Buying Maternity Clothes

Baby has decided that I don't wear pants anymore.  Where are you buying cheap maternity clothes from?  If you know of places that ship to FPOs that would be amazing!  I really like the stuff on zulily but that website doesn't like my address.

Re: Buying Maternity Clothes

  • I just live in leggings and sweaters... I am not looking forward to shopping for March/April- I will vouch though that Motherhood Maternity's leggings are comfy (and they sometimes have bogos)

  • Hello and welcome! I see this is your first post on our board. Feel free to leave a little about yourself on our introduction board so we can all get to know each other and take a look at our **read first** thread for an idea of how we keep the board organized. Posts like this aren’t typically encouraged as they clog up the board. Either the Randoms or Questions threads would have been a more appropriate place for this topic.

To answer your question, this is my second and I’m still mostly in regular clothes, but I do live in leggings. I had good luck with H&M, Target (although it is hit or miss), and some pricier pieces like motherhood. I like zulily a lot too but I don’t love the shipping times.
  • if you type maternity clothes into the bottom search bar you will find quite a few times people have shares where they have been getting maternity clothes

  • I like H&M for maternity, otherwise I wore mostly the flowy style tops and dresses from Forever 21.Last time I also got a couple of maternity stitch fixes for nicer work clothes which I was really happy with, however with their price point it was hard to justify spending the money for something I only wore for like 3-4 months. I'm still in regular clothes but my jeans get tight at the end of the day!

This, except I also wear a lot of dresses, boots, and tights. I just bought some dresses on clearance at Target this morning that will hopefully float me through to Spring.  I am still wearing my regular pants at this point, but I don't know how much longer that will last.

  • In my experience maternity skinny jeans are essential — otherwise I like big cozy sweaters and add some cute boots and go. Regular shirts (maybe a size bigger) will fit for awhile...so I’ll take advantage of that and wear them post partum too!
  • I'm glad this thread is here. I was just starting to think of maternity clothes. I'd really like to try a little harder this pregnancy and get some everyday items that mix and match well. I keep seeing outfit capsules on pinterest, so I'm going to attempt something like that.

For those of you who have bought from H&M in the past, how do the sizes work given their notoriety for sizes that are way off? Have you ever seen their maternity line in a store or is it pretty much all online?
  • @kenya715 The H&M I go to has maternity section, not very big, however it's there. I only shop for tops here because my bottom half is not H&M worthy. I'm big on Old Navy jeggings (non maternity) and their blouses. Super comfy and you can find petite online.

  • I also don’t mind a couple individual threads.

I purchased some maternity shirts and jeans at ASOS. I love the style but unfortunately the jeans I purchased were a bit tight. I am a size 6 but I guess size 8 would be better for maternity wear.

I didnt want to ruin my expensive leggings so I purchased some cheaper leggings for pregnancy. Tip for FTM: don’t ruin your old clothes. It’s better to buy a few new pieces than stretch everything else out. I ruined so many dresses and shirts last time!
  • @zombiehoohaa I have the same problem with H&M tops fit but pants never fit me right.

also old navy has a bigger selection of maternity clothes online than in store. also I had mentioned the search since I buy most of my stuff used since I could not remember who had said what.

  • Amazon. Already bought some leggings, maternity jeans, comfy bras and maternity/nursing tank tops.  Plus being prime with free shipping is awesome too :)
  • I have such a hard time finding maternity clothes. I’m 6’ so finding pants that are long enough and that look good regularly is tough, let alone maternity pants. With my previous pregnancies I spent all together way too much money on clothes at Motherhood and they didn’t hold up as well as I had hoped. I also liked some of the clothes at Macy’s, but again, not too affordable. Someone else mentioned that ASOS has good maternity clothes and I intend to try them this time around. Anyone try them before? I’ll keep you ladies posted if I order soon.

