So, I grew up in California,  which obviously skews the outdoor-ness of birthdays throughout the year (and I was born in July), but it was never a question of if someone would have a birthday party or not -- I basically thought they were mandatory for anyone under 13. I think my parents rented a big van and took my friends and I 30 minutes to the beach one year? I remember they got a bouncy castle thing for our yard a couple times. But DH grew up here in NYC, and he was like yeah, I had a bar mitzvah and that was it. Poor guy, his bar mitzvah was supposed to be downtown 2 weeks after 9/11, so.... not exactly festive. He played ice hockey though (so hung out with a lot of private school guys), and he said some of them had crazy epic birthday parties. All that to say, another reason I want to move out of the city: so difficult to do birthday parties even when it's nice out!

I love these birthday party ideas. My parents weren't together growing up so I almost always had giant birthday parties bc my parent's would take turns throwing them and the other was not to be out done. Best memories: age 7 I had a party at DZ (discovery zone), age 10 my dad throw me a block party with DJ, BBQ, street games & dancing (sadly I had a friend drown on a field trip right before so the party was great but I was so sad, the girl's dad came and brought me flowers and said how much she was looking forward to my party), age 12 I had a carnival with cotton candy, games, etc, 14 full weekend sleepover, and 16 all at bash heated pool, hot tub, DJ, so much food it was the party of the year.

    Happy Birthday @sabby2 and @Amphibious22!

@amys614 we do a big blow up water slide for DS’s birthdays (and will for DD when she is a little older - right now she gets a bouncy house).  I totally agree best $$ spent - the kids play on it alllllll day, some adults join in and the place we getting it from leaves it for the entire weekend!!  So.much.fun!!!

@sabby2 right there with you on the placenta. it really bothers my PGAL brain also. I find myself trying to wake him up, pleading with him to give me alittle kick.. then sitting super still till I feel a nudge. I know I had bigger kicks from DS by now.

@patientlywaiting10 how old is your LO? we video'd DS reading what the baby is from a folded up note. you could do a cupcake they bite into? pop balloons with confetti inside?

@Sunshineandwhiskey I made that same mistake about the pants today and just as I was scrolling through this post and feeling how uncomfortable my pants are, I stumbled on your comment.  The maternity pants keep falling down though!  Is it the fact that my pants are used and have been through a few other rounds of pregnancy or is this just normal maternity pants issues?  I can't remember this from before. I think I just jammed into regular pants for longer in the past.

The birthday party thing is ridiculous!  My oldest is 7 and we ended up planning 3 different birthday parties last year so we didn't have to rent a big room for the party.  We had the friends party, then the party for DH's side and then for my side. It was too much!  We have to figure something else out next year. She's also an October birthday so outdoors is not really an option for us.  For my son's 4th birthday we ended up renting a big indoor play gym for his party but it was so much money for a kids birthday party! Might be an every other year sort of thing for us to throw a big party for them and then the next year they get a cupcake with the grandparents sort of celebration.

HBD @sabby2!!  My 30th birthday was my favorite birthday to date (it fell on Mardi Gras).   Also, I started dating my husband a few weeks later, so 30 was a good year for me.   Hope it treats you well too!

As a winter baby with 1 Christmas/New Years baby I am so excited that I won't have to plan a winter party for this one!!  Our house is small- our family is very large.  So for DD's first birthday, I selfishly waiting a long time to send out party invites and planned it on Dec 30th for DD's 1st birthday.  Most of our family and friends were not able to make it- and our small house didn't have to host 50+ people (we had about 25).  I told DH that in the future I feel like the kids can decide for themselves if they want to have a party, an expensive gift, or go out somewhere special for their birthdays.  We will do friends only for the birthday parties and a combo party in the spring (1/2 way between thier birthdays) for our large families so we can utilize the outdoor or park spaces.  He doesn't think the combo party will fly with them- but they get 2 birthdays that way- so they can take the combo or not celebrate with family.

