Infertility

January 2018 IVF

Hi! Anyone else out there doing a January 2018 IVF? We are TTC #1 and this will be my first IVF, so I'm feeling anxious. The process doesn't scare me as much as the financial aspect. (We've done 6 IUIs and they have involved injectables, and I have been going to the clinic for quite a while, so the process doesn't seem so intimidating. ) Scheduling appointments does make me nervous too with my schedule as a 3rd grade teacher.
I started BCP today, which made me feel sort of sad because it takes away any possibility for us to be the couple that magically gets pregnant right before IVF. :(  I start stims on January 2nd. That will be quite the way to kick off the new year! I hope we can support each other as we go through this!

Re: January 2018 IVF

  • I will be doing IVF in January (unless something changes more info on why it might not happen below)!  I will be scheduling my IVF consultation (will be in December) sometime this week after I find out when my work trip is going to be so I don't accidentally schedule when I will be out of the country!

So January isn't 100% definite yet because I had a uterine septum removed on 11/7 and while my doctor is all but certain she got most of it.  She wanted to get as much of it as possible but at the very least wanted it to be less than 1 cm long (It was 1.4 cm to start, not huge and not necessarily going to affect IVF but we figured if we were going to be spending thousands of dollars on IVF we wanted to start with the best conditions possible) so we wont know for sure if it is until I have another saline ultrasound in December (which will be scheduled at the start of my next cycle).

I'm in the same boat as you with not having the possibility of a surprise natural pregnancy before IVF because we aren't allowed to have unprotected sex until January (because my doctor requires 2 months to allow the uterus to heal before becoming pregnant).

Since our consultation isn't until December sometime I don't know for sure when I will be starting stims or anything but I'm super excited to find out!

I was super nervous about the financial implications of IVF this summer but then hubs found out that his insurance covers infertility treatments up to $50k lifetime and we have only a small amount of it so far for his testing when we found out that he had MFI as we paid for all 3 of our IUIs out of pocket (we only did 3 because he has a low count and we knew there was only a small chance of them being successful and we can't do IVF until 2018 since I'm not on his insurance this year).

Luckily I work in IT and my bosses are super flexible with me if I need to make doctors appointments so I'm not super worried about those I'm just worried about how many there will be since my RE is 45 minutes away from my house and it's a PITA to drive over there all the time but it's worth it!

  • I still have to call this week too, and set up appointment times/my nurse consult. They have me on the IVF calendar, I just need to schedule that initial consult and a sperm penetration assay for DH. They aren't sure if his sperm can penetrate anything, since everything with our IUIs looked so perfect, but we always got a BFN.
That's gotta be stressful, not knowing if you will for sure be able to start in January. Hopefully it'll work out! Thinking positive thoughts for your December saline ultrasound (I know it's hard sometimes to think positive thoughts for our own situation :)

  • @efavell02 YAY for January IVF's! I was just put on the schedule for January. Nurse said I should be starting stims around January 6th.

I'm also worried about work timing as well. My boss just quit and we are already a little short in the office. Praying I get a new boss soon because I'm considering cutting my hours way back or more part-time from January - March...not knowing when I'll need off for retrieval exactly.

Financial part makes me nervous too. We took a break this Summer trying to decide on our next steps. The Pharmacy also made me pass out when they told me how much my meds alone were going to be lol We decided we just wanted to get the retrieval out of the way since we have to do FET with PGS and told it could be a 2 1/2 - 3 month process.

Happy to have you girls along in the journey!  <3

  • I might be doing IVF in January as well. It depends on quite a few things at this point. My office closes for a few weeks for the holidays. I’m supposed to be on BCP for three weeks as well. As long as my cycle behaves and lines up with the office closure I will start stims early January. If not, I won’t start BCP until January and I get pushed to February. I just want to start!!
  • I know! It just want to get it all going. I feel like I’ve waited long enough. Haha. I set up my appointments and nurse consult today. So. Many. Appointments! Also set up DH’s sperm penetration assay to see if we need ICSI. Anybody else have to do that test? It’s sort of expensive (around 500) but not as expensive as some other tests I guess.

