3 hour glucose test tomorrow

I'm so anxious about my 3 hour test tomorrow. I don't handle needles well, and along with being terrified of nausea/vomiting this is pretty much my worst day ever. The only instructions my doctor gave me were to restrict carbs for about 3 days before. I've been eating mostly protein and vegetables with a little fruit over the past few days.

Any advice on whether I should completely avoid fruit today? Anyone have positive 3 hour test experiences to share? (I've already heard the horror stories, I don't need those!) I'm so overwhelmed with trying to figure this all out and get through tomorrow.

Re: 3 hour glucose test tomorrow

  • Drink a lot of water today to stay hydrated -- it makes the draws easier on you and the phlebo. :)  And good luck tomorrow!  The place I took mine had a spot where I could lie down and rest. I broke up the time by reading the 1st hour, resting the 2nd and playing games & answering emails on my tablet the 3rd.

  • I have no advice since I haven't had mine yet, but I just wanted to say that I understand how you feel!  I have a terrible phobia of nausea and vomiting and the possibility of the test making me sick actually scares me more than failing the test.  Good luck gal!
  • Definelty drink tons of water. They blew 2 of my veins because I was dehydrated. I was bruised for weeks BUT it wasn't bad as far as the drink or getting sick. I had a headache but I passed so that's all I cared about!  Good luck. You will be just fine!

  • Definitely drink tons of water.  I looked like an addict with bruised track marks after mine because it was hard to find my veins.  I also had a situation where they missed a vein and I bled down my arm instead of into the tube.  It was a great way to start the test...

  • Good luck! My doctor didn't give me any diet instructions except to fast 8 hours before the test. I also wasn't able to drink water during the testing. I ate pretty normal the day before and tried to drink a lot of water. Bring a good book or download a fun game to play on your phone -- and definitely think of a nice big meal you would like to enjoy when the testing is all done. Fingers crossed for you!

  • I'm doing mine right now and I feel awful. Glad yours went smoothly... I on the other hand feel like I might puke.
  • I have my 3 hour test on Friday and I was given a diet to start 3 days ahead of time that tells me to load up on the carbs, sugar, etc! This seems CRAZY to me!! Did anyone else have to do something like this? I failed with a 153 (cut off is 135 in my office) and never had any issues with my first pregnancy.

No. My only prep for the 3 hour was nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before. That was 2 years ago but this seems strange.

  • I have mine on October 9.  I failed my first one with a 178 (cutoff was 131) and all they told me was I need to fast for 12 hours before I do it.  So it's scheduled right away at 8:30 in the morning. I believe the only thing I can have is water. They have said nothing about what to eat before. I believe mine just wants you to eat as you normally would...

I had to do a 3 hr a few weeks ago.  I had a diet to follow for 3 days before the test.  I had to eat extra carbs for those 3 days.  I had to eat either 3 donuts a day for 3 days, 3 pieces of that with butter a day for 3 days or 3 bagels a day for 3 days.  I thought it was crazy but my Dr said if you don't normally eat enough carbs and then when you drink the glucose, your body doesn't know how to react and gives you a high reading even if you don't have a glucose problem.  I had to fast for 12 hrs before the test and passed with no problem.

My 1 hr was 135 and my Drs cut off was 130.
    My 3 hr was 125 , 99 and then 92.

  • @KayLee77 3 donuts a day for 3 days sounds like heaven for me... but then I'm sure my test would come back failing... I have my 1 hour test today... They only told me to not eat carbs/fruit until the test. I had eggs and turkey bacon for breakfast, though I'm not sure what I'll do for lunch. Fingers crossed!!!

  • @abcola yep I have my 1hr today. I had eggs for bfast and an early appointment. The drink wasn’t too bad. Tasted like flat sprite- and I had to chug since they were ready for me in the ultrasound room. Now waiting another 1/2hr for the blood draw
  • @balletnerd I hope it all goes well!! I'll be glad when this testing is over and it'll be one less thing to stress about. The whole 'do I or don't I' just kills me. Has anyone had to re-test after passing?