Also, my husband is turning 40 this year- so I am going to have another birthday party to plan.  He's birthday is April 29th, but he's a HUGE Star Wars fan- so I was thinking of planning something for May 4th.  That is 1 month before my EDD (and DD was 2 weeks early)- so part of me thinks I'm crazy and I should just do a dinner or something for him so close to #2 coming.  But you only turn 40 once right?

murraydog2008 - I'm in the same boat with reg pants and my mat pants from 2 years ago.  It is just "growing pains".  Think about how much bigger we are going to get from now until June and we'll be wearing the same maternity pants?  Once our bellies fill out more of the panel it will help hold them up...and fill in the sagginess, lol

Rant ahead re: BW/ultrasound, don't mind me.

I'm kind of over this test result issue. I just want to know if LO is healthy, and move on.
The doctor called me this morning right before my class to let me know that while he thinks the ultrasound looked great, and the tech did a great job, he still wants to refer me to a perinatologist (MFM) for a level 2 ultrasound if that's something I'd be interested in. He didn't push, but he also didn't tell me it would be a waste of money.

He said the ultrasound yesterday was beautiful, but then in the next breath said that the equipment may be better at MFM and may get better pictures just to put everything at ease more, since there's still a chance the u/s yesterday could have missed a "tiny bulge". I mean, the spine and the skin line looked great to me, and the u/s tech said they looked great, but what do I know? Half the time she was telling me I was looking at one thing and I thought it was something else.

I asked if he thought we should still do it if the blood test comes back normal this time, and he basically said that he would still offer it regardless because the first draw came back abnormal. So I feel like if we don't do the ultrasound, we'll be sitting here wondering if the BW is right and twiddling our thumbs with worry.

    *sigh*

@izza2 I’m sorry you’re going through this. I guess for peace of mind either way it maybe wouldn’t hurt to go through with the MFM/level 2 scan. Like you said- If you don’t, and the BW comes back fine, would it still be a worry in the back of your mind the rest of the pregnancy? Sucks. Thinking of you.

@izza2 ~ I am sorry you are going through this stress. Did they tell you when your latest blood results would come back?

Its hard to say say what I would do in your shoes, but if the second blood work came back good, I don’t think I personally would go back for another Scan. There are risks to having a lot of scans done. I do understand the desire to want to do another one just to ease your mind.

Maybe see what the blood work says before you decide?

@izza2 Sorry that you're going through this, it can be really overwhelming when the Dr won't just give you a yes/no answer and it's tough for you to make a decision because there are a hundred things spinning in your head.  I agree with the other ladies - the fact that the Dr said that would keep me anxious through the rest of the pregnancy just wondering if there is a possibility the scan did miss something.  If insurance covers it, I would go to MFM.  My office swears by their USs and is making me do mine there.  Hugs  <3

@izza2 to confirm this isn't an additional scan right? You haven't actually had your a/s yet because yesterday was impromptu? So this would just be a level 2 for your a/s?

We are having a level 2 a/s even though all of my BW and tests up to this point have come back normal. Our situation might be a little different because MH has a cleft lip and palate so they are just doing extra checks to see if BB has one. From what my dr explained regarding the level 2 it isn't a better machine than what they use for normal a/s just a longer list of measurements and things the tech takes pictures of and it is reviewed by a perinatologist. Your dr might have meant that it was a better machine that what was used for your scan yesterday.

If it will ease your worry I would do the level 2. It will more than likely be covered by insurance because of your abnormal result on the maternal serum. I definitely believe that too much information can be detrimental sometimes but in this case I think it would confirm what your dr already thinks based on your u/s yesterday.

