We randomly looked at cars yesterday since my car (although perfectly functional and safe) is getting way up there in mileage. WTF TO KEYLESS IGNITION AND SUCH. This is the most seemingly risky technological advancement ever and it's almost ubiquitous on vehicles made in the last few years unless you buy a base model vehicle which also means you lose all the other updates and safety mechanisms that make someone want a new car in the first place. There are just so many things that I could see going wrong with this. Why do you crazy people love this so much?!!!
@elcd458 i thought that too when we bought out last car... but it is actually the best thing ever. I really wish the used van we bought since then had it, because not having to fish your keys out of your bag to open the door when your hands are full of stuff + baby/toddler is so much easier.
@elcd458 Hahaha, DH's car has keyless entry & ignition and it drives me crazy!! ("What am I supposed to do with these keys? I'm going to lose them!") I just can't make the adjustment. And every time we stop at a store and he goes in/I wait in the car, he forgets to leave his keys because they're in his pocket, and the car starts flipping out at me as soon as he goes out of range. I guess we'll eventually have to embrace the "technology of the future", but like... ew.
@elcd458 I cannot even count the number of times I have tried to jam DH's "key" into the side of his keyless-ignition-car's steering column only to get super frustrated. (But not as frustrated as DH watching me do it.) It's probably 100% of the times that I've driven that car. I also try to turn off the car and remove the keyless key... I just can't get my brain rewired to ignore 20+ years of these muscle memories.
@elcd458 My mom's car has this and I hate going anywhere with her in her car if it's cold or raining because she stands next to her door, it unlocks, she opens it, then she (taking her sweet time, mind you) hits the unlock button for everyone else. Meanwhile I'm standing at the door this whole time like OH MY GOSH JUST LET ME IN.
I prefer remotely unlocking the doors before I get to the car so I can get in immediately! And yes, I know this is a total instant gratification whine and back in the day of having to actually insert your key in the lock, this is just how it was but damn it, I'm not accustomed to waiting to get in the car! Lol.
I just keep thinking that the minor inconvenience of spending 5 seconds fishing around in my bag for my keys does not greatly outweigh the safety of:
-Accidentally forgetting to turn your car off, and dying of carbon monoxide poisoning -Thieves being able to use RF devices to break into and/or drive away with your car -Turning the car off when it isn't in Park and having it roll away -Driving somewhere only to realize you left your key fob at the original location and now your car won't start unless someone comes to your rescue

I mean, it's not that hard to hotwire a car anyway, if they want to steal it. My car won't let you drive off without the key fob. I'm also not sure I could turn it off if it wasn't in park. I've also never forgotten to turn the car off because you can hear it running.

@elcd458@cait5413 I can say from experience that if you hit the power button (at least in a Prius), it does automatically put the car in park. I've done it MANY times, because both buttons have a "P" on them and I tend to hit Power first because it's a bigger button and also I'm an idiot.

How would you forget to turn your car off? This seems just as unlikely as if you has regular keys.
Thieves will steal cars no matter what kind of key you have...
If you turn off your car not in park the dashboard lights up and screams at you, you definitely know.
You wouldn't be able to start the car without the key in the first place so you also wouldn't be able to drive away while leaving it somewhere. Most cars notify you by beeping both internally and externally if the door is closed (even if it is unlocked) but the key is outside of the car. Also you never have to take your key out, so why would it get left behind in the first place?
Another major benefit, should your key fall out of your pocket/purse inside the car as you are leaving, the car will not allow you to accidentally lock your keys inside. Most regular keyed cars only do this if they key is in the ignition.

Most of those fears are pretty unfounded, BUT it does cost an arm and a leg to replace your key if it breaks or you lose it. That's my main fear. I know DHs car won't start unless your foot is on the break and the key is in the car, it beeps incessantly at you if you open the driver door whole the car is on and in park, won't turn off if it's not in park, and automatically shuts off if you have the key with you and leave the car running but get out of range (about 10 feet from the car). DHs car is a 2006, so being 11 years old, I'm sure there are some safety features on the newer cars that are even better. For the record, I still don't like it and would rather have a traditional key
My random for today: DD has gotten to where she won't eat unless we are watching Veggie Tales. Come on kid...you JUST told me you were hungry - sit down and eat! Also, it's weird to eat vegetables while watching a show about vegetables...
@cait5413 I think I'm just going to have to google the user manual of the car we're interested in to see if it has the built-in idiot proof mechanisms to prevent some of that stuff. From what I've read, some vehicles have things in place to prevent these problems, and others don't. For instance, some have an auto shut-off if the car idles more than X amount of time, and some cars or keys will audibly beep if you walk away with the key.
I know it sounds ridiculous, but this happened to a local family a year or so ago-- I think Dad left the car running to run in the house a minute to grab something, and then got distracted and never went back outside. Thankfully they survived but the whole family got really really sick from CO poisoning.
My keyless entry sounds really similar to @skcobb in terms of safety features. It won't let you get the car very far from the fob. As for forgetting to turn it off, it doesn't seem any less dangerous than a traditional key. In the situation above, the dad intentionally left the car running and got distracted. He would have done that whether there was a key or not.