  • Saks has a decent maternity selection but I ended up buying a bunch of stuff off Shopbop. Counting the hours until my lounge pants get here-I’m sick of wearing my husbands sweatpants!
  • @ladyj2949 I bought a bunch of stuff on ASOS, and returned / exchanged most of it. My personal POV is that the ASOS brand itself is of questionable quality. The non-Asos branded merchandise I purchased I liked much better. Sizing-wise - it’s UK & young - so size up. Also only buy on sale. They won’t price adjust unless you return & rebuy, which I did.

I’ve also ordered a variety of stuff from Bloomingdales (maternity jeans are all they formally carry, but Vince, Eileen Fisher, Lafayette 148 all fit loose). And I’m splurging on a couple items from a Hatch Collection.

For more budget friendly I’m looking & Zara, Macy’s, Motherhood & Gap/Old Navy.

I’ll easily return 80%+ — but my job is ‘business fashionable’ and I’m the boss... so I can’t wear leggings or jeans M-F.
  • I guess I’m more of a tomboy, I’m usually in leggings or sweats. I do realize some people work in professional business settings, so you can’t wear leggings or sweats there of course. With my first I had bought from very little clothing from H&M’s maternity. I really just started buying bigger sized clothing from cheaper stores like Rainbow or Danice. I honestly don’t want to spend a lot of money on clothes I might not fit ever again. It’s a waste to me.
  • Now's the time working from home will really help! I just bought a pair of mat jeans at Target. I just couldn't resist. Haven't even tried them on yet, but I'm the return queen, so I'm not concerned.

Definitely checking out H&M next week. I'm happy with my $9 Gap leggings that I got over black Friday. Aside from jeans, everything else still fits fine so I'm waiting until I pop to see what is worth splurging on!
  • I really like Loft's maternity clothes (only found them online and they have a lot of 50% off sales!) and I've been stalking Poshmark too. My last pregnancy I got really cheap clothes for work (mostly from Burlington Coat Factory) and I felt like they all fell apart after a few washes. I agree that Target is hit or miss.
  • I got work pants from Macy's yesterday, and there's a small sale. It's going to be so comfortable!
  • Last pregnancy I got most of my professional maternity clothes from Motherhood in person.  But I bought a lot of tops, jeans and casual clothes from Old Navy and Gap online!  Their return policy is amazing so it makes it much easier when pregnant.
  • Anyone getting a Stich Fix with maternity clothing? I just scheduled one and I can’t wait to see what I get.
  • Unfortunately with my job, I HAVE to be professional/conservative and able to appear in Court at a moment’s notice. I’ve already bought 2 pairs of maternity pants for work from Motherhood Maternity as it was buy one get one 40% off. I don’t *need* them yet, as my pants fit, but it sure is nice when I am exhausted to not have to stay up to do laundry.

Im thinking of getting some maternity jean/leggings for weekends.
  • @chaser61 I've never done Stitch Fix in general, but your post reminded me that I just saw an ad for a clothing rental site specifically for maternity. Le Tote, I think it was?

BTW guys, don't forget to check out child specific consignment shops. A lot of the time they'll have a maternity section, and because it's "consignment," not thrift, they are pretty picky about what they take in which means the clothing is really good.

@chaser61 I’m doing Stitch Fix now! I have received two shipments so far and only kept two items both times. They are getting better though with what they are selecting for me so I’m hopeful it will continue to be items I can use and feel cute in for a change. When are you getting your first one? Let me know how it goes!

  • @d_marie_23 I have seen advertisements for Le Tote but have not tried them yet.

