Re: GTKY Tuesdays - October 10th Edition

  • @Amphibious22 You have my dream job.  How did you get that job? What did you study?  How do I get that job?

I wanted to be a vet for a long time (yet ended up in the law).  I hate seeing sick animals so I thought I couldn't handle being a vet.  I almost quit my job in BigLaw (pre-kids) to volunteer in Africa at a cat reserve.  My dad and husband told me I was insane.

  • @marcus7676 it's a super competitive field that takes a lot of work to break into. I studied environmental science in school (but any life science degree is fine) and spent years volunteering at different zoos and wildlife rehab institutions. In high school, I worked at a dog kennel and in college I also worked as a vet assistant. Basically as much hands on animal experience as is humanly possible. I also worked in education departments of zoos as a tour guide before I finally landed my first keeper job.

I've had a lot of people tell I'm insane. In fact, my mom sometimes still asks when I'm going to start my "real" career. But I don't care what people say because I work outside at a zoo with animals all day :)

  • @Amphibious22 hmmm - - my english major / politics minor / JD is probably not going to help me much then.  Maybe a second career after DS and Two are older.

  • @marcus7676 haha definitely! and honestly, with the right drive and willingness to work, they can sometimes overlook what type of degree you have as long as you at least have one. The world always needs more people passionate about wildlife conservation!

  • Late to the party, sorry. I was at the doc yesterday for my first appointment and then with dd.

Anyway, I am a professor at a university. It is my dream job. I love my job. It's flexible and I love teaching and doing research.

  • I’m a sahm. I love it but miss having adult interaction everyday and feelin like I use my brain. I use to be a pharmacy tech and I loved learning about the medications, but I hate people so that became an issue :p. I’ve kept up with my certifications since becoming a sahm so maybe one day I’ll go back. If I do it will be in a hospital setting where I don’t have to interact with people lol.
