Re: Weekly Questions│Last week of 2017

  • Selfishly started...

I know it's hard to talk about weight gain but I am just curious. I will ask my doctor at my 16 wk appointment next week but I haven't gained any weight since my 8 wk appointment. Even with the holidays. I was concerned at first because I gained 6 lbs in the first 7 weeks. My dr said it was probably just bloat/water weight and then I didn't gain any weight at my 12 week appointment but I figured it was just because the water weight was replaced with real weight. Now I am 15+3 and I have only gained 6 lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight.

  • @krashke I wouldn't be too concerned! My last pregnancy I didn't start gaining weight until later on (I don't remember what week/month exactly). But eventually the weight just kept piling on and I was glad I didn't gain much in the beginning! With my recent stomach bug and my morning sickness I'm still my same pre pregnancy weight currently at 14 weeks.
  • @krashke I had my 16 week appointment today (even though I'm basically 17 weeks) and hadn't gained a single pound still.  Which I'm not altogether surprised about because I was so sick over Christmas and barely ate.  But my doctor didn't seem too concerned and said I will gain weight eventually.
  • @krashke With DS, I gained about 20 pounds overall.  During the first few months, I lost about 5-10 pounds.  I only started gaining around the 4-5 month mark. Doctor was never concerned.

  • @krashke I hadn’t gained any weight with pregnancy at all when I flew out here at 15+5, and since then I’ve gained 11 lbs (17+4) soooooo lol?
  • @krashke At my last appointment at 15+3 I had just gained back the weight I lost first trimester.  I'm already on the low end of my BMI so I didn't really have weight to lose and I was worried.  The doctor wasn't concerned though.  She said I should start gaining 1-1.5 pounds a week starting at 18 weeks, and the most important thing right now is to just drink enough water.  I gained two pounds just in the last week though (I'm 16+4 now), so it'll happen!

  • Thank you all! I was reading the chapter in Expecting Better about weight gain and it kind of freaked me out. Good to know that the weight gain isn't really evenly distributed over the whole pregnancy.

  • @kraske I agree with your doctor I haven't gained any weight since week 8 (16 weeks now). I think it was water weight and constipation and now its real weight.

  • I agree- I was overweight to begin with and initially I lost about 5 pounds from all the MS, and just now at almost 16 weeks I'm back to my prepreg weight. I'm definitely showing and my boobs are huge, haha. I think everything just redistributed. I'm sure it'll start packing on soon. As long as you're staying hydrated and doing your best to eat as healthy as you can, I think you're fine!
  • So has anyone else's labs taken forever to get back? Tomorrow will be a week. They said they typically come back the next day but when I called yesterday the nurse said she thought the lab was behind from the holiday weekend. I'm anxious to get the 1 hour glucose and sequential screening back!
  • @katie121209 it's the main reason I want to go to Maine, eventually.  I mean I hear it's beautiful but I really just want to eat a boat load of lobster.

@krashke I'm sure you are perfectly healthy and will start gaining in no time. I am over my ideal BMI so they want me to gain 8-18lbs but would be fine with me gaining none. I gained none at 12 weeks and have my 16 week appt this Friday, so we shall see. I need to weigh myself at home like I used to so I'm not in for any surprises at the doctor.
  • @krashke I lost 5lbs from morning sickness and haven't gained it back yet. My Dr is not concerned yet (16+1 weeks today). With my 1st, I only gained 5lbs and DD came out at 5lbs 14oz, so I only gained her lol.
If Dr is concerned, they'll give suggestions. My 2nd pregnancy I drank ensure in addition to 3 meals a day to try and help my weight gain.
High calorie smoothies or milkshakes are always a good option too.
  • To be honest, my OB this time, and last time, (2 different doctors) have not mentioned weight at all. In any way. I have a high BMI, as a plus sized mama, and they don't say anything about my weight. (I also don't ask.) If it was a concern, I am confident they would mention it.  (Gained 26 lbs with last pregnancy, with no real weight gain from 4- 12 w and 30-36 w)

With my first, my OB said "you girls, going through IVF, gain your weight pre-pregnancy"... she just warned me that it is not "eating for two", but eating for one, and a snack.

