Hi ladies I was wondering your thoughts on the name Alaric and also how would you pronounce it? Ok I admit I first heard the name on The Vampire Diaries years ago as "Ah-lar-ic." We just found out I'm pregnant with a boy so I brought this name up. My DH really likes it. But then when I started to research it more turns out most people pronounce it "Al-air-ic" based on this German king. Part of me says if I'm worried this much i should just not use it but guess I was curious at to what others thought. Thanks!

Re: Alaric/ideas

  • Also if any one has any similar name ideas that would be great. Our other ideas our Desmond and Rory but I have to say I really liked the name Alaric as we thought it was pronounced.
  • I'm not familiar with it and read it as "Al-er-ic" with emphasis on the Al

I prefer Desmond. I like Rory too but it sounds like a nickname to me.

  • Not knowing the name, i would have pronounced it the second way you described (AL-er-ic). It reminds me of a characters name on the show Silicon Valley. Erlich (ER-lick). Maybe it's because I watch the show, but i find this name less confusing.

I love Desmond! It was in our top 3 when we had our 1st.
  • I love Alaric, I also have heard it on Vampire Diaries so that's the pronunciation that I would use too.

  • I guessed Al-air-ic.  And remember, having your name mispronounced isn't the worst thing.  I have a difficult to pronounce name, and it gets mangled all of the time.  I just inwardly roll my eyes and move along.  Sometimes it can be pretty amusing.

I looked up Alaric, and I like it.  It's a good, strong name.  Some other ideas:

  • If you name your child Alaric, he'll be fighting mispronunciation and misspelling his entire life.

Alastair has a similar flair.  It's the Scottish version of Alexander.
