GTKY: New Years Traditions

Do you have any New Years Eve/New Years Day traditions in your family? If you don’t have any traditions are you doing anything fun this weekend? I wanna know!

Re: GTKY: New Years Traditions

  • The only real tradition we have is to eat pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day. We will be having a friends NYE party though that is usually fun and super hectic! Our town has a pretty cool ice sculpture display on NYE too and we’ll probably hit that up too.

  • Nothing sadly. First year or two of dating we would go out if I didn’t work New Year’s Day. Then next 2-3 years we would go out to eat with his parents at a nice restaurant. Now we just stay home. I had wanted to go out this year but finding a sitter is hard and now baby.  We will probably stay up and binge watch shameless
  • @hillbillywife  what kind of pork?  I actually like sauerkraut but always make it the same way (with kielbasa sausage).  I would love a new way to make it!

Our traditions have changed over the years since we have been married.  Used to go visit friends in Kansas City, MO (about 4 hours from here) for a party.  They are my husbands college frat buddies, so the parties were pretty fun.  lol.  But these days we are usually exhausted from all of the Christmas stuff so we just do something low key.  This year we are doing a game night and appetizers at my sister's house with family.  The kids will have fun playing, and it will be nice to be close to home.
New Year's Day my husband likes to make Ham and Beans.  Which is weird because my dad always liked doing it when I was growing up.  Funny that he has the same weird tradition.   :D

  • We always went over my dads and made chicken wings but dh hasn’t wanted to the past few years. Last year we were sleeping before 11. We’re lame. This year we’re going out with friends and mil is watching DS... and I’m dd. Yay. -_- New Year’s Day is my cousins birthday so we usually go over my aunts house to celebrate.
  • NYE is my bday so I usually have friends over and have a good time, DH always has to work until 8/9 because it's one of the busiest days of the year which sucks.
This year I'll probably go to dinner with my sister and my best friend because pregnant/sober me is boring and tired past 10 pm.
  • @stlmegs we just do a pork roast of some sort. Tenderloin sometimes. It depends on what we have. Usually we just put it in the crockpot all together for all day so it’s nice and tender. Some people like to toss some hot dogs in there lol but I think that’s cheating.

Beans are very ambiguous to me since they’re not a big part of culture up here. Do you do baked beans? Or another kind. Baked is the only way I know how to do them lol.
  • We always do something different New Year's Eve, usually with my parents or DH's parents. This year with the kiddos being sick off and on we are quarantining ourselves at home and just going to relax and watch movies with the kids. I usually like to take down the Christmas stuff during the weekend too, usually New Year's Day but we might do it Saturday so I can deep clean the house Sunday and do nada on Monday.

  • Nothing usually we need more adult with kids friends our age haha

  • @amylu914 I love that tradition!!

@hillbillywife we always do great white northern or pinto. Baked beans would be really good though!

  • @d_marie_23 I want to steal all your nye traditions! They sound fab.
  • @amylu914 that’s a really cool tradition! We don’t drink so we always have a (or many) bottles of Martinelli’s on hand lol.

@d_marie_23 ohh! I love a good HP marathon!! And we totally do disgusting amounts of junk food too lol. I want to do an ice cream sundae bar this year!

@lindsayleigh1989 I agree, you do! It’s nice to have some friends who understand parenthood.

@zg49 ugh! I’m sorry you’ve all been sick. Sometimes it’s really nice to have a chill holiday! Hopefully it’s  a nice evening even though you’ll be at home.
  • @d_marie_23 I love the Christmas tree balloon popping! Might need to steal that if I can stand to keep my tree up until then.
  • I sleep through it because I’m boring. Haven’t really done anything since i lived with my parents. Not even when i was single. My grandma usually does home made menudo for New Year’s Day which i will miss yet again. On New Year’s Eve my family usually eats 12 grapes for 12 months of good luck and say a small prayer. My mom also usually buys us red underwear because i guess it’s good luck? Lol I’m just happy for new underwear. So this time as usual i will be sleeping.
  • Those are some interesting traditions lol @wildtot I wouldn’t say no to new underwear either!
  • @wildtot yup, red underwear is common in Italy as well! I wish I was always celebrating there. We have some traditional dishes we make and they are all so good. One is lentils, which I'm definitely making this year. We have always done something different so far, this year we are going to Las Vegas (not the strip) to visit friends who have moved there. It will most likely be a game night, and I'm quite excited about that! We may walk the strip on Saturday when we get there.

The only tradition we have is taking all of our pots, pans, cookie sheets, and wooden spoons outside at midnight and banging them as loud as possible, while screaming, " HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!". This has been the tradition since we were little and now it's been passed down to my nieces and nephews. It is SO much fun watching them with excitement!

ETA to add, my mom is greatest of them all to watch because she is so animated and fun!

  • We don’t have a sitter and frankly I’ve been feeling so crappy that’s I have zero desire to go out. We are going to make a bunch of appetizers and play games after the kids are in bed. My sister is also going to come out and stay with us for the weekend which will be fun. I’m really looking forward to it not being crazy and just relaxing. :)

  • @zombiehoohaa haha I love that tradition! The kids must be thrilled. So any of your neighbors do it too?

I love hearing about all these traditions. We usually make a nice dinner on New Year’s Day and when I was growing up it was at my grandmothers house and we’d all get together there as a family. Since she has passed and I’m now in a different state, we have just been doing our own little thing at our house.

  • @zombiehoohaa MH's family does that too, I had forgotten about that because I haven't made it to midnight since DS was born  :s

The neighbors across the street tend to come out and shout as well. There are a TON of illegal fireworks that get set off, so I think our noise is minimal compared to the fireworks. The kids are thrilled to say the least. I'll try to snap a picture this year (hopefully I'm awake).

  • Pediatric nurse life means I’ll be ringing in the New Year on night shift with ginger ale out of a baby bottle (unit tradition).

Otherwise, if I’m not working, we usually just do appetizers for dinner with my BILs and their wives/GFs, nothing too crazy.

  • Such great traditions! We’re going to have 3-4 extra kiddos over at our place and 4-6 extra grown ups. It’s going to be a full fun evening hopefully! I am a little jealous of all of you having low key nights cuz I’m exhausted and isn’t love to be able to chill on the couch all night lol
  • DH just said he wants to go to Disneyland for NYE (we have passes)...I'm not so sure I'm up for it, physically. The crowds are my issue, it's the standing. Right now, I need to sit/lay down as much as possible. We LOVE to people watch! So, even though we would be elbow to elbow with others, the environment of people watching does sounds pretty fun. Yet...laying down sounds so delightful. I may compromise and say lets go New year's Day since people will be too hungover to go early.

  • We go to my co-worker-turned-great- friend.  Numerous children, too much food, Wii bowling tournament, shenanigans, and laughter.