That being said, I have had friends who have ballooned, and some who have barely popped a belly. (one friend barely popped the first, and ballooned the second) Everyone is different, and I believe as long as your are making healthy choices, and your OB is not concerned... trust that it will be okay.
Mama to a wonderful DD - Sep 2015, Wife to my DH since 2011, 2 dogs, a cat, and hoping to add No. 2 in May/June 2018. Canadian.
5 - IUIs, 3 - IVF retrievals, 2- failed transfers (fresh, and frozen), PGS on second IVF resulted in 1 perfect emby, and DD.
3rd IVF w PGS resulted in 3! perfect embys. 1st transfer - Sep 2017 2 more on ice.
  • I gained 5lbs with my first, but being plus sized that was a good thing.  Now I've gained about 1 - 3lbs which makes me a little nervous that I'll gain too fast.  I also feel like I'm indulging way more this go around than the first.

Not to take things in a gross direction and I know it's asked a billion times a week, but I've had diarrhea for about 4 days now.  I'm trying to figure out if it's a bug or just normal pregnancy symptoms and if I should call the doctor or even mention it.  I'm pretty sure it's not food as I haven't consistently been eating the same "bad" thing.  No other sickness and everyone else in the house seems fine.  Someone just tell me I'm overreacting and that this is just another one of those "benefits" of pregnancy!  TIA!
  • @LukesMom16 I would make sure you are getting enough fluids if you are having that much diarrhea. Also try adding some more fiber to your diet. It's probably good to check with the Dr if it continues.

  • Any pregnancy friendly suggestions on how to prevent a cold? I woke up this morning and my nose is running like a faucet and my throat is slightly scratchy. I've been drinking water like crazy but not sure if there's anything else I can do or take to keep this from becoming a full-fledged cold!

  • @harveyabbey77 I woke up with something similar a few days before Christmas. In the morning, I've been drinking hot water with lemon and honey, which really seems to help. Someone previously suggested adding eucalyptus essential oil to your shower (i just ordered some and will try it tomorrow morning). Hope you feel better soon!

  • @harveyabbey77 rhinocort nasal spray is class b for pregnancy, and I really think it helped reduce my sore throat/length of my cold. A humidifier is also a godsend. I drank throat coat tea which helped soothe. But yea, you’re a bit limited compared to pre-pregnancy.
  • Debating on going to the doctor... my back is out and Tylenol isn’t helping anything. I am just not sure there is anything they can do. Any suggestions? Or is there any point going into the doctor?

  • So I had my surgery this afternoon to remove my melanoma. I have staples all up my leg. The dermatologist said I could take ibuprofen and I was like um no pregnant women can’t take that, so he wrote me a script for hydrocodone after my husband told him that’s what he gives his pregnant patients. Reassuring when the doctor doesn’t know what to prescribe. Have any of you taken prescription pain meds when pregnant?

I've been feeling a weird sensation just under my skin in one spot on and off the last couple days.  It almost feels like a tiny worm wiggling around, like a cross between an itch and a tickle.  I thought it was just my skin stretching, but it seems like I'd be feeling it all over.  But it doesn't feel like a flutter or little pops like I've heard baby's movements usually feel like.  But it really feels like it's just under my skin, not deeper down like I would imagine movement in my uterus would feel like.  Anyone else feel this?  I'm trying to convince myself it's not just digestion related :D

  • @RatParade if I remember correctly you're also very thin in the stomach region? I would describe mine as more pops/flutters, I guess, but it does feel right beneath my skin. DH can feel them now. (I started feeling them tentatively around 16 weeks, DH could feel them by 17 weeks. I'm 17+6 today, and I can often see them now, and they've gotten much stronger.)
  • @doxiemoxie212 yeah I'm naturally pretty thin so everything is sort of just out there in the stomach area, I think we have a pretty similar body type.  I tried to see if MH could feel it but he couldn't.  I saw in your EDD week thing that it looks like a tennis ball now, which sort of blows my mind lol.  I sort of use you as my "what to expect" experience haha.  You're about a week ahead of me.

  • @RatParade lol I snorted with laughter at that, IDK why. Yeah, it's crazy town. I'm hoping I can get a look at our anatomy scan next Thursday at what movements she's doing when I feel different things.

