STM- when did you give birth?

As a FTM I’m slowly but surely preparing for labor. For some reason it just dawned on me that although I always hear ‘first babies run late!’ There is still the chance to go early too. Interested to hear from you!

  • 39 and 36 weeks. Both medical intervention for various reasons.

@SunflowerMama428 thanks for sharing that because so many of the IVF moms I know / see in Facebook/Insta seem to deliver early! It seems rare to go past due date with IVF. My first child was conceived naturally and I was induced a few days after my due date. I will be a repeat c-section for this baby (conceived with IVF) and my OB said they will discuss a c-section date a week before my due date. I just feel like it will be earlier than my due date for some reason.

  • 1st: 6 days early, 2nd: 1 day early, 3rd: 4 days early.

My sister is on #5 and hers have all come late or on their due date. I think it's more how the mom gestates and not babies' birth order.
  • DS was born 2 days early

DD was born 6 days early. She was born 3 days after DS’s second birthday party, and I wonder if all that work/stress put me in labor bc I def started early labor the night of his party lol.

  • I was induced at 41+4 with my first.
  • I was almost 2 weeks late with DD. I actually went into labor 12 hours before I was scheduled to be induced (because they didn't want her to be in there past 42 weeks). I had no idea I was in labor because I was in back labor and just got this awful back ache that got worse and worse. When I finally called OB after 3 hours they basically yelled at me "YOU'RE IN LABOR GO TO THE HOSPITAL!" lol

  • Dd1: Induction planned at 38w4d, but ended up being induced at 37w6d following a quick visit with my midwife. I was still 5 cm and 80% effaced, as I was a week before, but she wasn't comfortable sending me home. I was induced later that night.

Dd2: Induced at 39 weeks. Like with dd1, I was 5 cm when my midwife decided it was best to keep me, but beds weren't available for a while, so I just waited and walked the halls. By the time I was admitted and checked I was 6 cm, but no labor, as I suspected.

Ds1: Planned a homebirth, but ended up being induced at the hospital at 35 weeks.

Ds2: Planned a home water birth and knew we'd induce once I hit full term. Ex-h came home on R&R leave on Christmas Day, and we induced the following day. I had also been 5 cm and 80% effaced for a week and my midwife lived 45 minutes away. I precip and we needed to have the birth tub prepped and filled before labor kicked in.

Dd3: Planned home water birth. Membranes started leaking the evening of 38w2d, a first ever for me (membranes were bulging, so it made sense), and induced the following day, 17 hours later since there was no labor in sight and I was getting impatient. I had been 5 cm, 80% effaced and 0 station for a week.

With four of my five, spontaneous labor could have kicked in sooner or later, but due to the nature of precip, inducing in a controlled/planned environment was the best route. I kept birth kits at home and in the car with my last two and was so anxious about being more than 10 minutes from home and baby falling out at Target. Lol

lol, I was so sick of people (especially in DH's family) telling me how late I was going to run with my first! They all started chorusing at 38 weeks "oh, settle in, you've got another 4 weeks to go!" ::eyeroll::  I am a first-born, and was 5 weeks early. Everyone is different  :)

My water broke in the middle of the night four days before my due date.

  • Both boys were delivered via scheduled csection (breech) at 39w5d. Neither of them were ready to come out on their own. I was not dilated or anything with either one so there is an excellent chance I would have been late with both.
  • 40 + 2 with DD. Scheduled for induction two days later but blood pressure woes made them keep me and say it was time to throw in the towel.

    9 days early DS 2 (9 lbs)
  • Scheduled induction at 41w1d with DD
water broke at 38w1d with DS

  • Both my first and second were 3 days past my due date
  • Induced because of preeclampsia at 36w3d with DS1
DS2 came at 38 weeks on his own.  I was the same @precious88 with just a back ache.  No idea it was labor until I sent my nurse a text joking about my back hurting.

I’m a little worried with this little guy because I don’t really know what going into labor feels like.

I didn’t know I was in labor until my water broke. I just wasn’t have strong contractions. It felt like a twinge every few minutes but then I wanted to go to bed and my water broke when I laid down. The contractions quickly picked up after that but I was in early labor I guess all day. I went for monitoring that day because I was late and the nurse asked me if I was feeling anything because it looked like i was contracting according to the screen but I laughed and said no lol