@BurlapandLace - We'll probably wait and decide until after the BW comes back (7-10 business days, it took them 7 days this past time). But I don't know if we'll be able to handle the "what if". But then on the flip side, even if the ultrasound looks great, who's to say something isn't missed and we feel confident everything is okay, and find out it's not once LO is born? It's a catch-22 either way.
I'm not really concerned about any risks, because there's no scientific proof showing having X amount of ultrasounds during pregnancy causes issues with fetal development or child development in the future. Anything I've seen has purely been speculation. And as it is, unless I end up high-risk from the a/s or future measurements show a potential for growth restriction, I won't be getting a dozen other ultrasounds this pregnancy. I know some women who had upwards of a dozen+ ultrasounds during their pregnancy and have healthy children.

@becca_123 - I guess the doctor spoke to the ladies in the office and everyone there agreed that the u/s tech who has done both of my u/s's there is fantastic and the best in the area. But they're also biased, of course. But she was fantastic for both scans, and yesterday she said if she was in my shoes she'd feel great if it were her baby and she had the u/s.

@krashke - Correct, we haven't had an actual a/s yet. If the baby cooperated yesterday and she could see everything good enough, she would have counted that as the a/s, but she couldn't see the organs as well as she wanted so she (she being the u/s tech) said she'd rather have the actual a/s after the 20 week mark, which is when mine is scheduled (20+2). I don't know that even if I went to the MFM for an u/s they would be able to get good measurements for the same reason (I'm 17+3 today), unless they pushed it out another couple of weeks regardless. And at that point, I felt like the picture the u/s tech was getting yesterday was awesome, and she did not only abdominal but TV just to be sure of everything.
We're not super concerned about insurance being an issue. We have great insurance, and even with the co-insurance that would come with an ultrasound, H and I briefly discussed whether that would really put us off having the peace of mind.

Thank you to all of you.

@izza2 I would do the level 2 u/s just for peace of mind (especially if insurance is covering it).  Otherwise, you'll always wonder.  I'm sorry you are going through this and hope you get some final answers soon.

@sabby2 and @catlady1215 +1 on the anterior placenta.  I feel kicks occassionally, but nothing consistent.  When I had my bleeding incident last week, the first thing the doctor asked was about movement.  Because I can't feel anything consistent, I was unable to respond, which freaked me out more.  I'm hopefully I'll feel consistent kicks soon.

@izza2, I don't have much to add that others haven't already said, but hugs. That's a stressful situation, but I agree that doing the scan is probably the right move.

Re: maternity pants. Anyone else have the problem that their underwear slips down while wearing them? I have an Old Navy pair with side panels, and while they skip down a tiny bit, it's my underwear halfway down my butt that really bugs me. No real way to be graceful about fixing that. I wonder if maybe I should have gone a size down, or if it's just too early for them to fit right. I'm usually a size 1, but they only had size 0 and 2, so I went with the 2 since even prepregnancy, my old pair of jeans from there (size 0) wore like a sausage casing, but maybe they just shrunk?

Those BellaBands tho. I need to get me some more of those.

@izza2 tough decision, I get the dilemma! Ultimately, it sounds like your Dr is giving you the option "just in case" or to cover their butt in the event something ends up being wrong. I've been seeing a perinatologist along side my OB since 6 weeks (factor V leiden). All my scans have been with the perinatologist to this point. At my 17 week with my OB she threw a curve  ball and offered for me to transfer my U/S back to her office instead of at the perinatologist. Overall, she said it would save healthcare dollars as her office bills about $700 for a scan and the perinatologist is at about $2100 for an U/s. Figuring I'll hit my deductible quickly, I opted to at least do my anatomy scan as planned at the perinatologist and to hear the final baby looks great before I consider transferring ultrasounds to my OB office. I believe since you haven't had your anatomy yet, it may be worth having a specialist take over your care for at least the short term. I will say, it tends to get clunky having two different doctors looking over your care.... Almost like too many cooks in the kitchen. However, the advantage is, if something is seen abnormally(Fx it's not), the care is already in the right hands and the process will carry on quickly without a lot of changes in hands.  Best of luck with your decision. I hope that it's just for piece of mind and LO is doing great!