  • @efavell02 Best of luck! We haven't been asked to have that assay done. We do have to do bloodwork next month for genetic stuff to see if we are carriers of anything. It wouldn't shock me if they added that in last minute.

  • @marfi236 hey! I too have a septum that needs to be removed however they are doing the egg retrieval next month then I’m having my surgery end of Dec/ beginning of Jan probably have to sit out a cycle or two to heal then hoping for a Feb transfer but if it’s March we’re ok with that too

@kristimh80 HEYY!! So we have our genetic consult Wed morning to see if we’re carriers of anything.

@efavell02 Yup we need ICSI Bc of SOs 0% morph ICSI will bypass all that. I think It is covered under insurance Bc if the MFI.
  • @ndz2018 I hope your removal goes super smoothly!

@marfi236 how was the surgery? I wont be having mine till after the egg retrieval or possible in Jan...I’m curious on what to expect?
@kristimh80 Thanks! Things are moving quickly!
  • @marfi236 I think they are having us do it because of the suspected, but not confirmed MFI. I also wonder though if they are just trying to get more money out of us....   That being said, we are doing the guarantee program, and depending on whether or not we need ICSI will help us decide which guarantee to do (the lower cost or higher cost one.)
Anyone else doing a guarantee program? We are just in case IVF doesn't work for us, we would get the money back for adoption. What do you guys think of those programs? I know most people that qualify for them usually don't benefit from them.

@ndz2018 My surgery was not bad at all.  I had it done on a Tuesday, November 7th in the afternoon (surgery started around 2:30 pm if I remember correctly) and I was home by 7 pm that night.  After the procedure I had a balloon in my uterus to keep it from healing together and I had it in until the following Monday, November 13th.  I didn't have a drainage bag or anything connected to the balloon, there was just a little tubing that was connected to it but it didn't hang outside my body.  The balloon is likely what caused the cramping because after I had it removed I had no more issues with pain or cramping.

I had some pain the day of, they gave me a percocet at the hospital after the procedure and sent me home with some more and some high dose acetaminophen and I never had to take the percocet, and I only needed the acetaminophen once a day (for whatever reason I would always get pretty bad cramps in the evening).  My RE had me taking Doxycycline to prevent infection while the balloon was in and it caused me to have nausea pretty much the whole time I was taking it.

I don't know if you're planning on taking time off from work after your surgery but I would take at least one day just to relax.  My doctor said I could go back to work the next day but I didn't and I'm really glad I did, that was the day that I was the most uncomfortable.  I actually took the rest of the week off not because of pain or anything but because I had extra PTO to take before the end of the year and I figured I may as well use it then!

@efavell02 We're not doing a guarantee but that's mainly because our insurance will cover a couple cycles if we have to do more than 2 cycles then we will have to look into one!

  • Hi! I’ll be a Jan IVF. I just did my first cycle and got no viable embryos. BUT. Also had a wonky cycle with some weird stuff happening. We are 100% out of pocket so I suspect if we don’t see something a lot more positive, this will be our last attempt. Skipping December so that I’m not stuck home for the holidays for monitoring. (All of my family lives far away.)

