PSA- Several stores recall vegetables due to listeria risk

Not trying to cause extra worry, but wanted to get the word out to those who shop at Meijer and bought vegetables. They don't have any reported illness cases yet, but are doing the recall due to possible contamination. The states are Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Indiana.

  • Holy cats. I didn't see that list yet, thank you.
  • @suchaglencoco, can you edit the title of the post?  I almost skipped reading it because I don't shop at Meijer, and I think it's a good article for people to read.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! We shop at Meijer and live in IL. I bought the packed broccoli and cauliflower that is mentioned in the recall a couple weeks ago but never ended up eating it, thankfully!
  • @tacosandvirginmargaritas, I'm glad you didn't eat any yet!
  • Wow that's a ton of stores impacted. Walmart, Safeway...

  • Whoops, didn't see this and posted about it too! Looks like it's packaged veggies so better to stay fresh right now.
  • Just so I'm clear, the title of the link provided says nationwide.  Is that still referring to only the states in a comment above?  Or is it all states?  I have some broccoli from some of the mentioned stores and I want to make sure I'm safe.

  • Honestly, if you're concerned yours may be tainted,  you should call the store you purchased them at and ask if they're recalling anything. And if there's still a doubt in your mind, I would just throw them out if it were me.
  • It's fine if you cook the vegetables though, right? I mean, I guess maybe not worth the risk for some, but this should only be an issue if eaten raw, correct?

The food has to reach 165 degrees for a certain amount of time. Honestly, why risk it?
  • @Ceridwen21 I personally wouldn't, but I was just wondering, since I know listeria is the main reason we're supposed to cook all those things like lunch meat while pregnant.

Right, things with a low risk/chance of even harboring listeria if purchased from reputable sources. I personally would not purchase something known to be contaminated with listeria and then cook and eat it. Even if I wasn’t pregnant.
  • @Ceridwen77 I totally agree. I was more coming from a perspective that they probably haven't announced every single type of vegetable from every single store, so rather than being my paranoid self and avoid buying any bagged vegetables, I'm going to make sure to cook any I do buy for the next couple of weeks.
