Re: Questions - week of 11/12

  • I know this has been asked sometime before in some past thread, but I don't know when or where so apologies for the repeat. For anyone who has had an anterior placenta: when did you start to feel regular movement? If you had a vaginal delivery, was the baby sunny side up? I have my first one and know it's not any big deal, but I'm just wondering what to expect.

  • @lindsye I had an AP with my last 2 pregnancies. I started feeling regular movement around 22ish weeks. Although I had a c-section with both, I labored with both. DS was in the normal position, but DD was sunny side up.

I have an anterior placenta this time.  I suspect I did with both my other kids too b/c they both were sunny side up at delivery.  I was able to have my son vaginally, but my daughter was a c-section after 2 hours of pushing.  Doctor said I'm fine for trying a VBAC, so I probably will.

I think I started feeling consistent movement around 20 weeks with my past pregnancies.  I'm starting to feel more movement now, but it's inconsistent.  Yesterday I felt a ton, today, I haven't felt much.  I've been told that by 22-24 weeks it becomes pretty constant.

  • @lindsye I have an AP, the doc hasn't said anything about the baby being sunny side up. I never even thought about it, I don't even know where it was last time.
  • @lindsye I had one in my first.  I didn't feel moment until around 20-22 weeks.  Honestly I can't remember how she came out, I don't think it was sunny side up.

  • Is anyone else starting to feel really uncomfortable? Rolling over last night was a workout! Babies must be crowding my lungs today, as I’m short of breath. Only 5 more months  :D

Yes! Sleeping is becoming difficult for me already. I think I am starting to have the round ligament pain that people speak of so I get these stabby sensations. This is also really weird but... I have been having this "wooshing" sound in my ear when I lay on my side. It sounds like I can hear my heart beating. It's really annoying and idk if it's a pregnancy symptoms or not but I just started noticing it at night when I lay down to go to bed and as soon as I wake up.
  • @g_amoss YES!!!!!  I'm so uncomfortable I can just never get in a good position.

  • @g_amoss yep, right there with ya. sleeping sucks. Also noticing it takes a lot more effort to get up from sitting on the floor or hoisting myself out of a deep couch, lol. And the weirdest thing lately is this urge to pee but not actually needing to pee (usually happens after I’ve already gone). Maybe baby is pushing on my bladder? No other symptoms so I don’t suspect an infection and I know baby is sitting pretty low but didnt expect that this early!

  • @lindsye on my third pregnancy with an AP (WTF is with my body? Are some uteruses just more prone with AP??). DS was a C/S so I'm not sure about his position... no one ever said anything other than he wasn't dropping, no comments about face up/down. I had a VBAC with DD and she was not sunny side up. I felt movement with both around 20 weeks. This pregnancy I felt movement last week for the first time, so around 17 weeks, and have been feeling flutters pretty routinely since then.

  • @frenchiekinplusone I have the urge to pee and actually need to sometimes like 10 minutes after going wahhh
  • @stassischroeder HI!!! Yes! That’s exactly when it happens and it drives me crazy. It feels like a pinching feeling for me.
  • @lindsye my last pregnancy and this pregnancy I had an AP.  I'm 20 weeks and now really starting to feel some movement.  My DD was sunnyside up too.  I don't have anything to compare it to since I've only given birth once but I had a whole lot of back labor.

@frenchiekinplusone this is weird but I have the urge to pee when I don't have to when I need to drink more water.  When my urine is darker (which is how I know I need to drink more) is usually when I get that sensation.

@stassischroeder good to see you around!

  • @JJMNO1616 and @stassischroeder yes!! Totally getting the stabbing type pain randomly everyday the last 4-5 days when I strech a certain way or move my torso a certain way. It's always right near my belly button. I've never had this with my other 2 pregnancies (this is my 3rd) and it is freaking me out! Like sometimes I jump or ever scream. Lol. It's startles the crap out of me!!

I also have an AP. Haven't been feeling a ton of movement so I'm assuming that's why. Just turned 19 weeks Saturday.
  • What is "sunny side up?"  ....when not referring to eggs, haha.

When the baby travels down the birth canal, the favorable position is face-down (face towards mother's back).  Sunny side up refers to the baby being flipped and coming out with it's face up (facing towards mother's front).

It usually causes a LOT of back pain for the mother to deliver that way.

What @ngolimento said. Also, you can definitely have a baby positioned that way without an AP too - my first was not an AP but the back labor I had with her (before she turned) was worse than any contractions I had on pitocin. Back labor is definitely no joke.  :#

  • @JJMNO1616 I've been having that whooshing heartbeat sound occasionally when lying down too. I worried it was high blood pressure but they have been fine so I just assume it's due to higher blood volumes? None of the books mention that as a symptom so it's good to know others are experiencing the same!
  • Anyone find any good maternity clothes sites? Especially on the search for a warm winter coat that isn’t hideous since I’m in New York and my current coat is about 1 week away from not being able to be zippered!
  • Hmmm, so I totally had back labor with DD...for...hours.... It was horrific and the only comfortable position was on my hands and knees, but she didn't deliver face up. Does that mean she was probably face up then flipped during labor?!