    I am 37, 38 next month.
  • @marfi236 Thank you! Now I’ll know what to expect! And they had you sit out two cycles? Is that normal? I obviously want to heal as best I can but since we’re doing our egg retrieval in dec prior to the surgery I’m gonna start getting antsy lol.
  • @efavell02 We aren't doing that program. We looked into doing Attain's multi-cycle, but my husband wasn't on board, even though I liked the idea of multiple chances. Our financial advisor didn't think we needed it, but only time will tell! :)

@Happyin14 Welcome!! So sorry things didn't work out in your last attempt! Our labs are closed most of December for the Holidays, so we were pushed to January. I told DH it's kind of a relief not to have to mess with meds, shot times and dr appt.'s as well during the busy holiday season. January seems like the perfect good start to a new year <3

@efavell02 I didnt even know that existed! I guess because I never Looked. My insurance is covering 4 IVF cycles.. but insurance doesn’t cover a few things, cryopresevation, biopsy and CCS are running us about $5200, insurance covers everything else. Even all my meds are only $124. I am so grateful for this coverage...if we didn’t have it I don’t know if we would’ve jumped right into it like this. we also need ICSI Bc of SOs low count which seems to be covered Bc of the MFI.
  • I’m so jealous of the insurance coverage!! Haha. You’d think teachers would get better infertility coverage.

  • @kristimh80 I have actually looked up their policies in insurance coverage. Lol When I brought it up to my husband he just looked at me like I was crazy to try and fit a teacher schedule with a part time job. He’s probably right. It would be too much time and stress.

  • @efavell02. Don’t feel bad my husband is a doctor and we don’t have any insurance coverage for IVF. I’ve seriously considered Starbucks, but no way I can take on a part time job.

We we are not doing a guarantee program. With our diagnosis and age my doctor doeant think we will need multiple rounds. Plus it’s almost double the cost of one round.
  • So I found out today that my work trip is going to be next week (I'm super excited about this trip!  Going to the UK!) so I called and got my IVF consultation appointment scheduled.  It's going to be on December 8th which is right on track for our plan.  RE says she likes to see patients at least a month before they plan to do IVF and we can't even start trying to get pregnant until January 7th (that's 2 months after my surgery) so it all works out!

  • @ndz2018 I think it depends on the RE.  Mine says she likes to wait 2 months to be totally sure it's healed.  I was chatting with someone (I don't remember if it was here on the bump or on a different forum) and she only had to wait a month.

For us it didn't make a difference, this year hubs and I are on separate insurance plans (each through our own work, it was a little bit cheaper then doing either of our plans together) so I won't be on his insurance until January 1st so that's the earliest we can start the main IVF stuff.  We can do our consult and everything now because she just codes it as a consult so it's covered under my insurance (I have no infertility coverage whatsoever).

  • Just had our nurse consult today. Whew! It was a lot of information. The weirdest things was filing out the forms about what happens to any remaining frozen embryos in the event of death or divorce. So wierd.

I feel better though with more info about the whole meds process and financial process. It makes me feel less anxious.

  • @kristimh80 I literally just filled them out online this past weekend, right after the dr called me to say we are doing the IVF she sent them a few hours later.
  • @kristimh80 I bet you will fill them out then. We did the med demonstration today but there’s no way I’ll remember how to fill the menopur syringe. Good thing they have a video online.

Went and bought the meds today for enough stims through to day 7. Hopefully I won’t have to buy much more...

  • @efavell02 How exciting!! Thank goodness for online videos...I know I'll be all over the place trying to remember / figure it all out too! I've done Follistim...luckily that's easy. I did see girls say with menopur that after mixing, if you let it sit for a few minutes that it doesn't burn as much. Thought I'd mention that. I'm trying to remember all the tips to make everything easier :)

  • Hello!  We are planning a January FET and I'm getting so excited!

    Backstory (trigger warning)

I am 40 and my husband is 41.  I had a cancer diagnosis at age 35, froze embryos just before starting 20 rounds of chemo.   All is well with me.  Got the OK to move ahead with IVF 3 years after the cancer diagnosis.  Only 2 embryos survived the freeze, and only one of those was chromosomally normal.  We tried to get more eggs, but had a cycle cancelled after I had no ovarian response.  Went forward with an FET in 7/16, which was unsuccessful.  My sister began the process to become an egg donor for us.  In mid September 2016, discovered that I had gotten pregnant 3 weeks after the failed FET in some combo of ovulating one last egg at the wrong time in my cycle, combined with my body not shedding the FET-induced lining like it was supposed to.  My RE tells me to buy a lottery ticket, and my surprise miracle baby arrived in 5/17.

