April 2018 Moms

Fell down the stairs

January has not been my month. I’ve been completely MIA from the board because 2 weeks ago I got violently sick and ended up in the hospital for 4 days with severe dehydration, low potassium, spiked fever etc. It was the first time I was ever away from DS overnight and the whole experience was super scary. I’ve never been so sick in my life.

It’s taken me a good 2 weeks to feel better and then yesterday, I fell down a flight of stairs! I fell onto my back so hard I couldn’t breathe and then started feeling tightening in my belly. It was absolutely terrifying. My doctor had me go straight to labor and delivery again. I’m finally home and in a lot of pain but grateful that baby is okay. (They watched me for a while and I’m on modified bed for a few days. They were initially concerned about trauma to the placenta but my tests thankfully came back okay but they also said that sometimes things don’t happen immediately so I have to go straight back to the hospital with any bleeding, contractions, fluids etc.) Anyone have any  tips for my back? I can’t do heat they said. Just ice and Tylenol is all they said and I can honestly barely walk. I’m covered in bruises.

I’m feeling super guilty that I’ve put this baby through so much stress, medicines and tests. Trying to remember though that this all could have been so much worse and I just need to relax.

Okay end of my pity party. :-(

Re: Fell down the stairs

  • I have no advice regarding your back pain but just wanted to say I’m so sorry you’ve had such a rough start to the year. If you can still barely walk, do you have a lot of family support to help with DS? I hope you are able to rest and heal quickly, and that it is smooth sailing from here on out!

  • @lindsye thank you! Well to make matters worse, DH is away on a business trip in Thailand. He’s finally on his way home today but it was all even scarier being alone. My dad was with me in the hospital and my mom was with DS. I have a babysitter coming today and will be here most of the day in about 2 hours to help with DS and then my dad will come this evening but again on my own night/morning. DH will be home tomorrow so hopefully I’ll be okay. Grateful to have family near by because I’m feeling super guilty having DS in front of the Tv this morning because I can’t play with him and can’t get up really.
  • So sorry this has all happened to you this month!! I slipped and fell on my icy driveway in December and while thankfully I didn’t get injured I definitely understand the guilty feelings you’re having!! Unfortunately very little is in our control... best you can do for baby (and you!) is rest up. I hope you feel better ASAP!!!

  • I am so sorry you've had a rough month. Sickness has been crazy this year. Don't blame yourself or feel guilty. Sometimes there isn't much you can do about these type of things. Hope your back heals quickly.

  • Omg I'm sorry!! How awful and scary. I'm surprised they said no heat at all. With my first pregnancy I had terrible sciatic nerve pain, couldn't even walk. My Dr said I could use low heat for so many minutes at a time and honestly it was a godsend! I also was allowed tylenol with codiene but not sure what the views on that are now. I didn't take it a lot maybe twice but it helped a lot more than regular tylenol. Hang in there!! Wish I had more advice. Rest up and try to take it easy, know that's easier said than done with a little one to take care of.
  • Stairs are such a fear of mine while pregnant (or while lo is learning to master them). I fell down half a flight, on my butt, early on and was scared enough. But, this far along, poor mama! I'm glad baby is alright and hope you find relief soon. I was complaining about my back to a friend and she said her Dr said a rice sock is OK during pregnancy (maybe because it's smaller then a heating pad and cools down rather then staying a constant high temperature?). Maybe that could be an option?

  • How awful.  I'm so sorry to hear this.  I'm glad you and your LO are ok for the most part.  I'm surprised that won't let you use a low heat to help with your back.  Have you looked into a massager?   Since you can't use heat maybe a portable massager will help.

  • no ideas on back but I also hope you start feeling better. no need to feel guilty sometimes life is hard and we make it harder by putting unnecessary stress on ourselves to be the best. I hope the last 3 months of your pregnancy are better then January.
  • I'm so sorry to hear that you've had such a challenging month so far.. praying things continue to heal for you! When the pain settles down.. maybe you could try seeing a chiropractic or doing acupuncture? I wish I had more insight to give you but hopefully you can take it easy for the next few days.
  • I'm so sorry you have been through so many scares!  I am really glad your baby is ok though, the human body is amazing at protecting the womb.  I think unfortunately all you can do for pain is Tylenol and hot and cold compresses.  If you use a heating pad, be careful you keep it on low so as to not raise your abdominal temp.  FX you heal quickly!