  • @julzy there was just a big convo about this in last week’s questions thread, I think it’s from 11/6? Might want to check that out.
  • @ladythrice I wouldn't be surprised - the nurses confirmed that my DD was sunny side up for most of my labor (and when I was having back labor) but thankfully she turned before delivery.

  • @lindsye I had an anterior placenta with DS and didn't feel movements until 23 weeks, but he wasn't sunny side up when it came time to deliver.

    @stassischroeder welcome back!

Yep!  Baby can flip at almost any point before birth.  It has scientists scratching their heads something awful, because almost nothing they've tried can either predict or influence it (including studies where a bunch of pregnant chicks spent 10 mins a day on hands and knees).

ETA: one of the big indicators that you have a sunny side up baby is that labor feels a TON better on your hands and knees too.

  • @lindsye I had an AP with DS and felt movement around 20-22 weeks (don't remember exactly when). I will say it took a lot longer to feel big movements, though. I already feel stronger kicks with this one than I did with him at like 25-30 weeks. He wasn't sunny-side up and delivery itself was easy-peasy despite the long labor.

@g_amoss Yes so uncomfortable already! This morning I was at the school's book fair and I could hardly breathe just standing around. I almost panicked, but after walking around a bit things settled and I could catch my breath. And I only have one baby in there, so I can just imagine how crammed things are getting for you with two!

I have a question about weight gain. Not complaining about overall gain as it's been pretty minimal until now, but all of a sudden I've gained 3.5 pounds in the past week. Is that excessive in that time-frame, or should I just consider it a growth spurt? My next ob appointment isn't for two more weeks.

  • @kaymaroo, I'm of the opinion that all weight gain is relatively normal. At least... that's what I'm telling myself this pregnancy lol. With DS and DD1 I gained little weight in my first 20 weeks, less than five pounds each, and the bulk of my weight in the latter 20 weeks (20-30 pounds). Let's just say I'm not on that trajectory at the moment and part of me wonders if that's 'normal?' I think it is. I'm not being excessive and gorging myself... but I do enjoy the occasional treat. I rid our house of Halloween candy and am doing a health challenge with some friends for November and December (improve my eating habits and get moving again) to avoid excessive weight gain during the holidays. I'm hoping that actually moving again (I've been awful since getting pregnant) will go a long way to helping me out. I'm now shooting for 8-10k steps a day. My average for this pregnancy has been 4k.... yikes!

  • Ahh thanks @ngolimento.  That was my guess, but I didn't think it made a difference as long as they were head down.  I had zero back labor, it was all in the front but it was pretty unbearable.  I have no idea how he came out though.

@kaymaroo I'm thinking normal.  With my first, it took me a while to gain, but ended up at 40 lbs.   This time, within the first month after my positive test (less than a month)  I gained 7 lbs.  And 5 more after that before the next appt.  I was sooooo unhappy.  Like...I probably gained around 20 already and I'm only 20 Wks next week.

  • Thanks @ladythrice and @psuxray07. With my first it was a more steady weight gain from the beginning so the sudden gain this time surprised me. As long as it's not something I need to worry about I'm good!

  • @kaymaroo I gained a lot at the beginning of the 2nd trimester with my 1st, I had gained 9 lbs between one 4 week doctor appointment. This happened to coincide with the holidays.   It freaked me out but then weight gain dramatically slowed during 3rd trimester so it evened out.
  • @ladythrice I am averaging around 4k steps too. I wish it wasn't so cold here already because besides randomly pacing my house I don't know what else I'm going to do.

  • @lindsye I just learned yesterday at my anatomy scan that I have an AP, although I figured as much since I didn’t feel movement as early with this one as I did with DS. I’ve been feeling consistant movement for a week now so it started at 19 weeks for me, but my LO is super active just like DS was. The scan also showed that baby was head down, super low, and facing my back. I didn’t know having an AP could impact the baby’s position and labor. That kinda worries me now :o
  • @beena722 I am reassured by reading this thread - looks like lots and lots of mommas with APs ended up having a baby with normal positioning. It still sucks though - I'm 16.5 weeks and would normally be feeling regular small movements but now, the vast majority of the time I feel nothing.  :/ And every ultrasound my baby is moving around a ton too. Darn you, anterior placenta!

  • Add me to the AP club... I'm still not feeling consistant movement and I'll be 21 weeks tomorrow. Sigh. Baby was moving all over at the A/S though :)
It's funny though, the U/S tech must have had them mixed up, because I asked about my placenta position and she said it was anterior, which was why she was surprised I wasn't feeling more movement.

  • I know there is BF and a FF thread so I didn't want to start a new one. But, are there any STM's who BF the first time, had a difficult time and are struggling with what to do this time?

MH wants me to at least try BF and see how it goes. While that is obviously what I want to do, I'm just not sure it's worth the stress.