  • @TMK0325 I second what @dkizz82 said. My three hour was on Monday, and all they told me was nothing at all after midnight the night before. I could take small sips of water in the morning to take my daily meds, but that was it.

FX for everyone waiting for results. The waiting game is killing me so I totally sympathize!

  • I just found out yesterday I passed my 3 hour test, so I'm pretty ecstatic about that. If it helps anyone waiting to take the test, this was my experience...

I specifically asked my doctor if there were any diet restrictions, etc. I needed to follow before the test.  He said no except for fasting starting at midnight the night before.

I did take it upon myself to restrict my diet a little in the days leading up to the test.  I didn't think much about the 1 hour and I took it on a Sunday morning after a particularly carb filled weekend (think pizza, burritos, and I even topped things off with a 10pm ramen dinner the night before), so I didn't want to cheat the test but I did want to make the healthy choices I usually aim for in order to avoid getting a false diagnosis due to something stupid I ate.  I ate a lot of whole wheat bread and no white bread in any form whatsoever, eliminated any sweets, and made it a point to get enough protein and drink enough water.

As for drinking water during the test, I was allowed.  It was probably the only thing that kept me from puking up the 100g glucose drink and having to come back.  They did say not to drink too much, so I only had probably 2 full glasses over the 3 hours, but by the last blood draw they actually told me I was dehydrated based on how slow my blood was coming out.

  • @SoxGirl982 I had my 3 hour Monday. Still waiting on results but only restriction I had was to fast 8-10 hours prior to test time. I was allowed to drink walk throughout the test so I sipped on it periodically. I failed my 1 hour with a 188

I have to take the 3 hour tomorrow. Had to take the 1 hour last week and failed - took it early cuz of my weight.  Hoping to pass this one, then test again at I think 30 weeks like normally scheduled. Appreciate the advice provided here. Anyone know about how long it takes to get results?

So glad you passed. I was so dehydrated they blew 2 veins because they couldn’t get one due to dehydration. I was bruised for 2 weeks. It was awful. It’s so weird how doctors have different rules.

  • @clc515 I was told 24-72 hours they will be sent to your doctor.  Than it's anyone's guess when the doctor calls! My bloodwork all goes through labcorp and they have a patient portal. It's available to me 24 hours after they send it to my doctor and I almost always see them there before my doctor calls.

  • @Marley629 Thanks! I'm going through Labcorp and didn't look at the patient portal before, but will check on that this time!
  • @clc515 definitely get your patient portal set up. it's actually a pretty nice system. it aggravates me to see the indication "your results have already been sent to your doctor. they will be available to you here at this super exact time and date" but at least it's not a mystery when they will appear. they also send you a notification when it posts.
for me, it is apparently 48 hours instead of 24 after the doctor receives it, but i STILL usually don't get a call by then and i'm not one to jump through the hoops of calling the office just to be told they'll call me back never.

  • I’m so jealous of all of you and your patient portals. We don’t have that and I haven’t heard back from my one hour. It was a week ago. He said he’d only my call if it was abnormal but I still hold my breath everytime the phone rings.

  • @dkizz82 this is for labcorp specifically. i think quest diagnostics has one too. odds are that your insurer makes you use one of these two corporations for your lab work...?

as for all of my 1000 different patient portals through each doctor, they are generally super worthless.

I did it last night after reading some of these comments, and can already see that the results from my 3 hour test will be available tomorrow morning. :-)

  • Had my 3 hour test this morning.  Hoping for the best, expecting the worst.  My 1 hour was 147 and I don't know what my doctor's cut off is.  From what I saw on Google (because everything you read on the internet is true) I was 7 points above normal.
The thing bothering me the most is not being able to eat all the food at the fair this weekend!  I'm ok with the no sugar, low carb, that's my normal diet anyway, but I do occasionally have my "free days" where I eat whatever I please and that was supposed to be Sat!  Here's hoping I can still enjoy my day at The Big E!