  • I feel so bad for you! How horrifying. I'm glad baby is okay and that you are recovering. Can you do a warm (not hot) bath or something to soak and take the pressure off your body? Glad your parents were able to help you out and that your H is on his way home. Hang in there! Things can only go up from here right (Knocking on wood)

I’m so sorry you’ve been going through so much! I can’t imagine! I’m relieved to hear baby is okay. Aside from ice/Tylenol, maybe an epsom salt bath, one of those menthol rubs, and a pregnancy chiropractor? I’ve had really good luck with a chiro this pregnancy after a horse I was riding fell heels over head and I hit the ground pretty hard. FX you heal quickly!
  • Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about your sickness and the fall! Are you able to take it easy the next few days? I hope you're feeling better soon!

  • oh my gosh, what a terrible terrible start to the year. I'm hoping things from here are smooth sailing. I'm so relieved you have some support nearby with family and that DH is coming home soon, but to go through that alone, that must have been so hard. My only advice is chocolate or ice cream applied liberally, but that's my solution to everything. I hope you can find some relief soon. Thinking of you this week.
  • Oh no I am so sorry to hear this!  I hope things get better for you soon.
  • Gah! @julzy! just here to say I'm sorry and that I hope you're feeling better!

  • @julzy that's so scary! I'm so sorry you've been going through all of this!
  • So scary! Atleast hubby will be home soon and he can help out. A couple of mornings with TV isn't going to hurt anyone. Self care is so important at this stage, you got this girl.
  • Good god you poor thing! Fx you start to feel better soon.

  • I'm so sorry you went through all of this! Being away from your son overnight for the first time probably just added more stress. I have no advice on the back, but I hope it heals quickly. Thank goodness the baby is okay and your H is coming home soon.

  • Oh my how scary that must have been!!! And your DH is away. I am so glad you and baby are okay, don’t feel guilty you can’t control these things and you are doing everything you can. I fell down a flight of stairs way back when I bought one of those donut things. It helped my ever so hurting butt and did elevate some on my back as well
  • @julzy - what a rotten patch you went through! So glad your LO is okay! My OB said Salon Pas were okay to use, and they help me with muscle aches. Glad your family was able to help some and that YH will be home soon! FX you feel better soon.

  • So sorry to hear this and hope everything will be okay for you and LO. I don’t have any advice; hopefully time will alleviate some of the pain and you can get back into a normal groove. Most of my ideas assume some sort of mobility (like walking, stretching, etc) so it might just take time and patience :-( hopefully all our good thoughts help!
  • @julzy I am glad you guys are ok! This has been a really rough start to the year for you. I will hope it gets a lot better for you from here on out!

When I was pregnant with DS, I fell twice in two weeks straight into my stomach. Once was UP the stairs because I tripped on my cargo pants strings. The very next week, I tripped over computer cords that were jumbled on the floor and landed on the front/side of my belly.

Both resulted in L&D trips. So i am glad you went and that baby is fine!!
  • Oh my goodness, how scary! I am hopeful that February turns out so much better for you, you deserve it. I hope that you can find some relief and feel better soon! This might be old school but what about a hot water bottle with warm water instead of hot water?

  • This is one of my biggest fears. I am a clutz and have fallen down stairs more than once, not pregnant though.

Most of my suggestions have been mentioned, chiropractor, or bath. I don't know how bruised your back is but could your Husband or a professional give you a good massage? My husband is terrible at massages that's why I suggest the professional.
  • No suggestions, but im so sorry!
  • Eek what an experience! I hope you feel better soon.
  • Thinking about you today. How are you feeling?
  • Sorry your still in a lot of pain. I am glad baby is doing well though.
  • Oh @julzy I'm so sorry it hasn't been easier. I know it's a relief at least that the baby is ok after the fall and you're on your way to releasing some of the guilt, I just wish you didn't have to stress about childcare or were in pain. I'm really hoping the massage helps relieve some of that pain. <<<hugs>>>
  • I am so sorry you're going through all of this!! What a rough month!  Once your back has healed a little, I would HIGHLY recommend going to the chiropractor so he/she can realign any issues in your pelvis and back that the fall may have caused- everything moves so easily with the relaxin in our systems right now. That will help with the pain after any bruising/swelling has healed and will make sure your pelvis hasn't moved out of the ideal alignment for delivery.  Prayers that things start looking up for you!!

None of what happened was your fault. The main thing is that you are both OK. The carpet on my stairs is super slippy! My son, other half and me included have slipped down them (I was pregnant with this little one). My poor son hit his back and bottom and I managed to slip as gracefully as I could! It's the scariest thing hurting yourself/getting sick when you are pregnant. I remember I had swine flu when I was pregnant with my boy!
Definitely go for a massage. It will calm the nerves as well as do wonders for your back. All the best!!!