When I told them my back hurt she told me I was probably in labor and to come get checked.  I was at work and it was lunchtime.  I made DH stop at McDonalds for fries and a Diet Coke before we went.  I didn’t think I could really be in labor because it didn’t even really hurt.   6 hours later I was holding DS2.
  • 6 days earlier with DS, praying for the same to happen on LO
  • This is really interesting to read as a FTM- I hear alllll the time "get cozy, you'll be pregnant for at least 40w + "
everyone seems to believe that all first time moms deliver late, but the other 2 pregnan women at my office recently delivered pretty early- 34 weeks and 36 weeks. So when anyone starts with me, I'm not listening. Babies are unpredictable!
  • 39 weeks with both girls.
  • I went into labor on my own at 40w 5d, exactly at midnight my water broke. It was like Cinderella or something. 5 1/2 hours later, my son was born. I was having mild contractions the day prior, but was checked out and told they were false labor and braxton hicks and I was not dilated at all when I was seen at 1 pm. They said I likely had another week before real labor would start. I was showing no signs of impending labor. Once my water broke, my false labor contractions went from 15-30 minutes apart to 2 minutes apart, consistently.
  • Went into labor with DD 4 days before my due date. They also say first labors are long, but mine was 3 hours from the time water broke at home to having her in my arms in the hospital. Every baby and every woman is different!
  • It's nice to hear I'm not the only one who didn't know I was in labor! Everyone who'd given birth would just say, "Oh, you'll KNOW when you're in labor" when I was pg with DD and worried about knowing when labor started. And after I had her, every mom I've told just looked at me like I was crazy when I told them I had no idea.

So FTMs, you are NOT crazy for wondering how you'll know. I don't say that to stress anyone out, I say that to let you know your feelings are valid. I'm actually really relieved I get to just go in for my RCS at 39 weeks instead of playing the waiting game again.
    All of this!

One of the things that annoyed me the most even as a S+TM was the "Oh, you'll know. It will feel like..." and while I get that reflects the average or norm, it certainly isn't universal. I had the exact same questions with my fourth and fifth, and my midwife with my youngest thought it was amusing. In a way it was, but I was being serious, and I knew she couldn't really tell me, but it definitely played a part in how I planned and prepared (was planning another home water birth). I don't really experience labor or much of the process, and was anxious about being away from home when I suddenly got that feeling of immense pressure followed by sudden descent and birth. I kept a birth kit and tons of towels in my car as a "just in case" measure.

We ended up inducing the day after my membranes started leaking, and even after contractions started, I was still unconvinced. They were like BH and not consistent, strong or painful. I had a constant dull backache that started the week before and pelvic floor pressure, but the contractions were very manageable, so I was certain it was prodromal labor, which I had the previous week. I relaxed in the birth tub for 35 minutes before my midwife checked me and we discovered I was 8 cm and she was near crowing. Surprise! Complete shock. My midwife could feel contractions, but they didn't register on my end, and less than five minutes later she was born. She later told me she thought it was prodromal labor again and they'd leave and come back when it was time, until she did the check. She and her apprentice really did have to see it to believe. I kept telling them that "labor" doesn't register until transition or moments before birth for me. At no point before the VE did I think it was actual labor.

I'll be induced again if I don't somehow go on my own and the hospital is only a mile from us. I'm just more anxious about getting there in time because of the precip and previous PPH.

  • I was induced on my due date due to a failed NST and she was born 16hrs after inductuon.

I actually had a great experience being induced, so would definitly.do it again if necessary.
  • I find it so interesting that this poll trends toward "prior to due date," since everyone says first moms are more likely to go late (and I think I've read multiple places that average delivery for first time moms is 41&1).  Just goes to show you that while statistics are helpful, no person is a statistic and every pregnancy/labor/delivery is going to be different!

I have a question for third time moms and beyond -- did you go earlier with your second baby than you did your first? My first was a late-term preemie, and while I'm prepared for the likely scenario that this one comes early again, my doctor has also cautioned that it could go either way!

Not me but my sister's 3rd was born 4 hours after she went into labor. Her 4th was almost delivered in the car. LOL The nurses at her hospital didn't believe she was that close. Less than 30 minutes after she was admitted she delivered.

  • @psm2462 My first came 6 days early with 2 days of solidlying timed contractions. My second came 1 day early with maybe 6 hours of solidly timed contractions. My third came 4 days early with about 10 hours of solidly timed contractions.

My second was by far my easiest labor. I was 8.5 cm when I got to the hospital.
  • @psm2462 I don’t know if i count to answer your question but I delivered at 39 weeks, exactly one week prior to all three of my due dates. My water broke with DD1. With DD2 it was a fast and furious delivery but I had major complications hours after. With DD3 i sat at 4cm dilated for four weeks and delivered at 39 weeks and that delivery was also fast, like three hours total. I sort of know now that I have fast deliveries. I guess in essence it just depends on your body and your baby! I have a friend that delivered at 38 weeks with their first and 41 with their second.
