Fit Mom Friday 12/22

Gonna start this a tad earlier since pregnancy brain means I will forget!

Re: Fit Mom Friday 12/22

  • I was gonna say, is it Friday already?! I was about to panic, my pregnant brain believed you! :D

  • Christmas goodies have derailed the best of my intentions for being a fit mom. I have zero self control around the cookies. Planning to get back on track after the new year!

  • Honestly? I have been totally failing. Buuut. 2nd trimester kicks in not long after new years, so I've pretty much given up til then. I'm going to eat the yummy food, including the delicious food my dad's Korean girlfriend cooks, and call cleaning and packing "fitness" until January 2nd rolls along (tradition states I am to eat aaaaalll of the finger foods and watch Twilight Zone marathon-- or LOTR or Harry Potter marathon-- one the 1st), when real life starts, I'm hopefully not feeling like death, and my schedule majorly changes with a lot more structure.

  • Taught yoga last night and added 45 min of Zumba. So fun! Crazy how quickly my heart rate goes up. I'm not sticking to 140 that strictly but don't want to keep it over 155 for too long. I'm not very good at Zumba anyway, so it's easy for me to modify! I'm super busy today but I'll try to sneak something in.
  • @BrittG13 cookies have been my downfall this week!! Between my team baking them, holiday parties and vendor gifts - I’m a giant cookie.

@kissableviv Curious how you came up with 155. My doctor said I could ignore 140, but as a limit I’m trying to stay beliw 155/160 too. Did spin again today; felt less bad than the 1st time which was nice.

  • The last couple of days I've not felt like complete crap and actually felt pretty awesome at Jazzercise last night. It was actually fun again and didn't feel like a chore, so I'm really hoping this mythical 2nd trimester energy burst I hear about is a real thing, looking forward to feeling a little more normal in a couple of weeks.

Got in 3 workouts so far this week, hoping to get another in tomorrow morning to help keep the holiday feasting damage to a minimum because I am an idiot that has a doctor appointment on the 26th. Can't wait to get on that scale after eating my body weight in holiday treats this week. That should be fun
  • @pretzellover I wear a Fitbit and I feel that 155 is when I could tell I was getting a tad tired. So not very scientific, mostly intuitive ;) doctor told me 140 but tbh I've been very active for the past few years, I should be ok. and sadly it doesn't take much to get to 140 these days, because we conceived on our honeymoon that added an extra 4 weeks of no gym (because really, who goes to the gym on their honeymoon??). So my endurance is crap but I feel like I can get back into a groove with some obvious modifications.
  • Missed my workout this morning because of extreme nausea.   My hammies are sore still from Thursday power lifting.  Lots of dead lifts.

  • @TheQuietThings Does the lifting not strain your abdomen / uterus? Last time I did my baby dead lifts it hurt for 1.5 days... scared the crap out of me!
  • Kiddo was sick this week which meant no Y for us. I did do one at home video workout but otherwise I’m saying screw it and eating all the things until the holidays are over.

  • @pretzellover no, it just hurts my hamstrings!  This is my third time doing this program though?   Maybe my poor abdominal muscles are just used to being stretched out. Ha.

  • @TheQuietThings or maybe bc you’re just a lot more fit!! ;) my 3-4 month IVF hiatus made me squishy... I’m trying to do a ‘double’ tonight bc I skipped my am workout & am traveling tomorrow. 1/2 way thru; gonna try deadlifts again! You’re my weight lifting motivation.
  • @pretzellover oh goodness.  Yes, after a 3-4 month hiatus, I would be squishy and sore all over!  Trying to talk myself into a workout tomorrow, but I see a late night of wrapping and being awake due to drinking coffee earlier (migraine).  And baking!   Just put a cheesecake in the oven!

  • Got 45 min of Xmas cardio in this am, and am toting a 1L water bottle to try and deter myself from all the sweets... can’t say it’s working GREAT.... but better than nada (?!).
    Merry Xmas ladies!
  • We went on a family hike this afternoon, just under 5 miles but I ran around and "raced" with DD so I feel like it counts for something.

I'm excited to be off for the rest of the year and have time to get some runs and workouts in! Gym or Soul Cycle tomorrow.

  • @TheQuietThings Sorry to hear about the RA flare up! I have an autoimmune disorder as well, and it’s amazing how sensitive my body can be to various foods.

Speaking of foods, I’m really not trying to be or sound judgmental... but I have to admit I’m surprised at how few folks on this BMB talk exercise and healthy eating. Maybe its bc of my age (AMA @38) and/or being in NYC (where we are all type As), but EVERYONE keeps stressing to me how critical exercise & a healthy diet are for the pregnancy, Labor, recovery post birth and health of the baby...

@pretzellover it really is.  I have to be diligent about tomato products.   I can do BBQ sauce as a dip, but no,spaghetti sauce or fresh tomatoes.  No tomato juice, etc. Gluten and dairy are best to be restricted, but first tri is proving that to be difficult, so I'm experiencing some inflammation.  Not to mention I'm off all my RA meds.   Historically, I do well pregnant and breastfeeding.   Typically go back on a DMARD around 6 months PP. My sister is TTC and her disease is very progressive.  She'll likely stay on as many meds as possible.  Sorry.  Tangent!

I guess I just assume more people exercise regularly, just perhaps not in such a rigorous routine as some of us.  Or maybe 'fit' is off putting.   I lift heavy and exercise regularly, but I'm still a marshmallow
(ETA: ) unless I eat lean and clean.  Maybe more don't want to participate in a check in?  I don't participate in some of the check ins or weekly post because of the long format/questions.  I'm glad we don't do that on this one!

  • @pretzelloverI think eating healthy and working out can be hard to focus on with all the other stuff people can have going on (morning sickness, anxiety, pains, pregnancy after a loss etc.)

That being said I do think eating well and staying active it super important during pregnancy. I cook a lot from scratch, eat fresh fruit and veggies, aim to get 10k steps a day and workout when I can. However, even though I'm fit, used to eating clean, and from an area where clean eating, organic food and a healthy life style are the norm sometimes burritos and pizza happen.

Also, I'm a STM and during my last pregnancy I caved in and had "bad" food more than I'm sure is recommended, it was fine! I was at a healthy weight in the beginning and gained 25-30lbs. I'm convinced a chunk of it was swelling from being out in the heat a ton at the end. I came home from the hospital full of energy and 5lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. I watch the sugar and processed junk but try not to stress too much about calories.

  • @TheQuietThings Sorrry you and your sister have it so rough! I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disorder back in 2009, and via an elimination diet learned I’m very sensitive to onions, corn, wheat, peanuts, eggplant & tomatoes. It’s not easy to try and regularly avoid the lot of them! I hope you get back to feeling yourself again very soon!

@runsomewhere I totally understand & agree that pizza and burritos and sweets happen (I indulge myself!); I think its about moderation in diet and participation in regular exercise. I’m at a healthy weight (5’6; 125), and yet my doctor has been really vocal about trying to get 30 min of cardio everyday if possible...so I’m trying my best. (When I’ve been up most of the night & feel terrible, I remember seeing that exercise can make the baby smarter & healthier and I drag my ass out of bed!).
I hope I feel and look as good as it sounds like you did after your 1st! That would be amazing.