We continued to move forward with the donor egg process with my sister, since we want 2 kids.  She donated when I was 38 weeks pregnant.  We had one embryo survive to blast, and it tested chromosomally normal.  It's a girl, and she is ready to go.

My OB wants at least 18 months between deliveries (I had a C section), so we are starting meds on December 10 for an anticipated ~January 22-28 transfer.

So excited to be finally getting this show on the road!! I LOVED being pregnant and really hope I get to experience that again.  With my particular cancer, I have a very high risk of developing ovarian cancer in the future, so my ovaries are coming out during my C section and this will be our final baby.  We get one more shot at this.  Really hoping we can make this work!  Also, our good friends JUST found out that they are pregnant after multiple IUIs and their first FET.  It would be so awesome to be pregnant at the same time!!  They are out of state and through a different RE but we've been friends for decades and would love to have kids the same age.

Me: Age 40  Husband: Age 41
Chemo killed my ovaries (along with a BRCA1 mutation, which causes DOR)
4/30/13 ER just prior to chemo: 8 embryos frozen at 2pn. 2 survived to blasts/1 PGS normal

    4/16 ER cancelled on CD7: 1 follicle on L/ 0 follicles on R
    FET #1  7/13/16  BFN

    Super shocker +HPT 9/19
    Baby Alyce arrived 5/8/17

Went forward with donor eggs from my sister for baby #2
ER 4/24, 5 eggs fertilized/1 survived to blast and was chromosomally normal.

    FET 2/15 (my sister/donor's birthday!).  Beta 10dp5dt:172; beta 12dp5dt: 425

  • Hello everyone.  Sorry, I am trying to read all the posts so far, but it may take me awhile to catch up.
I am scheduled for my first IVF early January.  We have already done 3 failed IUIs.  We already had our consult and today we went in for my uterine mapping, DH had to do another SA, and our meeting with the psychologist (part of our clinic's IVF package...just a one time thing).  I should be getting my protocol in the mail within a week, but already talked dates with the nurse.

I am looking forward to sharing this journey with you ladies!

@efavell02 I am also more worried about the financial aspect of the whole process...I mean, I almost had a panic attack in the dealership when I bought my last car and I knew I would walk out of there with a vehicle.....so this is a nerve-wracking expense

  • @PNW12RN WOW that’s one helluva story!! So awesome your using your sisters egg!! Love it!

  • I have a tentative retrieval date of January 10th!! I’m on BCP until Christmas and then start my injections the day after Christmas.  They are freezing all our embryos so I will do a FET sometime in March. I honestly can’t believe it’s actually happening. I told DH that with all the waiting it’s like it’s never going to happen. I go in next week for paperwork and the how to on injections. Anyone have this appointment yet? If so any surprises you had that you wish you would have known about ahead of time?
  • @J1006 I am expecting my appointment very soon as we are doing a Dec retrieval! (Having a septum removed from my uterus late Dec/early Jan so it’s looking like a March FET for us too!) AF should start next week sometime! I’m guessing by the end of this week we will get our protocol.
  • @hoffmanr7 Exciting!!! We will be starting stims early January, so will be up for retrieval around mid-January. I feel you on the financial part...when the pharmacy called with my meds total...I was at work and needed a minute to catch my breath! lol

@J1006 We will probably be doing a March transfer as well as my dr only does FET as well. Sounds like we'll be close in schedule with everything.

  • @hoffmanr7 Welcome! We just finished up a similar round of tests. One bright spot is that we had already done an saline infused sonogram during an iui cycle to check for polyps, so insurance covered it (we don’t have coverage though for anything related to IVF)

@kristimh80 why does your dr only do FETs? If you don’t mind me asking :)