@elcd458 I know that my co-worker's wife dropped him off and then took the car to run errands--he had the key in his pocket, so when she got out of the store, she couldn't start the car! Our car wouldn't let you do that, though. It beeps as soon as you walk away with the key and would shut itself off if you don't come back. (We have a Hyundai, btw)

@cait5413 So far it seems like the car we are interested in will beep if you get away from the (running) vehicle with the key and may have auto shutoff timer capabilities, but I can't find anything about it not letting you turn the car off if you don't have it in park. Hmmm.
I have keyless entry and start and LOVE IT! I never have to fish out my keys, which of course are ALWAYS at the bottom of a huge purse! Also, I am SOOOOOOOOOO bad about locking my keys in the car and this car does not let you. If the car is locked with the fob inside of it, it will automatically unlock and beep the horn at you! Same with the trunk, I can't tell you how many times I have tried to throw my purse in the trunk with the fob in it, and the trunk just pops open like....hello, you are an idiot! These features alone have saved me sooooo much headache!!! I'm in love with keyless, and don't know if I can go back to having a key!
I saw this on the news a few weeks ago, but a perk to keyless ignition is putting your keys/purse in the back seat with your baby to force you to go back there to get your keys to lock your car so you don’t forget your baby. I know it sounds unimaginable to forget a baby, but there are constant stories on the news of this. My car beeps at me if I’ve opened the back seat so you know to check it. Just a little tip I wanted to pass along related to keyless ignition.

Oh I love keyless ignition. And my car beeps if I get out of the car with it running. And I can't imagine losing a key - they stay in my purse so much easier than having to find them everytime I need to open the door. My car also has a valet key that pops out and you give the valet guys rather than giving them your entire set of keys which I really like too. I'm all for it!
I LOVE my keyless ignition! It's pretty much idiot proof. I got annoyed with having to dig out my keys to get in the house, so I bought a keyless deadbolt for my front door

@ktcakes87 We have keyless entry for our door too! The older generation thought it was a terrible idea not to have keys, until they could easily get in our house when we weren't there (pre-approved). It's safer than leaving a key under the mat, and when we go to the park we don't need to bring anything. I love it. Plus I feel fancy-schmancy when I use it.
Whooooa TB changed it so newer month boards are at the top now (which is how it should've been always--BMBs from 2011 aren't really getting traffic these days) and it really threw me off for a second!
ETA: Annnnd then they just had them in random order that makes no sense (2014, 2018, 2017, etc). Maybe admin will just change it back to 2011 at the top. Who knows with them.
@ktcakes87 we moved from a house with keyless entry and 'upgraded' from an SUV with keyless ignition to a house with a key and a van with a key... I feel like I've gone back in time and this whole convo is REALLY making my miss all that lovely technology!!!!
Anyone else have senioritis at work? My due date isn't for two and a half months and I don't plan on taking leave early unless it's medically necessary, but that doesn't mean I have any motivation at all.
@MJDsquared ::raises hand:: I'm so over work. I've basically handed most of my responsibilities over to my assistant managers already to make sure they know what they are doing before I leave so I'm super bored. I'm starting to work from home soon for November and then took vacation first week of December before my RCS so I still technically have like 6 more weeks of work to go but there will be lots of naps involved.
Ugh, yes to the senioritis... I want to just quit everything, my life is crazy hectic right now and all I can think about is how wonderful it will be come Thanksgiving when I can be done for a while.
@MJDsquared +1 to senioritis. I have just about a month to go and zero motivation. There's a bunch of complicating factors at work, too, that make it hard to feel invested.
@MJDsquared I have no idea what senioritis is but I think I have it based on what you guys describe lol I have just under 6 weeks left of work and I am over it. I basically spend most of my days sitting on a chair at a computer ordering others around, which is actually quite the accomplishment as a nurse in emerg haha Also, just decided to count and I officially have 19 1/2 shifts left... I think I may sprinkle a sick call or two in there too because I have a boatload of sick hours banked and don't need them for my mat leave.
Yesssss on being over work at this point. I'm still 69 days out from EDD but just mentally over it. I am managing to drag myself into the office most days but my heart is not in it. It's a weird shift for me because I'm normally kind of a workaholic.

I second everyone on having senioritis at work. My give-a-crap meter is at an all-time low. I cannot wait to be done and on maternity leave. After my 12 weeks are up, I'll decide if I have it in me to go back or not.
@MJDsquared So many +1s here that I caved and put in my 2 weeks notice effective for 11/4. I just cant do it anymore nor do i want to. Let the other office associate clean up her own damn messes.
@MJDsquared +1(,000,000,000) to senioritis! I put in for 2 weeks vacation before my due date so I only have 4 weeks to go, but every hour of every workday feels like a year! I seriously don't know how I'm going to make it without snapping.
I feel the same about work. I have 6.5 weeks of work then 2 weeks vacation and i start my mat leave a week before my edd. Im so tired and uncomfort I can't wait to be done:)
100% agree with everyone here. I've essentially given up on keeping up with the office since I know everything is going to go to sh*t when I leave, at least from an organizational standpoint.
Omg yes yes yes to senioritis at work. I just told a coworker/friend this the their day. I'm supposed to be working ahead and I'm barely keeping up with day to day. It doesn't help that I don't talk about my pregnancy much at work so my boss keeps forgetting I'm pregnant and assigning me new projects that will carry over into the new year. I cannot tell you how many times I have told him "just a reminder I'm due in mid December...."
