Does your baby have one or several? Is it affecting your feedings?
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

Re: Lip / tongue ties and breastfeeding

  • Thanks for posting!

I am curious now....I have been really trying to work on LO's latch and now the latch looks right from the outside, but my nipple still comes out squashed every time. But her out lips are flared, wipe gape before the latch and the angle of her lips is right. It is still super painful on the left side too....the lactation consultant told me the latch looked right on the outside too....but Idk what is going on. She also definitely has a two-tone tongue...but not sure what that means....
  • Mine always comes back out squished, hurts to begin with then I feel nothing. LO may have a tie of some sort but he eats well so I won't be fixing it. DD had an upper lip tie, she fixed it the natural way, by falling.

  • I spent several hours with the LC in the hospital who found a posterior tongue tie. He wouldn’t latch and was tongue thrusting my nipple back out as well as trying to put his tongue on top. We were scheduled to get it lasered and then saw my pedi who is also LC. She did a huge evaluation and his tie isn’t effecting anything. He apparently learned to suck hid thumb wrong in utero and now can’t suck right to feed. He doesn’t taco his tongue right and would just destroy my nipples trying.

She has us doing suck training on a pacifier as well as bottle during feeds and we also do tmj massage. Maybe someday he can go back to the breast but probably not after being trained on a bottle and getting his breast milk much faster that way even tho he constantly tries to root to the breast when hungry

I had a lip tie as a kid (you could see from the gap between my two front teeth) and a dentist revised it to do veneers for me after I had adult braces. DH had a gap also, and I have heard of many friends who struggled with BF until diagnosis. Anyway, DS was born and right away I noticed he looked like me. So weirdly enough, the second thing I did when I woke up in recovery was to check his lips. I saw the tie right away and mentioned it to everyone who asked about BF - the nurses, LCs, etc. It was confirmed and then we got a referral for a pediatric surgeon who can remove it. My poor nipples sometimes!! He can take a long time for him to latch or to empty a breast. In fact, I often have to pump a little before a feeding because my boob/s is/are too hard. DH was very against pacifiers, but I explained how the Wubbanubs are helping with his latch and sucking and he also saw self soothing and its effects (Mom and Dad get more sleep). Here the little guy is.