@LadyJ2949 my first maternity fix arrives on the 16th! I have received about ten fixes in the past. I stopped using them for awhile because they started to get off track. I was sending the whole fix back or would try to keep at least one item so I would not lose $20. It is so exciting to receive them even though you are paying for it.  Did you get maternity clothing in your last fix?
  • I wonder if OP even came back to read any of these responses...

sadly I don’t think so! Her profile says ‘last active jan 3’ which was the date of the OP
  • I'm really glad someone made this thread! I haven't had have time to catch up on the randoms or questions threads lately, and this thread was so easy for me to locate and read through quickly-- thanks everyone for the suggestions! I didn't even think of zulilly or poshmark-- last time I was pregnant, our local Gap carried maternity clothes in store, and I recently found they no longer do so:(
  • I tried Stitch Fix maternity and hated it.  I think I kept one shirt, but the pants didn't fit and the items were very expensive compared to other maternity stores.  I'm willing to spend money on nice business wear, but not if I'm only going to wear it 4 months!
  • @chaser61 got a few maternity fixes during my last pregnancy and loved a couple of the things I got. I do feel like they have a lot of loose, flowy stuff that I think is frumpy and I definitely over emphasized that I do not want any huge, frumpy pieces.

The things I ordered from Zulily came today and I am really happy with all thee items, especially this maternity/nursing sweater thing <3

@chaser61 yes I’m getting maternity. I’m due for another one soon and hoping they get it right. I do agree some of it is expensive but it’s so hard for me to find any maternity clothes I like so I’ll take anything I can get.

  • Ladies- I was scanning through the freebies board and went last night to target to get my welcome bag for starting a registry (totally cute) and inside is a coupon for 10% off a maternity purchase!  I bought a pair of jeggings and loveeeeee them!

I wish my Target had more mat close in store! My old one back in Cali had such cute stuff, this one only has ugly jeans and some tank tops. I need to check if that coupon works online.

DH said come on its time! So we went to the outlets which had a "Motherhood  Maternity" and got some great stuff! Omg, the leggings are soooo comfy, I plan to wear them for the rest of my life! Most of the styles celebrate the bump by showing it off but I found a few things I can still hide in for now which suddenly just got harder to do a week ago. And I got my first free goodie bag which included a little bottle inside. Oh, and I signed up for 2 years of parent magazine for only $3. I am so much more comfortable now!! I found it to be a little pricey but there were a few great clearance finds that were surprisingly winter, and there was a buy two regular price items, get one free deal.

    Edited for spelling
  • @wildtot I just ordered a shit ton of dresses from target online. Maybe try checking out their online options if they allow instore returns?
I’ve found a line called ripe maternity which has cute dresses and decent jeans. I find pants so hard to buy.

I just got my first pair of maternity jeans! I got the Old Navy rockstars with the side panel—I’d definitely recommend! They’re a little pricy but if you wait for a sale/coupon definitely worth it—especially for taller ladies because they have long!

I will say they’re a bit big in the waist (which I expected) right now, but I couldn’t have sized down because the legs would have been too tight.
  • One thing I've learned about maternity clothes after getting some from Motherhood Maternity and some from Old Navy is that the same sizes can differ! (Just like with regular clothes, lol.) Motherhood Maternity runs a bit small on me--I was surprised to be fitting into those clothes already. But Old Navy is a bit big on me (which in a way feels normal at 14 weeks + 4).
  • @babybakie yes their leggings are the best!!

  • Kohl’s has a sale going on (I can’t remember when it ends). $10 off maternity or baby purchases with code babysale10. 30% off of your purchase if you use a Kohl’s charge card with code platinum30. And free shipping with code jan4free. I got two pairs of maternity jeans for $48. I normally don’t get maternity clothes at Kohl’s since I think they’re too expensive, (one pair of jeans was originally $88 for something that will only be worn a few months) but this was a good deal.
  • I saw someone else mention this too, but consignment shops for maternity clothes is awesome. Most consignment only take good quality clothes and most maternity clothes are worn a handful of times and buying them "used" is so much cheaper! I've found awesome jeans at our store for $6 that I am still wearing 2 pregnancies later and this weekend my store is having a 50% off bag sale (everything in the bag is 50% off).

I try to save as much on the "outer" clothes as possible so I can splurge on a great nursing bra.