@izza2 just something else to think about - when I had my Nt Scan at MFM the tech said there isn’t much difference at all between level 1 and level 2. They take a couple extra pictures and that’s it. I’m sure whatever you decide will be the right decision <3

@BurlapandLace with DD I had so many scans I can’t even count at this point haha between normal OB and MFM it was ridiculous. I think DD has turned out okay too ;)

Re: bolded -- he definitely is, and I don't blame him for it at all. Any physician should offer it in the event BW comes back abnormal, so that God forbid if something is actually wrong, I can't look back and be sue-happy and say "well, he should've offered me this and didn't". It wouldn't have even occurred to me, tbh, but he did say when he first called that he would be remiss/negligent to not offer me the option.

@izza2 I wouldn't stress about it too much since your scans looked good yesterday.  I know a few people that had to go back fro a 2nd a/s because baby wouldn't co-operate and move for the tech to get a good view of all the organs they are looking at for the exam.  Since the organs are on different areas of the baby if they just do not want to cooperate you sometimes have to go back- and none of the women I know who needed a 2nd scan had any risks they were specifically looking for.  If you take the stress of "what if" out of the situation, you might be able to enjoy the opportunity to see the LO again.  FX for continuous good results from your BW and possible scans.

+1 on the pants falling off. I even bought a pair of new side panel pants from Old Navy. Slightly better for this in between stage than full panel, but still constantly hiking them up. I don't have much booty to start and this isn't doing much for the confidence there as I always look saggy.

Also +1 on the stupid anterior placenta. I know I should be grateful that it's at least doing it's job, but I'll be 19 weeks and nada in the movement department. A few times I've had the "is it a gas bubble or a baby?" but it's nothing that would ever have grabbed my attention before pregnancy. Who knows, but it would sure be nice to have that extra reassurance.

I, too, have an anterior placenta!  It's kind of cool that there are so many of us!  I have felt some movement and the movement I do feel is SUPER low in my pelvic region.  So, if you think it might be baby WAY DOWN low, it probably is!

DSS's school is on a three hour delay.

    Now I have to choose...
Do I send him to school for 3 hours, let him go to his instrument lesson this afternoon, and then have to drive to my parents' house to get him off the bus...
Or do I keep him home, stay cuddling the dogs on the couch, and not have to leave the house at all today...

I'm leaning toward the second one, but then I'll kinda feel guilty that he'll miss his instrument lesson. But also, it's cold outside...

+ another for anterior placenta  :/ I've only felt 1 confirmed movement at 18+6 but nothing in last week.  Though like@patientlywaiting10 mentioned, I've felt some super low grumbling that I've suspected is movement but chalked it up to nothing.... Hoping to turn a corner and feel regular movement soon!

@stephcat421 he did apologize in a text this morning so that was nice of him. I would have done the same thing if MH came home smelling like that. Glad you got to watch the bachelor in peace though!

@marcus7676 thanks for asking your dr! I just really hope to see/feel those bigger rolls. And I really want DS to feel some good kicks. He'd get a kick out of it.

@catlady1215 Oh you will!  And your DS will be able to feel too after a while.  How old is he again?

During the A/S I told DH to look at my stomach because babes was moving like crazy and kicking.  I told him, "I bet if you look at this side of my stomach you'll be able to see the movement".  Of course he didn't, because we were watching the screen, but still exciting.

Also team anterior placenta. I have been feeling movement since about 17w (I'm 17+6 now), but it's really subtle. Instead of distinct twitches, it's more like a ball spinning slowly or a trembling feeling. Then the occasional twitch on my lower left or way up high. I'm interested to see where my placenta is now at my a/s Monday.

Since we're talking about placentas and movement, did any of you S+TMs get to find out at your scans (obv mostly by chance) what certain movements you're feeling actually are? For instance, I'm curious to know if it's possible to start to tell what is the hiccups for instance vs a kick, etc.? If that makes sense?
