Chronically sick kid - immune issues due to prevnar vaccine not fully effective?

Has anyone heard of this? My almost 3 year old is ALWAYS sick. He is looking at his 3rd set of ear tubes and has a history of RSV  (1x), pneumonia  (2x) and severe asthma  (to the point of low blood oxygen).

We are at our wits end. We recently switched pediatricians and she thinks he has immune system issues and has referred him to an immunologist. She said sometimes the prevnar vaccine isn't effective and they need to to-do them.

He has so many doctor and specialist appointments it is making my husband's employer irritated because nobody at his office has kids that get much more than an occasional cold :(

  • I don't know if I have any solutions for you, but a few questions to help guide yourself.  Is your child in daycare?  If so, it's not uncommon for kids in daycare to be frequently ill.  If so, would it be possible to get a nanny or put him in an in-home daycare with less allergens/exposures?  Has he been to any specialists?  Allergist? ENT? Pulmonary?  Is the asthma well controlled?  The specialists may be able to better diagnose and treat his asthma/ear issues.
As for Prevnar, it is common to get a dose of a different type of Prevnar when they are a little older (unsure what age they normally give this).  It covers different strains of bacteria than the Prevnar 13 series they get as an infant so it would probably be beneficial for your son to get it.
And you can tell your husband's employer to shove it because your child is most important and you need to get him healthy.  Good luck!  Hope you find some answers soon.
