antibodies to the baby who can't get a flu shot before flu season starts NEXT fall.

I eat sushi/poke in moderation and eat medium steak and burgers. The food "rules" you still see online are totally antiquated.

You're also significantly more likely to get sick from contaminated produce, especially greens and berries. I'm not saying you should stay away from these foods but the dated "food rule" stuff drives me nuts.

  • @gingerbride26 thank you! That might make sense but I read this vaccine is 30% effective this year...doesn't look like much to me. I'm definitely not an anti vax but have never gotten a flu shot in my life because I've always been super skeptical on this one. I know pregnancy makes it different but I think at this point I'm not getting the shot. I know it's been a bad season in general, and in California too, in general I'm hoping that the baby won't be exposed to super cold temperatures given where we live + he won't be in daycare until he's 18 months.

Basically, this is to say I'm probably naive but I'm taking my chances and doing me:) literally everyone I know who got the flu shot this year still got equally sick - though I know I can't base effectiveness just off of my group of friends, lol!

I'm eating deli meat...I think the chances are equally as bad as fresh produce, poultry, and eggs. All of these are on the list of "dirtiest foods" or most likely to carry listeria, ecoli, salmonella, and the likes. I only really eat turkey twice a week and always microwave it plus the very occasional meat and cheese plate that I make myself with packaged meats from trusted sources. I feel like I can just as easily get sick from a bag of spinach.
  • @runsomewhere I have seen more recalls on lettuce in the past few years than anything else
  • I think alfalfa sprouts are ALWAYS an issue and apparently cantaloupe has a bad track record too!
  • @moguippy thank you for the heads up! I'm reluctant to take it because in the first 17 weeks my nausea was SO bad but I decided to ride it out and while I still struggle sometimes with it it's nowhere near what it was. So I have that mentality like why start it now when I've made it through the worst.
  • kissableviv i completely agree with you! I never got the flu shot before my kid - I also am not anti-vax but the flu shot is a little different because there are just so many strains and they can't include them all, and it mutates so dang fast it's not always effective.  Agree if you are in a warmer area, you work from home, and you're not doing daycare for 18 months all sounds super logical.  Big proponent for "you do you" - I'm in CT, I don't get any paid maternity leave so we need daycare at 6 weeks, and the drs were so pushy i just decided not to fight them on it

moguippy  I almost said something about the lettuce but bit my tongue.  Honestly - every country has different guidelines for restrictions during pregnancy - I'm just going to say each woman just needs to "do you" and make her own educated decisions. First time around I was a bit more strict, this time and after more research I'm deciding which guidelines I'm good with and which feel like overly cautious just in case something could maybe happen.

  • @kbernal2021 I'm sorry I can't offer any advice but I definitely hope you find something that works and makes you feel better!
  • Just seconding what @moguippy has said about the zofran and not pooping. That was my cause of constipation this last week and half. I was taking zofran to assist with the flu symptoms. Man, does it f you up!! I'd rather have explosive butt than the constipation pains.
@kbernal2021 I'm sorry I don't have any help with the lack of appetite however, fx you get to eating something that taste good and makes you want to actually eat.

  • @zombiehoohaa my problem is it's so sporadic. I've had a complete meat aversion my entire pregnancy and then sometimes chicken sounds amazing so I eat it and it's the best thing of my life so I assume I'm good and the next day try it again only to be sick from it. One thing never taste good longer than one time unfortunately, the baby is sucking it all out of me so I'm hoping the zofran can help with appetite but if it makes me constipated I may have to weigh the 2 options and see what's worse. Thanks for the help ladies