  • @krashke I have only gained 5.  With DD, I gained hardly anything up to 20 weeks and then the gain happened quickly the last 20 and I ended up gaining 30.  So I say you are fine.  Also, I have only read 1st trimester section… thanks for the reminder to get back to reading!  (I guess you could say I lost interest after getting "permission" to have a glass of wine here and there and drink some caffeine lol)

    @katie121209 Glad everything went well!

  • Maybe TMI, but: So, my H and I took a pretty vigorous trip to the boneyard this morning, and ever since, my whole vaginal/vulvar area has been sore. It’s not a typical kind of “overuse” feeling (I will sometimes get a bit sore and irritated if we go for too long)....it’s more like a deep, internal aching, with a little bit of pressure, almost? I was thinking that maybe the baby shifted a bit down and is putting pressure on my cervix, but it seems early for that? But maybe not? I never had this during my first pregnancy. Anyone else getting weird post-sex pain, beyond just some cramping?

  • @RatParade I felt my first movements at 15+6 and 16+0 in the middle of the night. Felt like something rolling inside my abdomen or almost like an organ shifting (weird, but best way to describe the sensation)! Definitely not "pops" or "flutters." Confirmed with the nurse who did a blood draw for me yesterday (and other moms via Google search) that these were indeed baby movements. Other than that, they've felt like muscle twitches. It's been quiet lately, so hoping things will pick up again.

My question of the week: is anyone experiencing anything with their sense of smell? I feel like I inhaled some of FIL's secondhand smoke on Christmas morning. He smokes outside but doesn't hang around long enough to finish exhaling it all before coming back inside. I feel like I smell it 24/7 now and it's driving me a little crazy. I've had it before a couple of times and it eventually goes away. Dr. Google is freaking the sh*t out of me. I've been congested/snotty since the early weeks of pregnancy so I'm wondering if my sinuses are a little out of whack. Just learned how to use a neti pot the other night as I have no previous history of sinus issues.

@silvergreen I have definitely been experiencing this. I have never had any sinus issues or allergies and I have had congestion from the beginning. I smell everything in the house even from 2 rooms away and down the hall. I can especially tell when MH feeds the dog. I have banned garlic from the house. I am not nauseated, I just have nose super powers now apparently.

Edit: ...oh and the NOSEBLEEDS. That was a surprise.
  • @katie121209 glad your surgery went well. The dentist prescribed me hydrocodone as well. I didn’t even bother filling the prescription but I wasn’t going to argue I was an emergency walk in and already waited over an hour for him to get clearance from my OB for a mouth X-ray.

Question: what is everyone doing about mom friends? While most of my old friends have kids already, my local friends do not. So I’m starting from scratch. I have no clue where to start.

  • @ffw0617 dreading it? Is that an acceptable answer? I asked DH the other day if I had to make mom friends, and he said yes, whether I like it or not it will happen. Sigh.
  • @ffw0617, I feel like I'll have quite a few mom friends at work, since there are a lot of people around my age with infants (and I just found out there's someone due only 5w before me). I'm more worried about DH. I feel like he might get SAHM syndrome since he will start working from home around March, so I worry that he won't have any adult interaction anymore. He's definitely become antisocial over the years, and has 0 friends in this state. I'm hoping we can start going back to church to meet people in our area (plus we've just been bad about this since we moved to a new neighborhood) or meet people through birthing class or something.

@ffw0617 I have two “IRL” mom friends that I hang out with once a month. But they were already good friends who got pregnant around the same time I did with DD. Other wise my sanity lies with my previous BMB group. There are about 25 of us that talk daily and it is legit a saving grace. I tried that tinder app for moms too and it seemed okay. Even got paired up with someone and *almost* met. (I panicked) I think if I was a SAHM I would search for more Mom friends within other activities - swim lessons, Gymboree, etc.

@ffw0617 I don’t really have “mom friends.” I have one close friend who happened to have kids around the same time, but otherwise I mostly hang out with the child-free friends I already had. I have other moms I’m friendly with on our block, but I don’t plan outings with them beyond just running into each other.

I think I might want mom friends more if I was a SAHM, but I work full time and gets lots of adult interaction that way. So on the weekends, I just want to hang with my kid, not have a bunch of social outings. I think it just depends on your personality.
